The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 358: A Sense of Familiarity

"What's so difficult about that?"

Sun Wukong nodded and said, "As long as you promise to stop eating humans from now on, I will take you out of here."

"This..."

The thorns on the ground trembled: "I can't do that."

"Why can't you do that?"

"I have been nourished by the bodies of humans for thousands of years as a sentinel of the graveyard."

The Thorny Demon said, "I don't want to eat humans either, but ever since I became sentient, I have always been eating humans. It's all I know how to do. If I don't eat humans, I will starve to death."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "Then I cannot take you away."

"Great Saint, I can handle this demon alone, but I can't stop it from eating humans."

The voice of the True Martial Great Emperor suddenly sounded in Sun Wukong's ear.

He said, "Great Saint, you are adept at the Incarnation Technique and change into myriad forms. You can help me protect the people of Jingluo Country."

"Okay."

Sun Wukong nodded, raising his right hand.

As soon as he lifted his right hand, the sky suddenly brightened.

The True Martial Great Emperor looked up and saw countless beams of light descending from the sky, piercing through Jingluo Country in the blink of an eye.

"It truly is the power of the Heavenly Emperor."

Thinking to himself, the True Martial Great Emperor suddenly saw flames burst from beneath his feet, burning away the thorns.

He unsheathed his sword and, turning into a streak of light, flew towards the Royal City.

The humans within the Royal City had their vision already obscured by the light descending from the heavens.

When they regained their senses, they found swords of fire planted in the ground, cutting off the thorns at their feet.

"None shall move rashly, wait until I have eliminated this demon!"

The voice of the True Martial Great Emperor flew over from the sky.

The humans of the Royal City knelt on the ground, not daring to budge.

When Sun Wukong flew into the Royal City, the battle between the True Martial Great Emperor and the Thorny Demon had already begun.

The sounds of explosions came incessantly from the Royal Palace, where the battle took place, and the giant Thorny Demon rose from the ground, nearly blotting out the entire sky.

Sun Wukong waved his right hand, and a ring of light covered the sky above the Royal City, preventing the Thorny Demon from unleashing its anger on the humans.

He watched the battle quietly, and after a good while, the Thorny Demon finally fell under the sword of the True Martial Great Emperor.

Flames ignited the body of the Thorny Demon, like a burning sun, baking the Royal City extremely hot.

A streak of light flew out from the body of the Thorny Demon.

Sun Wukong reached out a hand, and the light, unavoidable, was drawn to his hand.

It was a small blood-red thorn.

"Great Saint."

Before long, the True Martial Great Emperor flew over: "That is the demon's essence. Crush it quickly."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "It's not inherently evil; it's just its nature."

He said to the Thorny Demon filled with fear: "Your body is too large; you can't survive without eating humans. It would be better for you to stay by my side, and in time, you will naturally lose the desire to eat humans."

The thorn trembled, and in the end said nothing, winding itself around Sun Wukong's wrist.

Sun Wukong smiled contentedly.

The True Martial Great Emperor sheathed his treasure sword, sighed softly, and said nothing more.

On the ground, the King of Jingluo Country, leading all the civil and military officials, rushed over and knelt down, kowtowing.

"Thank you, the Grandmaster who vanquishes demons, thank you, Great Emperor!"

They chanted the name of the True Martial Great Emperor.

The True Martial Great Emperor shook his head: "This is my duty, no need to thank me. If you wish to thank someone, thank him."

The King looked up at Sun Wukong, not knowing what to say.

After a long while, he mustered his courage.

"Thank you, Heavenly Emperor."

The King led the way, and the civil and military ministers also shouted out one after another.

"Thank you, Heavenly Emperor!"

Following that, the commoners in the streets also knelt down to thank Sun Wukong.

The name of the Heavenly Emperor echoed throughout Jingluo Country for a time.

This scene made Sun Wukong somewhat emotive.

He turned to look at the True Martial Great Emperor, but saw that he did not show much displeasure.

Could it be...

A thought flashed through Sun Wukong's mind.

Before he could speak, the True Martial Great Emperor had already turned and flown away.

Sun Wukong followed, watching as the True Martial Great Emperor left Jingluo Country.

The mountain guarding Jingluo Country shrank amidst the rumbling sounds until, by the time the True Martial Great Emperor had passed, it had transformed into a giant serpent, following behind him.

"Great Emperor."

Sun Wukong caught up with the True Martial Great Emperor and asked, "Now that you've awakened, why not return to Huaguo Mountain?"

The True Martial Great Emperor glanced at him.

"Compared to Huaguo Mountain, the Northern Continent needs me more."

His memory had already been awakened.

The True Martial Great Emperor looked down at the cliffs beneath his feet.

Of all the continents, the Northern Continent was the most dangerous, with the most demons, and the most desolate.

"Great Saint, how many demons do you think there are in the Northern Continent?"

The True Martial Great Emperor asked.

Sun Wukong was silent for a moment: "Countless."

The peril of the Northern Continent was beyond the imagination of ordinary people.

This land was teeming with demons, and it was from such an environment that the True Martial Great Emperor could be called the Grandmaster who purged evil from the Nine Heavens.

"In this lifetime, Lingshan has not been moved."

The True Martial Great Emperor said: "It is my responsibility to safeguard the Northern Continent when there is no one to guard it."

Sun Wukong stopped flying and looked at the silhouette of the True Martial Great Emperor: "What must be done for the Great Emperor to return?"

"If the Great Saint wishes to enlist my service, then resolve the demon issue here."

The True Martial Great Emperor turned, his smile slight: "If you can change the Northern Continent, I will naturally submit to you once again."

"I understand."

Sun Wukong nodded, turned, and flew towards Huaguo Mountain.

In the sunset, that golden light swiftly receded.

"Great Emperor."

The giant serpent coiled its body in mid-air: "Could the Great Saint become a good Heavenly Emperor?"

The True Martial Great Emperor shook his head: "If he cannot achieve it."

He looked towards the endless lands in the distance and said: "Then probably no one in this world can."

The Jade Emperor did not change the Northern Continent; Sun Wukong was the only one who could.

"In this lifetime…"

The True Martial Great Emperor looked forward expectantly: "What will this place become?"

At the very least, it should no longer be that so-called Pure Land.

Huaguo Mountain, Sun Wukong descended from the sky.

"Brother, how are the conditions in the Northern Continent?"

Ao Luan was the first to come up to greet him.

"I'll tell you all about it later."

Sun Wukong said: "Right now I have something I need to confirm."

"What matter?"

Ao Luan was somewhat puzzled.

But Sun Wukong did not answer; instead, he said: "Call over the most outstanding learners of the Wanling Heavenly Dao from the past two years, I have questions for them."

"Yes."

Although Ao Luan did not understand, he still summoned some youngsters.

These youngsters had been learning Wanling Heavenly Dao for two years, and some of them had already mastered the power to cast spells.

Upon seeing them, Sun Wukong had an idea.

"During your study of Heavenly Dao, did anything unusual occur?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"Unusual?"

The youths thought about it and then shook their heads one after another.

"What about a sense of familiarity?"

Sun Wukong asked again.

"There is that."

The youths immediately responded: "Occasionally when we encounter some difficulties, it always feels like we've done it before, and we quickly learn how to overcome them"

Moreover, the more knowledge they learned, the easier it was for them to understand, as if they had already learned it before.

"It's really so!"

Upon hearing this, Sun Wukong couldn't help but feel secretly thrilled.

After he asked the youths to leave, Ao Luan looked at him with surprise and delight.

"Brother, could it be that..."

"Mhm."

Sun Wukong nodded: "Learning Wanling Heavenly Dao, perhaps it could awaken their memories."
