The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 40: Shouma Country

"South?"

Sun Wukong asked the Immortal of the Moon: "Do you know anyone in the south?"

"There is."

The Immortal of the Moon nodded and then shook his head: "That place is the Southern Wilderness, vast and boundless, I'm afraid it will be very difficult to find Kua Fu."

Sun Wukong frowned, but still asked the Immortal of the Moon to try his best to search.

He then turned to the two River Gods.

"Where did you get your Fire Gourd?"

Sun Wukong asked.

The magical treasures of the River Gods do not manage the rain and dew, yet they can spout fire, which is really strange.

"A woman gave them to us."

The two River Gods answered.

"Woman?"

Sun Wukong was startled, and asked what kind of woman she was.

However, the two River Gods also did not know the identity of the woman.

After the riverbed dried up, the woman handed them the Fire Gourd to teach Immortal Zhenyuan a lesson.

"That woman was kind-hearted, fearing we wouldn't win, she specially gave us these two gourds."

The River Gods said.

To Sun Wukong, it all sounded like a scheme.

The Immortal of the Moon, who was listening on the side, remembered something, stepped forward, and asked: "Did that woman have any peculiarities?"

"There was nothing peculiar."

The two River Gods answered, and then thought for a moment: "That's right, she seemed to have no shadow."

"That must undoubtedly be a person of Shouma Country."

The Immortal of the Moon declared.

Sun Wukong couldn't help but ask: "Are there really people without shadows in this world?"

"With all due respect, Immortal."

The Immortal of the Moon bowed and said: "People of Shouma Country, whose movements cast no shadows under the sun and moon and leave no trace on ice and frost, all possess half-immortal bodies!"

Sun Wukong was somewhat surprised, yet indeed, being able to move without casting shadows under the sun and moon and walking on ice and frost without leaving traces is not something ordinary people could achieve.

"If people have half-immortal bodies, then their country must be a Half-immortal Country."

Sun Wukong nodded and said: "Kua Fu's whereabouts may be related to that woman."

"I have heard that the Shouma Country has a deep connection with the sun."

The Immortal of the Moon continued: "Perhaps Kua Fu's stealing of the sun displeased Shouma Country."

Hearing this, Sun Wukong knew what had to be done next.

He glanced over at Immortal Zhenyuan.

The Immortal nodded: "I will go there with my virtuous brother."

Sun Wukong nodded, and together with the Immortal of the Moon and Immortal Zhenyuan, they arrived deep in the Southern Wilderness on a Somersault Cloud.

Here the mountains rose and fell, surrounded by dense forests and swirling fog.

Sun Wukong stood on the cloud bank, his Eyes of Golden Flame sweeping over the mountains, yet he saw no sign of any country.

"Where is Shouma Country?"

He asked.

"I do not know."

The Immortal of the Moon shook his head; today was his first visit here.

The three descended to the ground, deciding to ask the Mountain God.

However, after searching several mountains, they could not find even one Mountain God.

"Are there no Mountain Gods here?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

"There are."

Sun Wukong said, he could feel the presence in the mountains, all these mountains had Mountain Gods.

"The Mountain Gods here might have been taken away by Shouma Country."

The Immortal of the Moon speculated.

Sun Wukong also guessed this but couldn't be sure.

The three searched the Southern Wilderness for a long time, covering an area of a hundred miles and asking some flower demons, but still didn't get any clues.

"They're really well hidden."

Immortal Zhenyuan said: "If I still had my Immortal Law, I would definitely uncover these mountains and leave them nowhere to hide."

These words reminded Sun Wukong.

If his Eyes of Golden Flame couldn't find Shouma Country, it must be blocked by something.

He flew up to the clouds again and used his Eyes of Golden Flame to scan the mountains.

This time, Sun Wukong focused on hidden places—soon, he noticed something strange about a lake.

"Here."

He brought Moon Immortal and Immortal Zhenyuan to the lakeside.

"This lake is filled with strong Spiritual Energy."

Seeing the lake, Immortal Zhenyuan experienced a familiar feeling: "I'm afraid it's no less than the Mother-Child River."

Because it felt similar to the Mother-Child River, Immortal Zhenyuan maintained a distance from the lake.

Moon Immortal examined the lake: "This is just an ordinary lake, how could it hide an entire nation's people?"

"This is the entrance."

Sun Wukong replied.

He pointed his hand, and a whirlpool erupted in the center of the lake.

As the whirlpool appeared, the Spiritual Energy spread across the lake converged towards the center, the whirlpool swallowing them and transforming into a Light Gate.

Moon Immortal and Immortal Zhenyuan were extremely astonished.

"Junior brother, how did you discover this gate?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

Even knowing the abnormality of the lake's Spiritual Energy, he couldn't have thought of using it to create a gate.

The reason Sun Wukong did so was because he was already familiar with opening gates.

"Let's go in!"

He led the two immortals and stepped into the Light Gate.

The whirlpool-turned-Light Gate was like a mirror; they fell from this side of the lake and flew out from the other side.

Passing through the Light Gate, the scenery they saw was identical to the other side.

"Did we really pass through the gate?"

Immortal Zhenyuan curiously examined the surroundings: "Or were we bounced back by the gate?"

"We were not bounced back."

Sun Wukong answered.

He had a strong feeling of passing through a barrier.

"Since Shouma Country is a Half-immortal Country, the place it occupies is naturally different from the outside world."

Sun Wukong carried the two immortals and flew into the sky, looking forward he smiled: "We've found them."

Immortal Zhenyuan looked towards the other side of the mountains in amazement.

There, a majestic city stood, its scale comparable to Chang'an City in the Three Realms.

"Let's go over."

Sun Wukong was about to lead them there when suddenly several flashes of light appeared, blocking their way.

"Outsiders, what are you here for?"

These were several unfriendly-looking people from Shouma Country.

Sun Wukong looked at them; their skin appeared semi-transparent, otherwise they looked no different from humans.

"We are looking for Kua Fu."

Sun Wukong said: "Please notify him."

"Kua Fu?"

Hearing this word, the face of the leader from Shouma Country turned even grimmer.

"We don't have such a person here, please leave!"

"Do you think we are blind!"

Immortal Zhenyuan scoffed: "That Kua Fu who stole the sun clearly came here, and you hide him while claiming he's not?"

"Baseless accusations."

The leader from Shouma Country grew irritable, saying: "Without evidence, how can you make such reckless allegations?"

Immortal Zhenyuan stretched out his hand, pointing at some large markings on the ground.

"With those things there, do we still need other evidence?"

The people from Shouma Country looked at the ground, and piece by piece, the marks stretched towards their city.

"What are those?"

The leader felt somewhat familiar and couldn't help asking the other people from Shouma Country.

After a long thought, a few of them realized.

"Sir, those marks resemble the bottoms of our feet."

"Those must be footprints!"

"Footprints?"

Upon hearing this, the leader couldn't help but inhale sharply.

"Such things from legends actually exist!"

He slapped his head, realizing he had made a big mistake.

The people from Shouma Country didn't leave footprints when walking, so they hadn't noticed, unlike other people whose walking would leave footprints.
