The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 41: Born from Chaos

Shouma people, having been caught with evidence, could only agree to pass the message for Sun Wukong and his party.

Soon after, they obtained permission, and the group walked into the city.

This city is Shouma Country, centered around a magnificent palace, surrounded by densely packed houses, with tea houses, taverns, and pawnshops on the streets, bustling with people.

"They have shadows."

Passersby on the street stopped to look over at Sun Wukong and his companions.

"They are outsiders."

The curious Shouma people sized them up, causing Immortal Zhenyuan to slightly frown.

"The people here are quite isolated."

He said: "But the city is not bad."

"Uh-huh."

Sun Wukong nodded.

He too thought the city was good, very much in the style of the Shouma people.

Shouma people walked without sound, so copper bells were hung on the doors of shops on either side of the road, tinkling "ding ding dong dong" when someone passed by.

But the city itself should just be a regular city.

Sun Wukong thought to himself, and then touched his chest.

His chest was slightly warm.

Since passing through the Light Gate above the lake surface, the egg had been reacting.

Sun Wukong found it strange and asked the leading Shouma person, "When was this city built?"

"Sixty thousand years ago."

A Shouma person replied.

"After the world was divided in two, we built it at the bottom of the lake."

Another Shouma person said.

Long ago, the Shouma people and others had lived at the center of the world, the hundred tribes flourishing together, electing a Heavenly Emperor.

But then the sun disappeared, and the Shouma people migrated to the Southern Wilderness, constructing this city modeled after the once Immortal City.

"Modeled after the Immortal City?"

Sun Wukong became curious: "Did you originally live in an Immortal City?"

"Yes, originally the Heavenly Emperor married Nu Qian of Zhou Mountain. Nu Qian bore Ji Ge, and Ji Ge sired Shouma."

The Shouma person replied: "That is the progenitor of our clan."

Sun Wukong was startled, then turned to look at the Immortal of the moon.

The Moon Immortal nodded: "This is why the Shouma people are Demi Immortals."

"I see."

Sun Wukong understood.

The egg in his chest was probably reacting to something special in the city.

"Please rest here."

The Shouma people took them to a posthouse and said: "His Majesty will summon you in two days."

"In two days?"

Immortal Zhenyuan's face darkened: "What an honor!"

Unwilling to wait so long, he turned to Sun Wukong and said: "Young brother, let's just break in."

"No need."

Sun Wukong shook his head.

He cast several beams of Immortal Light into the sky.

The Immortal Light burst forth in the sky, causing the Spiritual Energy above the city to collapse.

A supreme aura rippled out, felt by all the Shouma people.

"That will do."

Sun Wukong said.

Before long, a troop of cavalry hurried from the palace.

"Who cast that spell just now?"

They asked.

"It was me."

Sun Wukong replied.

The cavalry immediately dismounted, bowed, and said: "Please, Immortal, come to the Imperial Palace."

Sun Wukong glanced at Immortal Zhenyuan, who felt somewhat envious.

"If I still had my immortal power, I could do the same," he thought.

The group arrived at the Imperial Palace, passing through several gates, subjected to thorough checks, and ascended the nine layers of stone steps to reach the splendid Treasure Hall of the Imperial Palace.

Inside the great hall stood civil and military officials, with a solemn middle-aged man sitting on the throne.

"Your Majesty, I have brought the Immortal."

The cavalry saluted the man.

"Be dismissed."

The man waved his hand to let him leave, his gaze fixed on Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was also staring at him.

This man had a familiar aura, as if he was calling to him.

Neither made a move, and a Military Officer, seeing this, took the initiative to step forward.

"How dare you, barbarian. Why don't you kneel upon seeing the Heavenly Emperor?"

"The Heavenly Emperor?"

Immortal Zhenyuan looked at the man: "Is this also considered the Heavenly Emperor?"

"Humph..."

The man's face darkened.

"Immortal, do not speak."

Sun Wukong spoke out as a reminder.

Immortal Zhenyuan shook his head, but he ceased speaking nonetheless.

Sun Wukong stared at the man, discerning the fluctuations of that aura.

Despite some differences, it indeed was...

"Come out."

With a thought from Sun Wukong, a light suddenly burst forth from the man.

"Return!"

The man's face changed, and he immediately called it back.

However, in that instant, Immortal Zhenyuan saw clearly, it was a Jade Seal.

"So that's how it is..."

Immortal Zhenyuan realized in his heart.

His sworn brother was indeed a calamity – challenging the existing order in every world.

The man's face grew even more somber.

"I am the Emperor of Shouma Country, holder of the Ancient Heavenly Emperor Jade Seal."

He stood up, questioning Sun Wukong, "Immortal, whence have you come, and why does the Jade Seal react to you?"

The entire Treasure Hall suddenly fell silent, as if one could hear a pin drop.

"Was that just now the Jade Seal?"

"The Jade Seal responded to this person?"

"How is that possible!"

The civil and military officials realized what that light was and all turned their astonished gazes towards Sun Wukong.

That Jade Seal would only react to a Heavenly Emperor ruling the world; it hadn't shone for tens of thousands of years.

How could an outsider possibly elicit a reaction from it?

At this moment, Immortal Zhenyuan stood out.

"My sworn brother is named Sun, with the given name Wukong."

He answered for Sun Wukong: "Both he and I come from Chaos."

"From Chaos?"

"You are beings from beyond this realm!"

The civil and military officials were in an uproar.

"Quiet, all of you!"

The man raised his hand, silencing the commotion.

He looked at Sun Wukong and asked, "Immortal, is your purpose here the same as those Demon Beasts?"

"Of course not."

Sun Wukong countered, "Are you the lord of this world?"

"..."

The man fell silent for a moment, then spoke, "After the division of heaven and earth, there has been no Heavenly Emperor in this world."

He possessed the Jade Seal but was merely a custodian.

Sun Wukong understood: "I see, then we share a common enemy."

The man was momentarily stunned, then nodded: "If so, that is for the best."

"Let's speak in the back hall."

After the man spoke, he announced the end of the court meeting and led Sun Wukong away from the Treasure Hall alone.

Everyone except Immortal Zhenyuan was clueless and could not grasp what had transpired.

"What is going on!"

The civil and military officials discussed amongst themselves in the Treasure Hall for a long time without leaving.

The Immortal of the Moon and Immortal Zhenyuan stayed behind as well.

"Immortal."

The Immortal of the Moon could not contain himself and asked, "Why didn't the Immortal ask about that Kua Fu matter?"

He listened to Sun Wukong's conversation with the Emperor of Shouma Country, and the crux seemed not to lie on Kua Fu.

"That matter is not urgent for now."

Immortal Zhenyuan responded with equanimity: "Let them finish their talk; they will naturally discuss it."

"Oh..."

The Immortal of the Moon nodded and fell silent for a while but couldn't help tugging at Immortal Zhenyuan's sleeve.

"Immortal, what exactly is the Immortal's identity in worlds beyond?"

Immortal Zhenyuan gave him a glance.

This Immortal of the Moon was indeed perceptive.

Thinking to himself, Zhenyuan said, "My sworn brother is the Heavenly Emperor of two realms."

The Immortal of the Moon was momentarily stupefied.
