Death… And Me

Chapter 4494: Special!

Chapter 4494: Special!

Things played out much as Thery and Rean had predicted. It only took a few days for everyone to begin feeling the effects of their adaptation. The change was still small, almost imperceptible at first, but there was no doubt that something was happening inside their bodies. The Godly Pressure that had initially felt completely overwhelming was slowly becoming less foreign to them.

Interestingly, the adaptation started showing itself first among those who had been suffering the most. From the looks of it, the Zone Gods, who were constantly being sent back into the vault to recover before going outside again, were actually adapting slightly faster than Arcis and Thery.

There wasn’t much need to think about why that was the case. Their cultivations were lower, which meant their bodies naturally had less resistance to the Godly Pressure. Arcis and Thery, on the other hand, had much higher cultivations and therefore possessed stronger bodies and greater natural resistance, making it slightly more difficult for the Godly Pressure to force changes into them.

The difference wasn’t particularly large, though. If the Zone Gods were adapting at a speed that could be considered one hundred percent, Arcis and Thery were somewhere around ninety-five to ninety-six percent. In the long run, such a difference could certainly become significant, especially over decades of training, but at their current stage, it wasn’t enough to matter.

As for the twins’ group, their situation was somewhat different. Thanks to the Echo within their bodies, they already possessed a higher resistance to Godly Pressure than ordinary cultivators. Fortunately, they were only Aura Gods, meaning their lower cultivation partially compensated for that greater resistance. As a result, their adaptation speed was surprisingly close to that of the Zone Gods. They weren’t the fastest, but they weren’t being left behind either.

During the first few weeks, the enemies continued visiting the area from time to time, apparently still searching for Coyui and the three experts who had disappeared. Every time, however, they found nothing and eventually left. After several weeks of repeating the same process, they finally stopped coming, which most likely meant they had given up on finding Coyui in this area.

That didn’t mean no one ever came near the Ashen Hills again. This region wasn’t a restricted area, after all, and there were plenty of reasons for ordinary cultivators to pass through it.

Coyui explained that the Ashen Hills could occasionally produce useful materials, some of which were valuable enough to attract cultivators from Dlaval City. Because of that, it wasn’t particularly strange to see other experts wandering around the area or heading toward the volcano known as the Hell’s Door. Fortunately, none of those cultivators had anything to do with Coyui, so there was no reason for them to investigate the area or look for him.

Three months passed before the first members of their group finally reached the point where they could move inside that ridiculously high concentration of Godly Pressure.

Arcis was the first among them to make a meaningful attempt. He slowly placed one leg in front of the other, each step feeling as though he were carrying an entire mountain on his body.

Interestingly, the ground beneath his feet showed absolutely no signs of being affected. The Godly Pressure wasn’t related to weight, after all. No matter how concentrated it became, Arcis’s physical weight hadn’t increased by even a single gram.

The difficulty of walking was nevertheless enormous. The Arctic Arcurio eventually reached the front of the airplane and stared at the platform leading inside. Under normal circumstances, walking up such a simple platform wouldn’t have been worth noticing for someone of his cultivation. This time, however, he stared at it as if it were an enormous mountain covered in swords while he was being forced to climb it barefoot.

*Ugh... ugh... argh...*

Sweat poured from every icy feather on Arcis’s body, something he probably hadn’t experienced in many, many years. His body was slowly learning to endure the Godly Pressure, but every movement still required an enormous amount of effort.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he managed to step onto the platform and enter the airplane. The platform immediately retracted, and the invisible airplane continued floating several meters above the ground.

*Bang!*

The moment he was inside, Arcis collapsed onto the floor, breathing heavily. His chest rose and fell rapidly as he struggled to recover from the effort.

"This shit... is hard as fuck! *Gasp, gasp.* Even an Anchor God could probably take my head right now."

Kentucky, who was nearby, didn’t look much better. He glanced toward Arcis before speaking. "And this is the moment when we’re adapting the fastest. The further we progress, the slower the adaptation will become."

His words made everyone understand the seriousness of their situation. They had already spent three months just reaching the point where they could barely walk. If their adaptation slowed down as expected, becoming truly comfortable in this environment could take an absurd amount of time.

Thery, however, didn’t show the slightest intention of giving up. His expression was firm as he looked toward the others. "Even if it takes a hundred years, I’m absolutely not leaving. I have to find the truth about why my race is locked into this part of the Celestial Plane. We’ve come this far already, and turning back now would make everything we’ve suffered meaningless."

"And we will also benefit greatly from this adaptation once we go back," Roan added. "Even if we don’t reach complete immunity, any resistance we develop here should remain useful once we return to an environment with lower Godly Pressure."

"Senior Thery," Kachia looked toward the Thousand-Script Race expert. "How long do you think it will take before we can move without being hindered by the Godly Pressure?"

Thery had made a prediction before, and he had turned out to be correct so far. Because of that, everyone naturally turned their attention toward him.

Thery closed his eyes for a moment, apparently calculating the situation in his mind. After a brief pause, he raised one hand and carefully controlled some Godly Energy around it. The amount was pitiful compared to what he could normally control. At this point, Thery could probably be considered no stronger than an Anchor God.

"At this rate, it truly might take several decades before we’re able to move freely enough to at least defend ourselves."

"Several decades, huh?" Arcis pondered for a moment before shrugging slightly. "For cultivators like us, that isn’t really that much time. We’ve spent much longer periods cultivating before. The real problem is that my Besgol Region will probably assume something terrible happened to me if I remain gone for that long."

"We should still stay," Flugel commented. "Our Soul Flames were left behind, and we already warned everyone that we didn’t know where the teleport array could take us. Everyone back there is well aware that we might not even come back anymore. For now, we shouldn’t waste this opportunity. If this adaptation really allows us to overcome the effects of Godly Pressure, it is worth spending several decades here."

Everyone around nodded in agreement.

"That’s right."

Arcis looked at them for a moment before finally agreeing. "Very well. We’ll stay."

"Wait!"

Coyui, however, didn’t look nearly as pleased with that decision. He had been listening quietly until now, but he immediately spoke up when he realized what their decision meant for him.

"Are you saying I have to wait decades here with you? Can’t you just send me out first?"

Arcis had almost forgotten about Coyui. He looked at the old man for a moment before realizing that, from Coyui’s perspective, waiting several decades was a completely different matter.

"Right, there is you..." Arcis scratched his chin before offering a compromise. "I’ll tell you what. Wait until we complete one year of training here. By then, we should be able to move somewhat, even if we’re still pretty weak. At the very least, our Zone Gods shouldn’t be suffering injuries from the Godly Pressure anymore. After that, we’ll activate the Teleport Array and send you away on your own. How does that sound? One year shouldn’t be much to cultivators like us."

Coyui calmed down after hearing the proposal. He thought about it for a little longer, considering how safe their current situation seemed to be now that the enemies had stopped searching the area.

"Well, we seem to be pretty safe now..." He thought a little more before finally nodding. "Alright! One year! Regardless of what your progress is, you will send me out after one year."

"It’s a deal!" Arcis and Thery accepted at almost the same time.

Kentucky, however, couldn’t help but offer one final warning. "There’s just one thing, Friend Coyui. As we’ve mentioned to you many times, the other side of the teleportation point is the territory of the Godly Creatures. You have a very high chance of dying if you go there alone."

Coyui didn’t seem bothered by that possibility. "I’ll take my chances."

"Sigh..." Kentucky didn’t insist. "If you say so."

"Then, before that," Rean asked with a smile, "how about you tell us a few more things about this place?"

Coyui glanced at him. "Sure. What else do you want to hear?"

"Two things, actually. But the first one is probably the most important, or at least one of them." Rean’s expression became more serious as he continued. "Friend Coyui, you said that the Law God Realm is the highest realm anyone can achieve in the City Prison of Woster. If that’s the case, how many Law Gods are actually out there?"

"Oh? Just that?" Coyui seemed slightly surprised by the question. He stopped to think for a moment before continuing. "I’m not sure of an exact number. After all, some experts simply don’t go around announcing that they’ve made a breakthrough. Still, based on what I’ve heard and the people I’ve encountered, I believe there should be at least three to four thousand of them, give or take."

Everyone froze.

Three to four thousand Law Gods!

Each region in the grasslands would consider itself incredibly fortunate if it had more than three Law Gods under its banner. A powerful region might have more, but even then, the number wasn’t something that could be casually ignored.

And yet, according to Coyui, there were at least three thousand Law Gods in this prison alone.

All of them were gathered in a single place.

The sheer number was so ridiculous that even the twins’ group couldn’t immediately process it. They had known that Woster was unusual, but this was beyond anything they had expected. A place where cultivators couldn’t advance beyond the Law God Realm shouldn’t have been capable of producing thousands of Law Gods.

At the same time, another possibility became impossible to ignore.

Cultivation inside the Prison obviously had something special!
