Chapter 3757: Firefang
Zi Mengyao and Alex walked through the desert landscape, making their way toward the South End Marker. They could see it across the land, standing far away on top of a hill. The land rose and dipped at several locations, perfect for hiding cultivators from plain sight.
There were also giant rocks all across the place, making it harder to tell who was hidden where.
"How big was this group the last time you went to meet with Su Nian?" Alex asked.
"A few hundred people, I believe," Zi Mengyao said. "I had my own group, so I wanted to merge, but he wanted my people to do some things first before they could use the Marker."
"As in?"
"We all had to swear an oath that we would challenge 1000 different people outside of the community who came for the Marker before we got a chance to make use of the Marker. Once we did that and got the stars, we would once again start the same process."
"1000 challenges?" Alex asked, somewhat surprised. "That’s a lot."
"That was back then," Zi Mengyao said. "Now it’s even more, I assume."
The woman’s eyes snapped to attention the moment someone walked out in front of them. Before they could challenge them, she spoke up.
"If you challenge me, I’ll make the price a thousand stars. Go ahead at your own risk," the woman said.
The man who had come out from behind the slope froze upon hearing that and hesitated.
Alex couldn’t help but smile. Another thing that Zi Mengyao had discovered, alongside the ability to challenge multiple people at once, was that the person being challenged could also decide how many stars they would be challenging each other for. A single star was the default choice, but people could choose to make it more.
Making that change, however, took from them the ability to choose the challenge. If both sides accepted the change in bet, they would be given a random challenge.
"What happens if they don’t accept your change in bet?" Alex asked her once they continued.
"Based on what we’ve noticed, the challenger can pay the one star to consider their challenge a loss. Or they can accept the challenge and add onto the bet once the challenge is revealed. That is the most dangerous part of it all."
"I see," Alex said. "So it is very risky."
Zi Mengyao nodded.
Her words had spread far more than to just the single man. More people moved aside as they realized who it was that was making their way into the group.
"So you can make it to the center easily, huh?" Alex asked Zi Mengyao as they got close to the Marker.
"Kind of," she said. "There aren’t many who would challenge me if I tried. But Su Nian definitely would, and I don’t think I can win against him in anything if I tried. He could regularly challenge me, and I would be making nothing at all."
Alex nodded slowly.
A woman in red robes stood far near the Marker and walked down the slope. Once at the bottom, she stopped and looked at Zi Mengyao with the faintest hint of a grin.
"Sister Zi Mengyao. May I ask why you have graced us with your presence?"
Alex sensed the new person’s cultivation base and realized that she was in the Immortal Spirit 5th realm. Zi Mengyao’s Immortal Spirit 7th realm cultivation base made her stronger than the woman, so it was clear this new woman had no intention of challenging her.
"Where is Brother Su Nian?" Zi Mengyao asked. "I have someone who wishes to discuss some matters with him."
The new woman’s eyes narrowed as she quickly glanced toward Alex before looking back. "Brother Su Nian is cultivating. If there is anything to discuss, I am available. I make most of the decisions around the place anyway."
Zi Mengyao stood there silently for a moment before moving aside. She turned toward Alex.
"I don’t think she’s joking, so you might as well discuss it with her," she said. "She will go ask Brother Su Nian regarding decisions she can’t make all by herself."
Alex nodded and turned to the woman in the red robes.
"I am Dawnblade. May I ask who you are?"
The woman showed no change in expression. "I’m Firefang. What is it you wish to say?"
"I have some people who wish to make use of that Marker, but your people are making it difficult for them to come here. I was hoping to come to some sort of agreement with Brother Su Nian to allow just the four of us to come here. In exchange, we could give something in return, maybe? I’m a pretty decent alchemist, so I could make a few pills for people who have the ingredients ready."
The woman let out a scoff upon hearing Alex’s words. "Is that all you’ve come here for? Then you’ve wasted your time. You will have 10 minutes to return. If you haven’t gone outside of our community by then, I will have them all challenge you."
Alex shrugged. "That’s totally fine, but could you consider my words for a little longer?" he asked. "If you don’t want to, then I can head over to where this Su Nian is. Is he up there?"
Firefang’s face distorted with slight anger. "Don’t test my patience. Leave while you can."
She turned toward Zi Mengyao. "Sister Zi. Take this man while I still care enough to keep my word. If you don’t, I’ll have my community surround you at once."
Zi Mengyao turned toward Alex and saw the calmest look on his face. She understood that even if Alex was challenged, given his identity as an incredible alchemist, he would have a hard time losing.
So, she wasn’t scared.
Zi Mengyao crossed her arms and stared at Firefang. "If you want to challenge him, go right ahead. But since you warned me, I shall warn you too. If you challenge him, you will lose."
