Chapter 2770: False Witness
Date: Unspecified
Time: Unspecified
Location: Zhongguo (China), Liaodong Province, Shuntian Prefecture, Shenyang City, Imperial Palace
When the vapor and dust finally settled, the imperial palace was gone. In its place remained only a vast scorched ground. The only ones still standing there were the devil and the imperial guard captains.
However, neither side looked to be in good shape. Most of the captains were barely standing, some already on the verge of death from the blast. The devil looked even worse. Its cactus-like body was torn and charred in several places as it hurriedly gulped down potion after potion, trying to stabilize itself before its injuries caught up to it.
Thanks to her Void Silk, Corey not only avoided any harm from her own attack but also witnessed the explosion from within it. Though the void muffled most of the details, she still caught enough to understand how the devil and the imperial guard captains had managed to survive the Mortal Star.
One of the imperial guard captains possessed a mud-related ability. At the last moment, he burrowed deep into the earth’s crust along with the other captains, trying to escape the blast. Unfortunately, they hadn’t dug deep enough. The heat and shockwaves still reached them, leaving most of them badly injured, some even half dead.
The devil, on the other hand, had faced the attack head-on at first. But the moment he felt the terrifying intensity of the Mortal Star, he began burning through every defensive item he had on him. One after another, barriers shattered around him until the blast finally passed. He barely survived it.
Now he was chugging potion after potion. By the time the last bottle emptied, the wounds on his cactus-like body had already begun to close, restoring him close to his peak condition.
Anyone else, after witnessing what Corey could do especially with Void Silk protecting her, would have chosen to retreat. Especially the devil, her last attack had nearly sent him to his grave. But the devil didn’t. Instead, he grinned as if he had just won, chanting, "False Witness!"
Seeing that she had failed to kill the devil with a single attack as planned, Corey frowned and braced herself for whatever was about to happen next.
[ — False Witness —
> Corey, Princess of Scots, you have been found guilty of attempting to murder devil Peyote Pals.
> Hereby you are sentenced to the following penalties.
i) All your attacks will cause one-third of their total damage to Devil Peyote Pals. ii) All attacks by Peyote Pals will deal you threefold the total damage.
Note:
i) Justice might be delayed, but will always be upheld regardless of who you are, or where you are, or what you have. An eye for an eye, blood for blood.]
"What the hell?" Corey blurted as an unfamiliar voice echoed in her head. It was clear this had something to do with the devil’s ability. It appeared to be the reason he had been shamelessly trying to bait her into attacking first.
Judging from the effect, it certainly seemed worth it. Still, Corey couldn’t quite understand how these debuffs alone would help him defeat her. After all, she still had Void Silk. As long as she could shift into the void, most attacks shouldn’t be able to touch her at all. Where as if she were to drop another one of her Mortal Star and he would evaporate into nothing.
"Let me wipe that smirk off your face," the devil said, firing a volley of thorns at Corey.
Corey immediately shifted into the void to evade them. But to her dismay, the thorns followed her into the void as if the boundary between spaces meant nothing. Left with no choice, she used Dice to turn the pursuing thorns into fine dust.
Corey stood in the void in stunned silence, trying to understand how the devil’s attack could possibly follow her into the void. The void was supposed to isolate her from the real world space.
Before she could fully process it, another wave of thorns tore into the void and shot straight toward her. Corey’s eyes widened in disbelief. The previous thorns had merely followed her into the void. But these... these had somehow tracked her location inside the void itself. How was that even possible?
Then Corey remembered the final words of the voice that had spoken in her head. Justice may be delayed, but it will always be upheld, regardless of who you are, where you are, or what you have.
Connecting those words with what had just happened, Corey quickly reached a conclusion. No matter her abilities, her location, or the items she possessed, the devil’s attacks would always reach her. Justice, as that voice called it, would be enforced regardless.
After dicing the second wave of thorns into fine dust, Corey slipped back into real space. The moment she reappeared, she found the devil staring at her with a smug smirk.
"How dare you, a furless monkey from a backwater realm, reject my generosity not once but twice?" the devil sneered. "And on top of that, you had the gall to say I’m not worthy to accompany you."
Its cactus-like body bristled as it leaned forward and its voice dripped with cold fury, adding, "Let me teach you the consequence of running that arrogant little mouth of yours."
Before the devil could launch his next attack, Corey moved first and she cast mortal star three times in rapid succession before slipping back into the void using the void silk.
If the devil’s strange ability reduced all damage she dealt to him to one third, then she would simply triple the attack. Three Mortal Stars meant the total damage would still land as one full Mortal Star.
Earlier, the devil had barely survived a single Mortal Star thanks to his defensive items and a mountain of potions. But now he had already burned through most of them just to stay alive. Corey wanted to see how he would survive her mortal stars now.
