"Thank you for understanding," Susan said, shifting in my arms so she could look me in the eyes.
"No need to thank me. We did almost everything but that—" I teased, pulling her closer, her bare chest pressed against mine.
"That’s the important part," she cut in gently, pecking my lips. "I want to save it for after we’re married. And you’re a great fiancé for respecting that."
I smirked, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Will I still be a great fiancé if I stop by Anna’s or Jill’s after I leave here?"
Susan went quiet for a beat, her fingers running through my hair as she studied me.
"I see," she murmured with a voice that could straighten a dog’s tail. "Already planning your rounds, are we? How... diligent of you."
She leaned in, her lips hovering just shy of mine, letting the moment stretch without quite granting it.
"Do go, if you must. But don’t come back comparing. I would hate to have to remind you where your standards ought to lie. Now run along, before I reconsider being quite so understanding."
She got out of bed, and as she rose, her slime armor cleaned and dressed her in one motion, by the time her feet touched the floor she was in full official attire
"You’re really throwing me out over that? Don’t be like that, come back, let us fool around a bit more."
"Go find Anna or Jill, you might be able to do more than fool around. I’m sure they’re far more... accommodating."
"You sure? They will devour me if I let them."
Susan took a slow breath and patiently asked, "Is that not what you want?"
"You look sexier when you’re angry, you know that?"
"Good, now you have something to get you started when you are with them."
...
"Holy shit, what are you still doing here?"
"Don’t you dare act dumb, Wyatt. I know your little minion kept you updated."
Corey snapped, anger flaring as I stepped out of the warehouse, withdrawing my domain. She hadn’t left with the others.
"What the fuck were you doing in there so long?"
"I heard you used your bolas supernova right in the middle of our headquarters."
"Call it even?"
"...Okay."
After we shook on it, I nodded toward her. "Go check on Anna and Jill. As our enforcer, you need to make sure everyone invited is actually attending the assembly."
"I’m still your enforcer?"
"Aren’t I your best friend?"
"Hell yeah." She grinned. "Bros before hoes, buddy."
"Now, go do your job."
"Leave it to me, boss. I’ll make sure they will never miss a single assembly in their lives ever again."
I watched as Corey flew off, practically buzzing with enthusiasm. She had her flaws, high-maintenance to a fault, but she was a walking treasure trove all the same. A couple of her past lives were duds, but some were a windfall. I guess she was my bad habit.
Meanwhile, Dredre, who had gone to check on Bloodette, returned the moment she sensed me withdrawing my domain. She rushed straight into my hair, sniffing frantically, then slowly exhaled in relief, clinging close like someone finally getting their fix.
Ignoring the cute little junkie, I turned toward the warehouse, sensing Susan’s presence just beyond the door. I let out a quiet chuckle, shaking my head.
Then I looked at the Clown Mask. "Hive Spirit reported that you refused to take the Eye of Prosperity?"
"Yes, my lord, I did." Clown Mask nodded, then began to explain, "I still remember the overwhelming power of the Tao Eye. I don’t think I’m ready for it—let alone able to control it. I believe it would be best for me to first explore the abilities of the Eye of Fortune and achieve a certain level of mastery over it before taking the Eye of Prosperity to retain my Tao Eyes."
"Mm," I nodded in understanding, agreeing with her. "Fine, do as you see fit. The Eye of Prosperity isn’t going anywhere."
"Thank you, my lord."
"Your mistress is waiting at the door. Get back to your post."
I laughed as I watched Susan dart away from the door like a spooked bunny. My soul pupils caught every little move she made.
*Boom*
A loud explosion snapped me out of my thoughts. I whipped my head toward the sound and saw Corey—she had crashed out of the fifth tower’s penthouse office donned in her white scale armor.
A moment later, another figure followed her out—it was Anna. She caught up to Corey and mercilessly kicked her in the gut, over and over again, like she was playing soccer, only her ball was Corey.
She made sure Corey stayed in the air, causing no further collateral damage beyond what had already been done.
"Wyatt!" Corey called out in desperation, pushing herself to her maximum speed to escape Anna.
"Wyatt—"
Anna caught up to her anyway and kicked her straight into the sky.
"Wyatt! Save me, this bitch is crazy!"
This time, Corey gave up on escaping and focused entirely on calling for help. Only then did she manage to get a full sentence out—and she chose her words poorly. All she managed to achieve was provoke Anna further.
"I beg your pardon? You will not speak of your godmother in that manner. I think it’s time you were reminded of your place."
"Stay away from me, you crazy bitch!" Corey had completely given up on escaping, seeing that Anna was somehow managing to overtake Lil’ Baem’s explosive speed.
"Corey, just use your Void Silk!" I shouted, not wanting to interfere more than this.
"She stole it, said it would look better on her!"
"Young lady, don’t you dare lie. You said it was a gift."
"Damn it, Wyatt, save me! It fucking hurts!"
"Just apologize. I’m sure she’ll forgive you."
"But I did nothing wrong!"
