Chapter 2654: Chapter 2654: A Spiritual Battery
No one dared to answer Chen Song’s pointed question. Every single person in that room who had successfully secured a job within the company had only done so by going through Chen Song’s illicit back-door connections. Many of them possessed absolutely no professional qualifications at all to support them in obtaining those prestigious positions. They were merely ghosts hidden within the system.
"Just wait for the result. Well... I already know exactly what my own result will be. There is no hope left for me." Chen Song sighed, looking and sounding utterly hopeless.
Everyone remained suffocatingly silent. No one dared to even breathe too loudly at this tense moment. Xue Jinghua sank back onto the sofa as if her legs had suddenly turned to lead. Her face was deathly pale, and her hands were trembling uncontrollably in her lap. Beside her, Chen Guoliang remained silent, his expression dark, shadowed, and completely unreadable.
Then, one of the relatives finally found their voice and spoke up.
"It must be Meili’s fault, right? It all comes back to her." He stated, pointing an accusing finger.
"Yeah... This is entirely her fault. If it were not for her big mouth calling Chairwoman Tang a kept woman, none of this disaster would have ever happened." Another relative said, nodding in fervent agreement as they desperately searched for a convenient scapegoat.
Chen Meili did not dare to lift her head, her long hair shielding her face from their piercing glares.
"Meili did not mean for any of this to happen. She is still just a child." Xue Jinghua said, her voice weak, yet still instinctively wanting to protect her daughter even now.
"Humph! A child? Because you keep spoiling her like that, she has become the total disaster she is now." The relative replied sharply, cutting her off without mercy.
The relatives began to turn like a pack of hungry wolves, blaming Chen Meili for everything that had happened to them. Chen Song could not hold back his boiling frustration any longer.
"That’s enough! I don’t care if you want to shout until you are hoarse, but stop blaming her like that in my house. I am utterly exhausted, and I want to get some much-needed rest. You all can return to your own homes. Staying here and pointing fingers will not solve our current problem." Chen Song said, gesturing toward the door with a finality that brooked no further argument.
....
After the intense confrontation with Master Chunwei, Yu Qi wanted to leave the place immediately. However, she came across a woman who was crying hysterically. When the woman saw Yu Qi, she desperately grabbed Yu Qi’s hand.
"Where is this place? Why am I here?" The woman asked through her sobs.
"Calm down and stop crying. You don’t remember why you were here?" Yu Qi asked carefully.
The woman listened to Yu Qi’s words and stopped crying.
"Yes. I... I simply don’t remember." The woman said as she tried fruitlessly to remember.
"Do you remember who you are?" Yu Qi asked, her voice calm but carrying an underlying weight that seemed to demand the truth.
Yu Qi had been acutely aware of another presence lurking within the house long before she had even stepped across the threshold. It was a faint, flickering energy, distinct from the malice she had encountered later. However, that specific presence had remained strangely dormant, failing to manifest even when she was locked in a life-or-death confrontation with Master Chunwei and that grotesque creature. Now, looking at the woman, she wondered if this was the source of that lingering aura.
"Yes... I am Chang Shuchun. I... I am a charm seller." The woman stated, her voice trembling as she clung to the one fact that gave her a sense of identity.
"Then, tell me, what is the very last thing that you remember before finding yourself here?" Yu Qi probed, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched for any sign of deception or memory gaps.
"I... I... I think I was just doing my ordinary job." Chang Shuchun replied, a deep, pained frown etching itself onto her forehead as she strained to recall the sequence of events.
The memories felt like sand slipping through her fingers, grainy and impossible to hold onto.
"You say you are a charm seller?" Yu Qi verified, her interest piqued. "You mean you sell talismans and spiritual protections?"
"Yes. I make them all by myself. I’ve always had a knack for it." Chang Shuchun nodded, a flicker of pride momentarily lighting up her weary eyes.
Yu Qi stared at Chang Shuchun for a few silent, heavy moments. Using her inner vision, she could see that this woman possessed a rare, innate power shimmering within her soul. It was a pure, stabilising energy. A dark realisation began to dawn on Yu Qi. It was highly probable that this woman had been used as a living vessel, a spiritual battery of sorts, to block malevolent backlashes for Master Chunwei while he practised his dark arts.
"So, can you tell me why I am here? Why am I in this place?" Chang Shuchun asked, her cheeks flushing with a touch of embarrassment as she realised a girl as strikingly beautiful as Yu Qi was staring at her with such intense, unblinking scrutiny.
"I don’t know the full story yet. I was summoned here by a mysterious message. However, once I arrived and saw the state of things, I realised it was nothing more than a dangerous, elaborate prank." Yu Qi said smoothly, choosing to keep the supernatural battle to herself for the time being.
"I see." Chang Shuchun nodded, though she looked far from convinced.
However, she did not think much about the matter.
