Chapter 2659: Chapter 2659: Was Not Meant For The Living
However, the moment they crossed the threshold, they were first caught off guard by the bizarrely well-maintained condition of the bed and the closet.
"Judging from the state of this room, I think she probably stayed here much longer than we initially thought." A police officer commented, running a finger along the clean bedframe. "Someone was taking very specific care of this space."
"Yeah. And look what I found." The female police officer said as she showed the ID cards she had discovered.
"So, this one belongs to Miss Chang, and the other belongs to her kidnapper?" A police officer asked, reading the name Ma Chunwei.
"We cannot conclude that right away. This needs further investigation and a full background check." The female police officer replied. Then she looked at the officer who had summoned her earlier. "Did you guys find anything else?"
"We did find something." The police officer nodded, his expression turning uncharacteristically solemn.
"What is it?" The female police officer raised an eyebrow, sensing his hesitation.
"You should really see this for yourself." The police officer stated.
So, they left the clean sanctuary of the bedroom and moved to another room deeper in the house. As she entered, the female police officer’s breath hitched. She immediately saw the intricate, swirling patterns that had been drawn meticulously across the floorboards.
"What on earth is this thing?" The female police officer frowned, her flashlight beam dancing over the strange symbols.
"I don’t know much about the specifics, but I have seen this kind of imagery before." One police officer said, his voice uncharacteristically low.
"What is it?" Everyone turned to look at the officer who had just spoken up.
"Well, it might sound superstitious to some of you, but this drawing has been used in rituals." The police officer stated.
He came from a family that had deep roots in traditional, superstitious practices, so he was instinctively familiar with this kind of thing.
"You mean... like ghosts?" The female police officer asked, feeling a sudden, icy shiver of goosebumps rise all over her body despite the stagnant air of the house.
"Probably, though I don’t know the exact intent behind this one." The police officer stated, stepping back from the marks on the floor. "But whatever happened in this room was not meant for the living."
"Well, let’s secure this area immediately and ensure that no one is allowed to approach." The female police officer stated, her eyes scanning the perimeter.
"This place is far too remote, Officer. No one with any sense would ever wander into a location like this. If we secure the area with tape and guards, it will only serve to advertise that something of great importance is hidden here." One of the male police officers argued, gesturing toward the dense surroundings.
The other officers looked at each other in silence, carefully considering his words and the logic behind them.
"Regardless, we will follow protocol. It is better to be safe than sorry." The female police officer said firmly, making the final decision and cutting off any further debate.
After completing the necessary procedures and securing the perimeter, the officers returned to their patrol cars. Once settled, the female police officer reached into an evidence bag and showed Chang Shuchun the items they had recovered from inside the dilapidated house.
"Ah! That... that is my ID card!" Chang Shuchun exclaimed, her voice trembling as she recognised the small piece of plastic.
"Yes. We found it tossed aside in the room. Based on the evidence, I assume that you were being held in that room for quite some time. However, we also discovered another ID card nearby." The female police officer stated, watching Chang Shuchun’s face closely.
"Another one? Can you show me?" Chang Shuchun asked, her breath hitching in her throat.
The female officer held up the second ID card for her to see. The moment Chang Shuchun saw the face on the card, she immediately brought both hands to her mouth, her eyes widening in terror.
"Ah! That... That man..." Chang Shuchun was visibly shaken, her entire body beginning to shiver.
"Miss Chang, do you recognise him?" The female police officer asked, her voice becoming more urgent and alarmed by the woman’s visceral reaction.
"Yes... He... he is the one. This man came looking for me once before, asking me to help him with some work at his house. I refused him... Later that night, I was simply walking home, and the next thing I remember was waking up in that dark room. Yes... that is definitely him, though he looks slightly younger in this photograph." Chang Shuchun explained, her eyes still fixed on the man’s cold stare in the ID photo.
"I see... That identification helps us immensely with the progress of your case." The female police officer said with a focused nod.
"When can I get my own ID card back?" Chang Shuchun asked tentatively.
"We cannot return the original to you for the time being, as it is now considered vital evidence. However, we will issue a special temporary document for this matter. You may use that official document as your primary identification for the time being." The female police officer stated.
"I see... I understand." Chang Shuchun nodded, though she looked disappointed.
"We are heading back to the police station now to finish the report." The female police officer announced.
With that, the engines started, and they returned to the station.
"Miss Chang, do you have anyone, a relative or a friend, who can come and get you?" The female officer asked gently once they arrived at the precinct.
"I... I think I remember a phone number, but it has been so long... I do not know whether it is still active or not." Chang Shuchun said, her voice filled with hesitation.
