Chapter 1210: Prison (4)
Just as Lith was contemplating, he heard the whistling sound again.
This time, the sound was guiding him to the shadow of the gigantic tree in the sky.
Lith began walking.
Along the way, he made sure to keep an eye on the cultivators nearby.
Soon, the whistles grew faint and eventually stopped.
Lith stopped too.
He looked around and found himself between a group of cultivators wearing elegant robes and facing the shadow of the tree.
Here, he found something odd. Something he hadn’t seen among other cultivators.
One of the cultivator’s, a young lady with greenish-black hair, had her clothes scrunched at places.
Lith walked up to her and squatted down, bringing his face closely towards her and staring intently.
He continued to do so for a while.
Soon, he noticed the lady’s eyebrows quiver.
"How long do you plan to keep pretending?" Lith said calmly.
"W-who?" The young lady was startled. She did not make any extra movements and continued to be in a meditative position.
"So you indeed are conscious."
"Who are you?" The lady asked.
In the place she was in, it worried her greatly to know there was someone else who was conscious and moving.
Her life was literally in the other person’s hands as she couldn’t move.
"Let’s forget who I am and let’s focus on you." Lith replied. "Let’s start with your name. Is your name Meng Yuexin?"
"!!!!" The lady was startled and opened her eyes, trembling.
Though the moment she saw Lith’s handsome face, those silver hair, and deep purple eyes, she became slightly calm and returned to her previous meditative state.
If she doesn’t hold the meditation pose, she would transcend and lose her consciousness.
"Silver hair..." The young lady softly muttered. "Are you from the Evure God Clan? No... this can’t be. You don’t have their red eyes."
In the Evure God Clan, everyone had the same hair and eye color. So if someone did not possess that, then they most certainly did not belong to them. It was information known to almost everyone.
"Correct. I am not from the Evure God Clan, but my name is Lith Evure." Lith shared a fun fact with her.
"!!?!?!" The lady trembled again. "E-Evure?"
Beads of sweat dropped down her forehead. She was in great panic and could barely hold herself still.
Lith patted her shoulder and said, "The worry you’re having is pointless. I’m not the Evure God Clan’s monster you expect me to be."
Meng Yuexin’s response was justified. Anyone would panic when they come across the one that jailed them. Add to that, most feared the Evure God Clan deeply.
"I’ve met your brother Meng Haoran. He told me about you. It’s good that I’ve found you so soon."
Meng Yuexin’s heart began beating fast. It was to the point where it might leap out.
"My b-brother? He’s alive?"
"Yes. He’s in the layer before this, fighting for his survival every single moment." Lith did not hide it.
A drop of tear leaked down the young lady’s face. "If only I could call him to this layer, he wouldn’t need to fight so much. But this layer is even more dangerous than that..."
Lith didn’t comment on it.
He couldn’t feel the threat of the layers like normal people because of his bloodline.
This prison was for the prisoners, and not for the members of the Evure God Clan. If those members ever decided to traverse through, they would surely have an edge over others.
Like for Lith, the control effects weren’t as strong, and there was also a whistle guiding him forward.
He didn’t know the origins of the whistling sound, but he had a hunch that it wasn’t leading him to danger. It was most probably leading him to his destination like a broken GPS system.
Of course, it was just a speculation. Lith had no way of confirming it. He may as well be walking into a trap for all one knows.
"I promised your brother that I’ll take you out of this prison. He showed me the way and—"
"No! This can’t happen!" Meng Yuexin immediately refused while crying out loud. "I know very well what it means to get out of here."
"What?" Lith tilted his head in confusion.
"Only two people can get out of here. If he’s asking you to rescue me, then this means he’s about to give his life up." Meng Yuexin gritted her teeth and answered. "Tell me, did you come across the Laughing Pyre yet?"
"Laughing Pyre?" Lith didn’t come across such a name.
"A man burning inside a bonfire who keeps singing happily." Meng Yuexin clarified.
"Ah..." How could Lith forget such an oddity?
"So you did..." Meng Yuexin’s teeth were gnashed, making an awful cluttering sound. "And as per my brother’s plan, you plan to sacrifice him to the Laughing Pyre for the key, right?"
"Huh?" Now this was something new for Lith. Even he hadn’t thought this far in the future and the swordsman Meng Haoran did not tell him his plans. He just gave a little information and dipped.
Tears leaked down Meng Yuexin’s face as she sobbed and continued, "I know, I’ve known all along that it’s impossible for both of us to leave this place. The Laughing Pyre holds two important keys to this prison and they’re important to get out. But, he wouldn’t give them up so easily. Not without a conscious soul in exchange."
Lith rubbed his chin in understanding. This girl knew a lot more than her brother. Or perhaps, it could be that her brother did not wish to divulge information.
He made no comment on the Laughing Pyre or the sacrifice they need to make. He simply left it all for Lith to discover.
Was that guy testing Lith or did he do things in such a way so that Lith would choose to sacrifice him so his sister could be saved?
From the looks of it, the soul contract and everything else pointed to the latter.
’What a crazy guy. Giving up his own life for his sister.’ Lith found such a gesture commendable.
He had a sister as well, and he too wouldn’t hesitate to give up his own life if it meant hers would be saved. He was willing to pay such a price for his close ones.
Lith rubbed Meng Yuexin’s hair and said, "Little girl, you worry too much. Did I say anything about sacrificing your brother or sacrificing you?"
Meng Yuexin was taken aback by the gesture. Her sobbing stopped as a look of confusion spread on her face.
No one. No one in her whole life other than her brother had treated her like that. Treated her as if she was a little girl in distress.
She was a goddamn Legendary Rank. Just a step away from ascending for Heaven’s sake!
’If I could, I would’ve beaten him up. But, but..."
Meng Yuexin did not even dare to think about it, but the gesture felt warm. Such a thought was dangerous and she made it pass away immediately.
"That Laughing Pyre wants you actually, not your brother." Lith elaborated a little on the topic.
"!?!?!" Meng Yuexin was startled once again. Her blood ran cold knowing that person was looking specifically for her.
"Oh no... am I the only conscious person in this layer..."
If no one else was there other than her, then the Laughing Pyre would definitely know of her existence and constantly seek her out.
It was her worst nightmare coming true!
"Most probably." Lith emphasized.
Hearing that, Meng Yuexin did not sob again. Instead, she turned oddly calm and began breathing heavily.
Silence ensued for a good few minutes. Lith couldn’t tell what she was thinking but he gave her time to collect herself.
"You want to sacrifice me to the Laughing Pyre for the keys, right? Then do it. But, in return, I want you to promise me my brother’s safety. I wish for you to take him out of this prison. He deserves better." Meng Yuexin said in a low tone.
It took her a moment but she had come to terms with her own death.
Since she was the only conscious person in this layer, the Laughing Pyre would do everything in its power to devour her.
The rest of the people meditating here had their souls devoured by him. They were nothing but empty husks.
One could even say that the entire layer was Laughing Pyre’s domain. That monster was singing and laughing the whole time, but it was only because it was under extreme suppressions of the prison.
It was such a powerful entity that even with such suppressions, it dominated a whole layer.
That’s what Meng Yuexin thought of him.
Lith wasn’t aware of such information, and he did not take the Laughing Pyre as seriously or thought of him as a threat.
This was bound to happen, given how the Laughing Pyre could not control him even if it wanted due to his bloodline. Thus, it asked for the remaining conscious soul in return for the benefits.
Lith, hearing Meng Yuexin’s conviction, thought about things a little, and sat cross-legged in front of her.
He held her hands and said, "Alright. I’ll sacrifice you to save your brother then. Let’s go."
