Chapter 1880: Chapter 1877: Master Heshan Knows Medicine
The sight of the soldiers, imposing in their demeanor, made the body tremble instinctively. Hastily raising his hands in a salute, he asked, "Patron, may I ask what brings you to Dewen Temple?"
"Routine inspection." Chu Heng explained simply.
He then walked straight in.
The young monk instinctively wanted to stop him but was quickly held by the guards following him.
Chu Heng didn’t give the people inside any time to react. After searching two rooms, he saw the door of the Buddha Hall opposite opening, and two monks walked out from inside.
"Patron, Amitabha."
The old monk saluted Chu Heng and stepped forward to inquire about his purpose.
Chu Heng’s gaze directly fell on the familiar face beside him. He looked twice and spoke, "Why is Master Heshan here?"
"This humble monk has previously discussed Buddhist teachings with Brother Fengchen. After the incident at Buddhist Light Temple, I came here." With a face depicting Buddhist compassion, Heshan smiled at Chu Heng with a gaze that contained not an ounce of insecurity, even a hint of excitement flashed in his eyes.
He did not expect to encounter Chu Heng here. The latter had been recently troubling people related to the Southern Border, even Buddhist Light Temple was sealed due to the underground tunnel constructed.
Though outwardly, it was said that the host needed to meditate in seclusion and would reopen in three years to preach to the Royal Family.
But anyone with a network could understand that there’s more complexity behind this matter.
And as someone involved, he was even clearer that the sealing of Buddhist Light Temple was indeed related to Chu Heng.
He was initially worried about not finding an opportunity to meet him alone, yet here the person appeared before him.
If he didn’t do something, it would be a shame given the recent losses in manpower.
"I see, but Master Heshan should remember to promptly report his whereabouts to the yamen." Chu Heng suggested with an implication, showing no intention to be courteous with him.
Anyone could sense that the relationship between the two was not amicable.
Heshan acted as if he didn’t notice Chu Heng’s indifferent attitude. After saying Amitabha with his palms together, he still maintained a warm stance toward him: "Lord Chu has spoken, this humble monk will surely cooperate."
"Abbot Fengchen, if convenient, I won’t stand on ceremony." Chu Heng first spoke as a reminder.
Monk Fengchen knew he couldn’t stop them, so he nodded: "Lord Chu, please feel free."
Chu Heng waved his hand, and soldiers immediately went to various rooms for inspection.
He didn’t leave immediately but instead tilted his head to invite the two, "Abbot Fengchen, Master Heshan, care to accompany me for a stroll?"
"If Lord Chu doesn’t mind, this humble monk is naturally willing to accompany him." Heshan quickly spoke up, his eyes reflecting a smile filled with profound meaning.
Upon hearing this, Abbot Fengchen’s heart skipped a beat. For some reason, he felt that Heshan seemed a bit off at this moment. At the very least, his initiative was overly assertive.
With outsiders around, Fengchen dared not show it too obviously and merely lowered his gaze, with a hint of worry flickering in his eyes.
"Please, Masters."
"Please, Lord Chu."
Heshan very cooperatively led the way, staying within one step of Chu Heng.
"This is the Buddha Hall where this humble monk and Brother Fengchen chant sutras together daily. If not for the temple’s disrepair, even the Buddha statue would not be neglected. Lord Chu, please don’t mind."
Chu Heng silently observed the surroundings, taking everything in with a sharp eye.
Meanwhile, he listened to Heshan’s introductions.
From the Buddha Hall to the adjacent wings, and then to the remaining monk accommodations.
Chu Heng found no suspicious evidence.
He didn’t feel disappointed, after all, it seemed... as if it had been pre-arranged earlier.
