Peasant Woman's Decreed Life as a Wife

Chapter 1974 - 1971: The Vacant Position

Chapter 1974: Chapter 1971: The Vacant Position

"What’s going on in the palace? Is it over?" Ye Muyu asked anxiously.

Chu Heng saw her curious and tense eyes and knew that if he didn’t explain clearly, she definitely wouldn’t be able to sleep.

He didn’t hide anything and recounted all the events that had happened in the palace.

He didn’t leave out the fact that the King of Huainan and Xiang Anwan had taken their own lives.

Ye Muyu listened, momentarily silent, her expression not looking like she was happy.

Chu Heng reached out to lift her chin, trying to make her smile.

"What’s wrong? It’s over now, there won’t be any more chaos. I’ll be able to solve all the small troubles in a few days, and by then, the capital will be just like before."

Ye Muyu hesitated to speak: "No, I’m not worried about the chaos."

"Since the King of Huainan took his own life, it must be because he didn’t want to betray the country. Perhaps they just wanted revenge." Her emotions were complicated; she felt regret that the two took their own lives and yet disapproved of their impulsive rebellion, and she sympathized with the plight of the entire Xiang family.

The King of Huainan, after all, had been stationed at the border for many years. In Ye Muyu’s eyes, he was a dutiful General, a hero of sorts, yet he chose such a path, resulting in his tragic end.

"They were prepared for failure from the start." Chu Heng rubbed her head, pulled Ye Muyu into his arms, and let her lean on him.

Ye Muyu didn’t hold back, wrapping her arms around his waist, curling up in his embrace, her head resting on his chest.

"However, this all began as a mistake when they encountered Zhang Zhonghai at the Xiang family."

"Ah Heng, good people fear being bullied. I will take good care of you." Ye Muyu sincerely exclaimed, patting his shoulder.

"Alright." Chu Heng let out a pleasant laugh from his throat.

Even though he didn’t actually need Ah Yu’s protection, hearing her say this still made him very happy.

Ye Muyu sighed a few more times and also reflected, realising that she needed to do something. Right now, making some silver was true, but not too much or too little. While living a stable life, this silver could be icing on the cake, but if something really happened, it wouldn’t be of much use.

That’s because their foundation was in the capital; in other words, her and Chu Heng’s foundation was in Great Chu.

If one day the Emperor suddenly became dissatisfied with their family and decided to make a move against them, or if other officials engaged in power struggles and framed them, the Chu family could be eradicated in an instant, just like the King of Huainan.

Despite having so much military power, they still weren’t able to send away the younger members of the family in advance.

This is because they were entirely constrained by the imperial court.

With the Emperor’s wrath, the entire imperial court, even the people of the whole of Great Chu, could become enemies.

So, what should she do to provide a retreat for her whole family?

Ye Muyu pondered.

Adding to her anxiety from the afternoon, she hadn’t even taken a nap, her whole body was tense. Now that her mind was finally at ease, she still hadn’t figured it out, and soon fell asleep while lying down.

Chu Heng settled her down, kissed her cheek, and then lay beside her.

In the following days, Chu Heng continued in the capital, working with the Minister of Dali Temple to reorganize the capital.

And indeed, during the morning court session.

The Imperial Censor immediately denounced the King of Huainan’s treachery, claiming all their families should be executed.

However, this matter was not the most important issue for the officials.

What they cared most about was the vacant position of Minister of Punishments!

This was a position of Chief of Staff!

This position did not often offer opportunities for promotion, as most of the time, officials who attained the position could stay for over a decade, as long as they didn’t make any major mistakes.
