Chang Jing, having successfully extorted seven boxes of playing marbles in one go, finally felt like he could hold his head high.
There were no playing marbles on the island.
There had been, in the beginning, but when Chang Jing was three years old, he accidentally swallowed one and nearly died. After that incident, Chang Kun and Chang Jing's seven older sisters never allowed him to touch such a dangerous toy again.
Even after Chang Jing grew up, the psychological shadow that event had cast on them never truly went away.
Chang Kun, livid with rage, said, “That bunch of scoundrels from the Sword Lodge! I’ve never liked them! And now they dare bully my son? Just wait until the ice and snow melt and I’ll teach them a lesson they won’t forget!”
Chang Jing said to his father, “I’m hungry.”
In an instant, Chang Kun reined in his fury, his face breaking into a broad smile. “Alright, alright, let’s go home and eat!” As he spoke, he gestured courteously to Marquis Xuanping and Ye Qing. “Honored guests, this way please.”
The people who saved his son were benefactors of their Hidden Night Sect, and he would make sure to treat them well.
The group followed the old Sect Leader back to the Hidden Night Sect’s compound.
Not everyone on the island was a disciple of the sect; there were also former fishermen and spouses brought in from the outside.
Chang Kun was not only the Sect Leader, he was also the Island Lord.
As his only son, Chang Jing was naturally expected to inherit his legacy in the future.
But Chang Jing had absolutely no interest in becoming the Island Lord.
He looked at his seven sisters gathered around him. He had been gone for three whole years, how had not a single one of them been made the heir in his absence?
Marquis Xuanping and Ye Qing were lodged in Chang Jing’s courtyard.
The servants went off to tidy the rooms while the kitchen began preparing dinner. Chang Kun chatted with Marquis Xuanping in the reception hall, and Ye Qing asked if he could wander around.
Chang Kun told him to feel free, to treat the place like home and not stand on ceremony.
Meanwhile, Chang Jing had been dragged off by his seven sisters for a sparring session.
Hearing the noise from the courtyard, Ye Qing, curious, walked over to watch.
He had long heard that Chang Jing was highly skilled in martial arts, but he had never actually witnessed it with his own eyes.
“Little brother, seventh sister will spar with you using blades!”
Chang Jing sighed. “Alright then.”
The siblings began sparring in the wide-open courtyard.
Chang Jing’s moves carried the same fierce and domineering energy as Marquis Xuanping’s techniques, and compared to three years ago, his strikes had become much more powerful.
A flash of surprise passed through his seventh sister’s eyes, and after ten moves, her treasured blade was flicked out of her hand by his sword.
“Sixth sister will challenge you next!”
Sixth sister’s weapon of choice was the longsword. She exchanged about fifteen moves with Chang Jing before also being defeated.
The other sisters each took their turn sparring with Chang Jing. The duels between siblings weren’t deadly serious, dropping one’s weapon signaled defeat.
Chang Jing won seven matches in a row. His eldest sister gave his shoulder a satisfied pat. “Not bad. Seems you haven’t neglected your training these past three years. Now that you’ve worked up a sweat, go back and change clothes.”
“Okay.” Chang Jing sheathed his sword and obediently went inside.
As soon as he left, the sisters all let out long sighs of relief.
The seventh sister said, “I let him have two moves just now.”
The sixth sister added, “I let him have three.”
The fifth sister chimed in, “I only used thirty percent of my strength, but then again, he was only using fifty.”
The fourth sister said, “He’s made progress. Before he left the island, even when I held back, he couldn’t take a single strike. Today, he managed to withstand five.”
......
Listening to Chang Jing’s seven sisters talk, Ye Qing began to question reality.
Chang Jing was already incredibly strong, yet all of you are even stronger than him?
What kind of freakish people live on this island?!
Ye Qing hadn’t gone out wandering aimlessly; he had a mission.
While Marquis Xuanping was responsible for building rapport with the old Sect Leader, Ye Qing was in charge of finding the purple herb.
Though the purple herb was just a wild herb that grew on their back mountain, if they outright said they had come here for it, wouldn’t that be exposing themselves?
But... where exactly was the back mountain?
Just as Ye Qing was debating whether or not to ask someone for directions, several of Chang Jing’s sisters came over.
The eldest sister, Chang Ying, cupped her hands toward him in greeting. “Hero Ye.”
The others also followed suit, greeting him with cupped hands.
Children of the martial world didn’t perform the reserved, delicate courtesies of noble ladies but instead greeted others the same way men did.
Ye Qing returned the salute. “Eldest Miss.”
As the eldest daughter, Chang Ying had brought in a husband to join the family, so the servants still referred to her as the Eldest Miss.
Some of her younger sisters had done the same, while others had married out, but as long as they remained in the sect, they were still addressed as Miss.
Ye Qing, adapting to local customs, naturally didn’t nitpick over whether their manner of address was proper or not.
Chang Ying said, “Hero Ye, are you feeling bored staying indoors? Would you like to have a friendly spar with us?”
Ye Qing gave a dry laugh, thinking to himself, I’d better not. Sparring with you all, I’m afraid your blades might not know mercy.
He politely replied, “I wouldn’t dare embarrass myself before the young ladies. I’m just taking a casual stroll.”
“Come sit in the pavilion, then.” Chang Ying said. “Second sister, go steep a pot of flower tea. Her tea-making skills are second to none.”
Ye Qing followed the Chang sisters to the pavilion. The Imperial Advisor’s Hall had very few female disciples, and those who were allowed close to him were rarer still. Honestly, this was the first time he had ever interacted with so many women at once.
Thankfully, the young ladies were all dashing and forthright, unrestrained by conventions, allowing him to momentarily forget any differences in status.
There were only four stone stools around the table, so the fourth to seventh sisters remained standing.
The second sister, Chang Ling, quickly brewed the flower tea and sat beside the eldest sister, then poured a cup for Ye Qing.
Ye Qing picked up the cup and took a small sip.
Chang Ying said, “Hero Ye, my seventh sister is still unmarried. I wonder, what do you think of her?”
Cough! Ye Qing choked on the tea!
W-What?! So direct?!
Wasn’t this topic a bit too abrupt?
Seventh Miss Chang Yu said, “Eldest sister, I don’t like his type.”
Chang Ying shot back, “Then what type do you like? Someone like Hero Xiao?”
“Hero Xiao already has a wife and children.” Ye Qing quickly cut in.
Chang Yu pouted, “Well then I’m not interested anymore!”
Ye Qing never expected that a casual walk in the breeze would turn into a full-blown matchmaking session. He was so embarrassed, he felt like he could scrape a hole in the ground with his toes big enough to hide an entire Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
Chang Ying glared at her youngest sister. “You’re far too picky, that’s why you’re already twenty-five and still not married!”
Chang Yu huffed. “I don’t want to get married anyway!”
Ye Qing gave another dry laugh and kept sipping tea, yeah, let’s just drink the tea.
Thankfully, Chang Ying didn’t press further on that subject. She turned to Ye Qing and asked, “Hero Ye, how’s the tea? Do you like it?”
Ye Qing paused and said, “The taste… is quite unique. I’ve never had this kind of flower tea before. May I ask what flower it’s made from?”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
