Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The food on the island was mostly seafood, so to accommodate Marquis Xuanping’s tastes, Chang Kun had specially invited a chef from outside the island to prepare a few small side dishes.
Marquis Xuanping wasn’t a picky eater. In times of war, he had eaten horse carcasses and gnawed on grass roots. As long as the food was hot, he was satisfied.
Chang Kun chuckled and said, “By the way, Hero Xiao, we’re holding a martial arts tournament here on the island in a few days. Would you like to stay and watch?”
Marquis Xuanping smiled and said, “I’d actually love to stay, but there’s an urgent matter waiting for me at home. I need to return as soon as possible.”
Chang Jing’s eldest brother-in-law exclaimed in shock, “What? You want to leave the island in this kind of weather? It’s nearly the eleventh month! There could already be blizzards on the ice fields!”
Chang Kun said with heartfelt concern, “Yes, Hero Xiao, you’ve never been to our island before, so you might not know how harsh the weather on the ice fields can get. Even I wouldn’t dare to cross them at this time of year.”
Chang Jing kept his head down, silently shoveling food into his mouth.
They can try to dissuade him, but will it work?
His son needs the antidote.
If he had to die, he would die on the road delivering that medicine.
With a single jab of his chopsticks, Chang Jing pierced a piece of fish, his motion was so forceful that he split the dish clean in two.
Chang Kun laughed and said, “See? Little Jing is upset, he wants you to stay.”
Marquis Xuanping glanced at Chang Jing and sighed. “I appreciate everyone’s good intentions, I truly do. If I ever get the chance, I’ll definitely return to visit the island again.”
With things said to this point, Chang Kun and the sons-in-law couldn’t push the matter any further.
“When do you plan to depart?” Chang Kun asked. “I’ll have someone prepare supplies for the journey.”
If it had been any other season, Chang Kun would have arranged for someone to escort Marquis Xuanping across the ice fields. But the ice fields in the heart of winter were too treacherous; he couldn’t put his clansmen in that kind of danger.
In truth, taking the risk served no purpose, he would only end up dying on the ice fields.
Chang Kun was filled with regret.
Marquis Xuanping said, “Tomorrow morning.”
……
After dinner, Marquis Xuanping returned to his room.
It had taken them two days to travel from Quyang to the border of Great Yan, and then another seven days crossing the ice fields. They hadn’t had a proper rest throughout the journey, and the accumulation of old wounds and fresh injuries had left Marquis Xuanping physically exhausted.
Tonight, he needed to rest well and conserve his strength to face the potential blizzard that could strike at any time.
Knock knock knock.
A knocking sound came from outside the door.
Marquis Xuanping had just undone his belt and was preparing to soak in a hot bath. At the sound, he said, “Come in.”
The door was pushed open, and Chang Jing slowly walked in, holding a small wooden box in his hands.
He extended the box to Marquis Xuanping and said coolly, “Here. I’ve dug up the wild herb you asked for. There are also some flowers and fruit. If someone accidentally ingests the wild herb, just eat a couple of the fruit and they’ll be fine.”
All things in nature counterbalance one another, the reason purple herb poison had no known antidote was because its only cure was the fruit of the plant itself.
“Can that fruit cure other poisons too?” Marquis Xuanping asked. If so, perhaps Qing’er wouldn’t have needed to risk so much by ingesting the purple herb poison at all.
Chang Jing replied, “I don’t know. No one’s ever tested it. No one on the island has been poisoned.”
Marquis Xuanping thought of Ye Qing, now lying unconscious: I seriously doubt the truth of your ‘no one on the island has been poisoned’ claim.
He took the small box from Chang Jing. “By the way, why is there so much purple herb on your island?”
Chang Jing said, “It wasn’t always here. It was planted by the first Island Lord.”
Marquis Xuanping looked at him. “The first Island Lord? Your... ancestor?”
Chang Jing replied, “The first Island Lord wasn’t surnamed Chang. He was a mysterious figure. His spirit tablet is placed in the deepest part of the ancestral shrine, and only the successive sect leaders are qualified to offer sacrifices to him. I’m not the sect leader yet, so I don’t even know what his name was. That herb originally only grew here on our island, but some martial world folks later came and secretly dug it up. I just don’t get it, what’s so special about digging up some wild grass?”
So the wild herb, no, the purple herb found in all six states actually originated entirely from the Hidden Night Island?
Chang Jing snorted coldly. “It’s useless even if they dig it up. That wild herb only bears flowers and fruit when grown on Hidden Night Island.”
The first Island Lord was an incredibly powerful man. He had founded the Hidden Night Sect, far more impressive than that so-called Lord of the Shadows!
No arguments will be entertained!
——In Pucheng, all he ever heard was the Shadow Division boasting about the first Lord of the Shadows, which stirred a bit of rebellious defiance in teenage Chang Jing.
Marquis Xuanping didn’t know what use this information might have, but he quietly committed it to memory nonetheless.
He then glanced at Chang Jing, and seeing that the boy’s expression was sour and gloomy, he raised a hand to ruffle his hair with a chuckle, “What’s with the long face? Who are you scowling at?”
Chang Jing was clearly displeased by the gesture and said in a wounded tone, “Men’s heads, women’s waists. You can look, but you can’t touch.”
Marquis Xuanping burst out laughing. “Calling yourself a man? Has your hair even grown in fully yet?”
Chang Jing rolled his eyes skyward. After a moment, he turned his back, bowed his head, pulled open the waistband of his pants, and peeked inside.
Marquis Xuanping: “…”
……
Before dawn, Marquis Xuanping had already packed his belongings and set out on the road.
The purple herb was the most vital item. He had sealed the wooden box with a layer of wax, then tightly wrapped it in cowhide. That way, even if it was exposed to wind and snow, it wouldn’t get wet.
There were also rations for the journey, emergency ropes, and other supplies. They were all packed by Chang Kun’s men into a sealable rattan backpack.
There was just enough space left in the backpack to fit the wooden box.
With Chang Kun and the seven older sisters keeping watch, there was no way Chang Jing could leave. Ye Qing had been poisoned, and even after eating the antidote fruit, he would remain unconscious for several days.
But Marquis Xuanping had never intended to bring the two of them along in the first place.
He was going to save his son. Chang Jing and Ye Qing were someone else’s sons.
He departed alone, without alerting anyone.
Chang Jing was heartbroken.
He sat in his room, clutching the box of glass marbles he had secretly brought back, and stayed up the entire night without sleeping.
Outside in the courtyard, Chang Ying glanced at her younger brother’s tightly shut door, frowned, and hurried after him.
Back at the shore where they had landed yesterday, the guards had already prepared a snow carriage.
Marquis Xuanping walked forward.
The guard gave him a respectful salute and said, “Hero Xiao, this is the Island Lord’s snow carriage. It’s made of the lightest materials and is the fastest among them. Also, the icefield wolves pulling it have been replaced with stronger ones.”
Marquis Xuanping could tell at a glance that both the carriage and the wolves were far superior to what they had used when they first arrived.
Marquis Xuanping said, “Give my thanks to the Island Lord.”
The guard replied, “The Island Lord said this is only what he ought to do.”
Marquis Xuanping was ready to depart.
Just then, a chilling murderous aura suddenly rushed toward him from behind. Marquis Xuanping’s gaze sharpened as he swiftly dodged to the side and spun around to counter with a palm strike.
His opponent nimbly evaded the blow and followed up with a slash of her blade!
Marquis Xuanping recognized her immediately, it was Chang Jing’s eldest sister, Chang Ying.
Strange. Why was she trying to assassinate him?
The two exchanged over a dozen moves. Marquis Xuanping hadn’t used his full strength, and though Chang Ying seemed aggressive, she hadn’t gone for a lethal blow either.
After another exchange, Chang Ying was forced back. With a light tap of her toe, she landed ten paces away on the icy surface opposite Marquis Xuanping.
She fixed him with a cold, piercing stare and said, “Sure enough, the person who abducted my little brother is you!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
