Elsewhere, Shangguan Yan had left behind a blank imperial decree, demanding the Emperor to abdicate. The Emperor was seething with rage and naturally refused to comply so easily.
Though the imperial guards beside him had been handled by Xuanyuan Qi, the Emperor still had the support of a large force from the imperial guards and the Commandery Office.
Feigning compliance, he began to draft the decree, but used the opportunity to press a mechanism hidden by his desk. He dropped into a concealed tunnel just as a flare signal soared from the rooftop into the sky.
At once, the imperial guards and troops from the Commandery Office began surging toward the rear palace. But Xuanyuan Qi had already anticipated this. Working in perfect coordination with his son, he flung open the palace gates and thirty thousand Black Wind Cavalry and twenty thousand Shadow Division troops stormed into the imperial palace.
These were battle-hardened soldiers who had just returned from the front lines, their very presence emanating the fierce energy of warhorses and iron spears. The pampered forces guarding the capital had no chance of matching them.
Had Wang Man and Wang Xu’s forces been present, they might have stood a chance to turn the tide.
But alas, Shangguan Yan had deliberately kept them stuck on the road.
The imperial guards began to falter under the pressure. Deep within the tunnel, the Emperor activated a second mechanism, sending up another flare.
This one was a signal to contact Lord Yanshan in the outer city.
Lord Yanshan was not the naive figure the world believed him to be. He commanded a secret imperial army, which was the Emperor’s final line of defense.
But before he could even mobilize them, a sword quietly appeared behind him, lightly resting against his throat.
“I don’t want to hurt you.” Gu Changqing said.
Lord Yanshan responded coldly, “Do you think threatening me will work?”
Gu Changqing said calmly, “I know you’re not afraid of death, but what about your daughter’s life? Are you willing to gamble with that too?”
Lord Yanshan’s pupils contracted sharply. “What are you talking about?”
Gu Changqing tilted the sword ever so slightly, a silent gesture.
In the next moment, a Gu Family dark guard entered from outside the door, holding the sleeping Little County Princess in his arms.
Lord Yanshan’s expression changed drastically. “Little Xue! You… you despicable man! You’d even stoop so low as to threaten a child? Do the Crown Princess and Young Miss Gu know you’ve done this?”
He had remained behind in the capital with Gu Chengfeng and had already learned from him of Gu Jiao’s true identity. From the way this man acted, he could tell he was Gu Jiao’s older brother.
Gu Changqing’s expression remained completely unmoved. “They don’t need to know. Now choose. Your daughter, or your brother?”
Lord Yanshan ground his teeth. “You…”
Gu Changqing’s voice turned cold. “Don’t think I’ll show you mercy. You and I are the same; we each have someone we must protect, and for them, we’ll do whatever it takes. Even if it means going to hell after we die, it’s worth it.”
Lord Yanshan shut his eyes in anguish.
Gu Changqing was right. He had someone he needed to protect in this world, and for her sake, he would stop at nothing, even if it meant betraying the brother who trusted him the most.
Lord Yanshan handed over the command token.
……
After leaving Lord Yanshan’s residence, the Gu Family dark guard tore off the human-skin mask from his face and said with a cheeky grin, “Elder brother, your acting just now was perfect! You almost fooled even me! I was really afraid Lord Yanshan would refuse, and you’d actually stab the Little County Princess right there!”
Gu Changqing said sternly, “I wasn’t acting.”
Gu Chengfeng froze in place.
Gu Changqing glanced at him and then laughed aloud. “Idiot.”
Gu Changqing would never kill the Little County Princess, because Lord Yanshan would never allow it.
Lord Yanshan had never truly intended to send troops; he was merely trapped by the burden in his heart. By using The Little County Princess to coerce him, it gave him a face-saving excuse to retreat while maintaining the illusion of resistance.
The coup that had first erupted sixteen years ago under the command of the Xuanyuan Army was now playing out again, but this time, the Xuanyuan Army had won.
With grim expressions, the palace eunuchs who held the writing brush and the official seal aided the reigning monarch in drafting two imperial decrees——one announcing his abdication, and the other declaring the appointment of the new ruler.
Thus, the first female Emperor of Great Yan was born, and she chose the reign title Yong’an, meaning Eternal Peace.
The very first act of Emperor Yong’an upon ascending the throne was to clear the name of the Xuanyuan Family. The family had been falsely accused of over thirty charges, both great and small, and all the evidence to refute them had long been gathered.
However, the truth remained that the Xuanyuan Family had indeed committed treason all those years ago. As subjects, it was an unforgivable act. Yet the will of the people was not always shaped by reason.
Once Shangguan Yan revealed the prophecy from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, along with the secret collusion between the states of Jin and Liang and the former Emperor’s paranoia and persecution, the people were furious. They condemned the former Emperor for using the Xuanyuan Family to fight his wars and stabilize the realm, only to betray and slaughter them once the danger had passed.
Who could stomach such treachery?
When it came to stripping away the imperial family’s facade, Shangguan Yan had clearly inherited the former Emperor’s ruthlessness, and even surpassed him.
There was nothing others dared not do that she dared not reveal.
And through this, the people came to truly witness the capability and audacity of their new female Emperor.
Her second act as an Emperor was to compel the former Emperor to issue a decree of self-confession, listing his transgressions in detail and expressing deep remorse and repentance.
Of course, the former Emperor refused to write it, but did his consent matter?
Shangguan Yan had a hundred ways to make sure that confession decree was written.
Her third major act was to sentence the deposed Crown Prince to death, charging him with the crime of assassinating the former Crown Princess and her son, the Eldest Imperial Grandson.
When the imperial decree was issued, the deposed Crown Prince screamed that the Eldest Imperial Grandson was a fraud, warning the people not to be deceived. He accused Shangguan Yan of corrupting the imperial bloodline and claimed she was a traitor to the imperial family.
Unfortunately for him, those cries would never leave the gates of his residence.
Shangguan Yan restored Xuanyuan Li’s former title of Supreme Commander and posthumously honored him as the Sovereign King of Zhen (Zhen Gouwang).
She also intended to grant Xuanyuan Qi an imperial title, but Xuanyuan Qi firmly refused.
“Two sovereign kings from the same household would seem like excessive imperial favor. It would damage the Crown Princess’s reputation.”
“But the Xuanyuan Family fought to win half of Great Yan’s territory. What’s wrong with having two kings? I even want to make Zheng’er a marquis!”
“That must never happen.” Xuanyuan Qi replied sternly.
“But…”
“Listen to your uncle!” Xuanyuan Qi ordered sharply.
Shangguan Yan pouted with grievance, “Oh.”
Still, Shangguan Yan felt she owed her second uncle and Zheng’er. They had endured so much in the shadows for so many years, far more than most could ever imagine. Whenever she recalled the years her uncle had spent in the Ghost Mountain, her heart ached with every thought.
She thus granted Xuanyuan Qi the title of Marquis of Dingguo, and Xuanyuan Zheng was named the heir to that marquisate.
Xuanyuan Qi succeeded Xuanyuan Li as the Supreme Commander of the imperial army, while Xuanyuan Zheng became the Xuanyuan Family’s new Grand General. At the same time, he remained the third generation Lord of the Shadows of the Shadow Division.
Even the late Xuanyuan Sheng had his former title of General of Tiger Might reinstated.
While guarding the capital of Shengdu, Duke An had not been idle. He had asked the Imperial Advisor to help locate a geomantically auspicious resting place, where the remains of the Xuanyuan Family’s fallen sons and daughters could be reinterred.
He brought Gu Jiao along with him, and Gu Jiao personally carved each name into the gravestone.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
