Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The servant girl said a little sheepishly, “Is Madame here today as well to collect jewelry for the second young miss? Uh… and this is…”

She had caught sight of Gu Jiao standing beside Yao shi.

Yao shi straightened her expression and said solemnly, “She is the eldest young miss.”

The servant girl’s face changed with shock, and she quickly bowed in salute. “This servant Chunliu greets the eldest young miss.”

Yao shi turned to Gu Jiao and explained, “Chunliu is Jinyu’s personal maid who serves in her chambers… I forgot to tell you, Jinyu is also getting married. Her fiance is the third young master of the Marquis Changping Estate, surname Quan.”

This marriage had been chosen by Gu Jinyu herself.

Originally, Yao shi had selected for her the legitimate son of the Imperial Gate Attendant. Although his family’s standing was not particularly high, the young man was kind-hearted, upright in character, and diligent as well as ambitious.

His parents were also gentle and agreeable people.

Moreover, they did not look down on Gu Jinyu despite her poor reputation in the capital, and if she were to marry into that family, she could live out the rest of her life in peace and stability.

But she had said she did not wish to marry him.

It so happened that Marquis Changping returned to the capital from his fief to resume his official duties, bringing his family along with him.

Third Young Master Quan had fallen in love with Gu Jinyu at first sight and hurried to their door to formally propose marriage.

He was not from the capital and did not know much about Gu Jinyu’s reputation here. They decided to hold the wedding in the capital, and afterward move to his family’s fief.

Although Yao shi still harbored some resentment toward Gu Jinyu for the things she had done in the past, for the sake of the Gu Family’s third branch, who had once genuinely cherished Gu Jiao, she still hoped Gu Jinyu could find a good home.

Gu Jinyu’s relationship with Yao shi had grown much more distant, and her marriage was now being managed by Old Madame Gu.

“Chunliu entered the Marquis Ding’an Estate just last year, so you haven’t seen her before.” Yao shi said to Gu Jiao.

After completing her salute, Chunliu began quietly sizing Gu Jiao up.

Just looking at her eyes alone, they were extraordinarily beautiful, so cold yet captivating. Even the second young miss did not possess such a pair of eyes.

Chunliu said, “Madame, the second young miss’s wedding date has been set, it will be on the eighteenth of next month.”

“Wasn’t it already decided long ago?” Yao shi asked.

“…You never asked.” Chunliu replied in a soft voice.

Gu Jiao gave her a cool look. “Does a matter like this require my mother to ask in person? Shouldn’t you, as a servant, report it on your own?”

Chunliu said aggrievedly, “Th-this servant thought Lord Marquis and Old Madame had already mentioned it…”

Recently, an accident had occurred at the capital’s mines, and the Ministry of Works was urgently repairing them; Lord Marquis had not returned home for almost a month.

While they were speaking, the clip securing Gu Jiao’s veil came loose, and the veil slipped down.

Chunliu’s gaze instantly fell upon the birthmark on Gu Jiao’s face; she was stunned, then lowered her eyes, the corners of her mouth curling in open disdain.

No wonder she needed a veil to cover her face, it turned out she was so ugly.

Not even worth a single finger of the second young miss.

Suddenly, Gu Xiaobao reached out and grabbed Chunliu’s hair.

The little child still did not know how to control his own strength, so when he gripped, it was with neither gentleness nor measure.

Chunliu cried out in pain at the top of her voice!

She reached out to pry Gu Xiaobao’s hand away.

But Gu Xiaobao clutched so tightly that the harder she pulled, the more it hurt, until tears welled up in her eyes!

“Xiaobao!” Yao shi’s expression changed as she quickly held her son’s small arm. “You can’t grab people. Let go, quickly!”

Gu Xiaobao did not let go.

Yao shi grew anxious. “He’s not usually like this. He doesn’t grab people, and he doesn’t hit them… what’s wrong with him today?”

Chunliu was in such pain she was sobbing and wailing, and the other customers in the shop were all turning to look at her.

If it had been an adult bullying her, perhaps someone would have stepped in to help, but she was being grabbed by a one-year-old toddler, what could anyone do?

Today, Gu Xiaobao was a bit fierce.

Gu Jiao looked at her little brother, who was fierce in that adorably aggressive way, and said coolly, “Let go.”

His elder sister was even scarier than his mother.

Gu Xiaobao let go.

A large clump of Chunliu’s hair had been yanked out, and the top of her head was almost bald.

But since it was the young master who had done it, she could only swallow her anger and did not dare to speak out.

Adding to the fact that she had just lost face in front of so many people, she did not want to stay for even another moment that she even forgot entirely about collecting Gu Jinyu’s jewelry, and simply burst into tears as she ran out.

Yao shi frowned as she looked at the son in her arms, and she said to him in a stern tone, “Xiaobao, what happened to you today? Why did you reach out and grab someone like that?”

She truly was angry this time.

Gu Xiaobao looked at Yao shi with an expression of pure innocence, and after three seconds, he cupped Yao shi’s face in his tiny hands and said in his soft, milky voice, “Mom, Xiaobao loves.”

Yao shi: “…”

Everyone around them was amused by the child, telling Yao shi not to blame him too harshly, that he was still young, and these things could be taught slowly.

Only Yao shi knew that at home, her son was truly very well-behaved and remarkably sensible; it was only today that he was acting oddly.

Gu Jiao gave the little fellow a glance, then raised her knuckles and tapped him lightly on the forehead.

After all, they were real siblings by blood, so once they became familiar, it happened rather quickly. By the time they were seated in the private room choosing jewelry, Gu Xiaobao was already willing to play with Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao placed him on her lap, and he made a token struggle or two without any real effort before going still and letting her fuss over him as she pleased.

But he still would not call her “big sister.”

Plans always failed to keep up with changes; they ended up spending longer than expected choosing the jewelry, and by the time they came out, it was already afternoon. Gu Xiaobao was fast asleep in Gu Jiao’s arms, drooling profusely in his slumber.

At this hour, Grandaunt was also napping, and Gu Jiao did not wish to disturb her. “Mother, why don’t I go see my adoptive father first?”

Yao shi considered for a moment, then said gently, “That’s fine. Since Duke An has only just arrived, you should receive him properly.”

Gu Jiao gave a small “Mm,” and said, “I will.”

The carriage first took Yao shi and her son back to Bishui Alley, and then went on to take Gu Jiao to the street she had mentioned.

The coachman, looking ahead at the long line of people moving crates and chests, felt his scalp tingle and said, “Young miss, it’s all people up ahead. Our carriage can’t get through.”

“Just stop here.” Gu Jiao said. “You can head back first; I’ll have another carriage for my return later.”

“Yes, young miss.”

The coachman turned the carriage around.

Gu Jiao proceeded on foot toward the residence that Duke An had prepared.

She had only walked a few steps when someone suddenly called out to her.

“Elder sister?”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
