Elsewhere, Gu Jiao was being led by a certain increasingly sly Little Marquis, who was holding her small hand as they walked onto the bustling streets.
That night, there happened to be a small lantern festival, and the marketplace was lively and crowded.
Gu Jiao wore a veil, strolling shoulder to shoulder with him amidst the endless stream of people. The unique night breeze of the State of Zhao brushed against her, and in her heart surged an unconscious sense of peace and contentment.
“To be able to walk like this, carefree on the street… it really isn’t easy.” She said softly.
Xiao Heng’s eyes were filled with her. He smiled and said, “You’ve worked hard, my dear fiancee.”
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow, “The same goes for you.”
Xiao Heng let out a quiet laugh.
His features were like those painted in a scroll, refined as jade, ethereal like an immortal.
He had always been cold and aloof, but at some unknown point, as long as he was with her, he would unconsciously find himself smiling.
The two of them held hands, concealed beneath the wide sleeves of Xiao Heng’s robe.
Gu Jiao said, “Sometimes, I feel like I’ve known you for a long time.”
Xiao Heng nodded. “Indeed. It has been quite a while. Four years.”
Gu Jiao thought for a moment. “Mm… I suppose so.”
Xiao Heng gave her a smiling glance. “Of course it has.”
Gu Jiao mused aloud, “But the very first time I saw you, I felt an unusual fondness for you.”
Xiao Heng teased, “Because I’m good-looking?”
This girl was always saying he was good-looking.
Gu Jiao pondered for a moment but couldn’t think of a reason to refute him.
Her fondness for him… perhaps it truly did begin with his face.
After all, wasn’t she a face-connoisseur?
Though she had been scolded by her godfather countless times——don’t always look at a man’s face.
Xiao Heng had no idea she was seriously considering this question. He sighed lightly and said, “These four years, we’ve been apart more than together. Either I was on the road for examinations, or you were marching into battle. Speaking of which, back then, what made you so certain I would pass? You even jumped into the freezing water just for one county exam paper.”
Gu Jiao replied, “I don’t know, I just felt you would place high. Even if you didn’t, it wouldn’t matter. I told you before, I would take care of you.”
Xiao Heng looked ahead at the road, then back at her, the corner of his lips curving upward. “Then, my dear wife, I’ll be in your care from now on.”
Gu Jiao curled her lips and deliberately drawled, “We aren’t married yet. Isn’t it a little too early to be calling me ‘wife’?”
Just as her words fell, a burly man stumbled forward and crashed into them. Xiao Heng raised one arm to shield Gu Jiao, but in doing so, he himself took the hit.
The man swung a fist at Xiao Heng, only to have his wrist instantly seized by Gu Jiao, who flipped him to the ground!
He fell flat on his back, humiliated and furious, shouting, “Who is he to you?!”
Gu Jiao snapped back fiercely, “He’s my husband!”
The corner of Xiao Heng’s lips lifted, and a starlight-like smile glimmered in his eyes.
……
It was only a small incident. That man was no match for Gu Jiao and left in disgrace. The two continued strolling through the lantern festival.
Suddenly, up ahead at the entrance of a small alley, beside a street stall, a man and woman seemed to have gotten into a heated quarrel.
The man’s voice sounded somewhat familiar.
Both of them looked over and were just in time to see Gu Chengfeng spring up from his stool like a cat with its fur standing on end. “Surnamed Yuan! What nonsense are you spouting?!”
“Am I spouting nonsense? Your elder brother is dishonest! He clearly wasn’t the one who caught the phoenix bird, yet he pretends as if he did!”
“What phoenix bird?! What nonsense is this?!”
Gu Chengfeng had been out all day and knew nothing about his elder brother’s newly arranged betrothal.
Yuan Tong stood with her hands on her hips. “Don’t play dumb! If it weren’t for my sister stopping me, I would’ve tattled to my grandfather long ago!”
Gu Chengfeng sneered. “Go ahead and tattle then!”
Yuan Tong stomped her foot. “I’m only sparing you for my sister’s sake!”
Gu Chengfeng said mockingly, “Oh my, your sister’s face must carry a lot of weight then!”
Yuan Tong ignored that jab and quickly seized back the initiative. “I would never want to become relatives with someone like you!”
Gu Chengfeng gave a cold laugh. “You think I want to become relatives with you?”
Yuan Tong gritted her teeth. “You hornet!”
Gu Chengfeng shot back without missing a beat, “And you, round barrel! No, wait, with how silly you are, I should call you idiot barrel!”
“Who are you calling idiot barrel?!” Yuan Tong was so furious she grabbed a stool and hurled it at him.
But Gu Chengfeng, being trained in martial arts, easily dodged around the table. He laughed triumphantly. “Come on, come on! Idiot barrel! Idiot barrel! Idiot barrel!”
Yuan Tong was beside herself with rage. In all her life, she had never met someone so aggravating.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng both recognized the voices. To their surprise, Gu Chengfeng seemed to know her, and from the sound of it, their relationship was far from ordinary.
The two of them, with perfect tacit understanding, made no move to intervene in the quarrel.
Gu Chengfeng was the same age as Xiao Heng. Last year he had also come of age and gone through the capping ceremony. At that time, he was posing as the State of Yan’s Emperor, and it had been the Imperial Advisor and Duke An who personally conducted the ceremony for him.
In all the world, he was the very first person to have those two preside over his coming-of-age ceremony.
But judging by his current behavior, it seemed the ceremony had been wasted. Just look at how he was still acting like a child.
“What are you thinking about?”
As they continued walking, Xiao Heng noticed the thoughtful look on Gu Jiao’s face and couldn’t help but ask.
Gu Jiao said, “I was thinking, I wasn’t there when you had your capping ceremony. How should I make it up to you?”
The capping ceremony was the ancient rite of passage for men, carrying immense significance.
Xiao Heng and Shangguan Qing had both come of age last twelfth month, when Gu Jiao had been stationed at the border, preparing for the campaign against the State of Jin.
Suddenly, Xiao Heng bent his head close, his lips brushing near her ear as he whispered, “Make it up to me on our wedding night.”
His voice was low, rich, and magnetic, sending a tingling, ticklish shiver through her ears.
Gu Jiao lifted a hand to rub at her ear. “Oh.”
Xiao Heng chuckled. “That’s it? You’re not even going to refuse? What if I’m asking you to do something bad? Something very, very bad.”
Gu Jiao answered in all seriousness, “That’s fine too.”
Xiao Heng drew in a deep breath. Gu JiaoJiao, you truly have no idea what a man’s “bad” can mean.
He was no longer the simple, innocent boy from Qingquan Village, the one who could share a bed with her without ever harboring a stray thought.
He had grown up.
He had grown into a wicked and dangerous wolf, always wanting to devour her whole.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
