Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The weather was hot, so dinner was set in the courtyard.

Tonight, Old Chief was in charge of the cooking, preparing a large spread of State of Zhao specialties according to the children’s tastes, and also taking into account the preferences of Duke An and Xuanyuan father and son, he made a few State of Yan dishes as well.

Little Jing Kong said, “Granduncle, I want to eat brown sugar glutinous rice cakes.”

Old Chief said without hesitation, “There’s none left.”

“So quickly, it’s all gone.” Empress Dowager Zhuang muttered. She also wanted to eat some.

Old Chief cleared his throat, and with his face unchanged, he said to Little Jing Kong, “Seems there might still be a little glutinous rice flour left in the jar. I’ll go check.”

Little Jing Kong crossed his arms and huffed, “When Grandaunt wants to eat, there is, but when I want to eat, there isn’t! Granduncle, you’re biased!”

Old Chief panicked. “What nonsense are you spouting! I just remembered there is! I’ll make it for you! Right now!”

Saying so, he hurried seriously into the kitchen and made a bowl of brown sugar glutinous rice cakes, sprinkled with white sesame, then placed it… in front of Empress Dowager Zhuang.

A whole ten thousand miles away from Little Jing Kong!

Little Jing Kong, who couldn’t reach it even with a ladder: “???”

……

At the end of the meal, Gu Xiaoshun ate a bowl of longevity noodles, while Little Jing Kong and Gu Xiaobao each got a small bowl of longevity noodles too.

Since today was Gu Xiaoshun’s birthday, the children were spared from martial practice.

Xuanyuan Qi went to the backyard to play with Little Jing Kong and the others, while Gu Yan, taking advantage of a moment when no one was watching, pulled Gu Changqing away toward Granduncle’s courtyard.

“What is it, what’s the matter?” Gu Changqing asked Gu Yan.

Gu Yan replied, “A private lesson.”

Gu Changqing was momentarily stunned before realizing that Gu Yan wanted to continue practicing the fist technique from last time.

Gu Yan’s motivation for learning martial arts was simple: to show off in front of the little monk. He had no expectations of truly becoming a great martial arts master or a chivalrous hero.

Gu Changqing did not care about his reasons. Practicing martial arts strengthened the body, and as long as Gu Yan was willing, he saw no reason not to teach.

Looking at Gu Yan with indulgence, Gu Changqing said, “You’ve already finished learning the fist technique from last time. I’ll teach you a palm technique now.”

Gu Yan’s eyes lit up. “Is it the Iron Sand Palm? The kind where you can thrust your hands into burning hot sand and swish swish swish?”

Gu Changqing chuckled. “No. To reach that level, you’d need at least seven or eight years of relentless hard training.”

“Oh.” Gu Yan only wanted something he could master quickly to show off, not something that required painstaking effort.

So Gu Changqing taught him a palm technique that looked mighty and impressive, but in reality was only good for strengthening the body.

……

It grew late into the night, and the children, tired from playing, were ready to return home with the rest.

Since Grandaunt was getting old, Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng did not bring up the matter of the Sword Lodge before her and Granduncle.

Xuanyuan Qi and Duke An were in the know. They privately questioned Xiao Heng and learned the details of what had been coaxed out of Young Gentleman Ming Yue.

The group sat in the carriage, together with Little Jing Kong, who had fallen fast asleep as soon as they boarded.

Xuanyuan Qi was holding Little Jing Kong in his arms.

The carriage was pulled by the horse king along with another Black Wind Cavalry horse.

With the horse king in front, the carriage practically drove itself.

Black Wind King walked steadily alongside, keeping a close watch so the horse king would not wander off midway to play in some corner.

Xuanyuan Qi said, “Your plan is to first test things out. Spread word and lure the people of the Sword Lodge to come?”

Xiao Heng nodded. “That’s right. If this strategy doesn’t work, then my father will personally make a trip to the Sword Lodge.”

“The people of the Sword Lodge will not come.” Xuanyuan Qi said with certainty.

“Why?” Gu Jiao looked at him in puzzlement.

He answered, “The young master of the Sword Lodge has been missing for many years. If they intended to come, they would have already. Your father has only just gained a daughter; it’s not fitting for him to part from his wife and child. This trip, Zheng’er and I will go.”

Liao Chen had no objections to this, for he had long wanted to visit the Sword Lodge, and while at it, settle an old grudge for the Shadow Division from back in the day.

——And it absolutely was not because he wanted to avoid that pompous Taoist.

“By the way, where is my daughter-in-law?” Xuanyuan Qi suddenly asked.

Liao Chen: “…”

……

On the other side, Empress Dowager Zhuang also returned to the palace.

She glanced at Old Chief, who had once again shamelessly hitched a ride on her carriage, and her eyes were like daggers slicing through him.

Old Chief remained completely unruffled as he said, “It just came to me, I have an urgent matter to report to His Majesty.”

After a pause, under the Empress Dowager’s sharp, frosty gaze, he added, “My carriage broke down.”

Empress Dowager Zhuang could not be bothered with him. Hugging her jar of candied fruits, she closed her eyes to rest.

Today’s candied fruits were handmade by Gu Jiao, and Empress Dowager Zhuang cherished them dearly.

Upon entering the palace, Empress Dowager Zhuang cast a sidelong glance at someone and said, “Still not getting off the carriage?”

“Ah, we’ve arrived? So soon.” The Old Chief grumbled twice in dissatisfaction, then, under the Empress Dowager’s cutting glare, sulkily stepped down.

The carriage carried Empress Dowager Zhuang toward Renshou Palace. Old Chief silently watched it vanish into the distance, until a palace guard approached, saluted him, and said, “Lord Huo, the palace gates are about to be locked. Do you have a memorandum to present to His Majesty? This servant can ask them to wait.”

“No need, it’s nothing.” The Old Chief flicked his wide sleeves, clasped his hands behind his back, and strode out of the palace with long steps.

The guard was left standing there, scratching his head in confusion, utterly baffled, “Why would you come into the palace in the middle of the night? Was it just to admire the moon?”

……

Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao returned to the Princess Mansion, first going to pay respects to Princess Xinyang, only to be told that the Princess was not there.

A servant girl reported, “There was some trouble at the military camp today, so Lord Marquis went there and didn’t return even by evening. The young miss wanted her father, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath. The Princess had no choice but to take her out to see the lanterns.”

She glanced around, then lowered her voice and said, “Actually, they went to look for Lord Marquis!”

Everyone in the mansion knew perfectly well, but who would dare puncture Princess Xinyang’s dignity? Did they have a death wish?

Xiao Heng couldn’t help but laugh and sigh at once. After being the domineering matriarch of the household for so many years, always having the last word, Princess Xinyang had one day ended up completely at the mercy of a little child.

Indeed, more capable than her two elder brothers.

The young couple returned to Lanting Courtyard.

Xiao Heng carried Little Jing Kong back to their room and gave him a bath. The boy slept like a log, not waking even when his bad brother-in-law turned him this way and that.

But when Xiao Heng took out his nightclothes to change him, he suddenly noticed that the sleeves and trouser legs were a little too short.

And it was in that instant that Xiao Heng truly realized, the little one had grown.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
