At the end of the eighth month, the ice fields had just passed the warmest season of the year. In some areas, the ice layer was not particularly thick, so the icefield wolves had to tread with utmost caution.

The leading young wolf king appeared rather youthful, yet it possessed a gift far beyond that of an ordinary wolf, with an extraordinarily keen sense for danger. Whenever the ice beneath its paws began to thin, it could immediately sense the change and react in time, either by changing direction or by slowing its pace.

Liao Chen and Xiao Heng took turns standing at the rear to drive the sled, giving commands to the icefield wolves and steering carefully to maintain the sled’s stability.

Gu Jiao and Taoist Qingfeng also gave sled driving a try.

Gu Jiao’s problem was her speed. She went so fast that the sled nearly took flight, leading to a unanimous vote from the others to remove her from driving duty.

Taoist Qingfeng, on the other hand, had a terrible sense of direction. The group had barely closed their eyes for a short nap, and when they woke up, they discovered that Taoist Qingfeng had somehow led the wolves and sled all the way back to the border of the State of Yan.

Feng Wuxiu, who easily got dizzy riding the sled, could hardly stay seated without vomiting, let alone stand up to drive it himself.

By the latter days of the eighth month, the icefields were met with the first snowstorm of the year. Unable to find any place to shelter from the snow, the group had no choice but to continue their arduous journey through the wind and frost.

Though the blizzard at that time was not considered heavy compared to what would come later in the freezing season, even so, each of them could feel the strain of moving forward.

Both Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao thought of Marquis Xuanping.

It was merely the light snow of the eighth month, and they had the assistance of icefield wolves, yet their progress was this difficult. Neither of them dared to imagine how Marquis Xuanping had managed to bring back the purple herb and the fruits from the icefield under even harsher weather conditions.

As dusk approached, the snow finally ceased. Everyone was nearly frozen into ice sculptures atop the sled, and the icefield wolves were so exhausted that they collapsed, unable to take another step forward.

“Are you all right?” Xiao Heng asked, holding Gu Jiao close in his arms.

“I’m fine.” Gu Jiao replied, though when she tried to speak, she realized her lips had become so stiff that she could barely open her mouth, her voice coming out as numb and unclear sounds.

Feng Wuxiu was also being shielded in his brother’s arms. Though he was indeed cold, at least he hadn’t frozen to death.

Liao Chen was the one driving the sled.

He stood at the tail of the sled, wrapped entirely in thick furs, a fur cap covering his ears. His long eyelashes were crusted with frost, and the snowflakes on his cheeks had not melted, forming what almost looked like an icy mask on his face.

“Hey.” His lips were already frozen stiff, barely able to move, and his voice came out as a muffled mumble from within his mouth. “Pompous… take… off… glove…”

He was wearing gloves, but they had already frozen completely onto the reins, and his fingers had gone completely numb.

Taoist Qingfeng, though he often had the urge to kill him, wasn’t about to take advantage of someone’s weakness.

He moved his own stiff body forward, used a dagger to chip the ice off Liao Chen’s gloves, and slowly infused a trace of internal force to warm his fingers.

That was the same method he had earlier used to shield Feng Wuxiu from the biting cold.

Meanwhile, Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng took some firewood from the sled and built a bonfire on the snow.

“There’s fire! There’s fire!” Feng Wuxiu hurried over, squatting down and extending his hands to warm them.

Xiao Heng went to fetch the dry rations, while Gu Jiao skewered the food on sticks and roasted them over the flames. Xiao Heng took the icefish they had caught along the way and began feeding the icefield wolves.

Sitting by the fire, Gu Jiao turned her head, resting her cheek in one hand as she watched him. “At home, I never see you feed the chickens, dogs, birds, or horses, yet when it comes to wolves, you’re so diligent.”

“Achoo!” Feng Wuxiu let out a loud sneeze.

Gu Jiao reached out and felt his forehead.

“I’m fine, it’s just that my nose feels itchy. Wait, does it smell like…” He sniffed around, his nose twitching, and then leaned closer to Gu Jiao.

“What are you doing?” Gu Jiao asked, looking at him oddly.

Feng Wuxiu asked, “Did you hide some food?”

“No.” Gu Jiao replied sternly.

“Chili peppers.” He muttered before sneezing again, “Whenever I smell chili peppers, I start sneezing… Achoo! Achoo!”

Gu Jiao lowered her head and saw that a bit of the dried meat in her pouch had indeed been exposed.

Under Feng Wuxiu’s wide-eyed stare, she calmly tucked the little piece of meat back inside as if nothing had happened.

“These rations aren’t enough.” Liao Chen said, glancing at the dry buns roasting over the fire. Leisurely, he went to a nearby patch of ice, carved a hole, and caught a few plump fish. After cleaning them, he returned to the fire with the catch.

He sat down across from Taoist Qingfeng, handed him one of the skewered fish, and asked, “Can you roast fish?”

“No.” Taoist Qingfeng replied coldly.

“Your brother really doesn’t know how to do it?” Liao Chen asked Feng Wuxiu, who was sitting beside Taoist Qingfeng.

Feng Wuxiu nodded vigorously. “My brother can’t do anything! He can’t cook, and he can’t sew clothes either!”

Liao Chen looked at Taoist Qingfeng in disbelief. “If you can’t cook and you get lost in the woods, how did you even manage to survive?”

Taoist Qingfeng answered calmly, “By eating wild fruits.”

Liao Chen’s mouth twitched slightly.

Liao Chen’s skill in roasting fish was on par with Gu Jiao’s. The fish he grilled was tender and juicy, and once he sprinkled a pinch of fine salt and spices on top, the aroma alone was enough to make mouths water——it was a delicacy worthy of praise.

Feng Wuxiu devoured the fish eagerly, his eyes lighting up. “Brother Liao Chen, your roasted fish is amazing! It’s even better than the ones at Tianxiang Pavilion! When we return to Shengdu… will I be able to eat your roasted fish again?”

Liao Chen smiled good-naturedly and said, “If your brother doesn’t kill me, I wouldn’t mind roasting a few more for you.”

Feng Wuxiu tilted his head curiously. “But why would my brother want to kill you?”

A playful smile curved on Liao Chen’s lips. “Because——”

Before he could finish, Taoist Qingfeng picked up a fish and stuffed it coldly into Liao Chen’s mouth.

Liao Chen took a bite of the roasted fish, then held it in his hand and said with a grin, “Because I’m stronger than your brother, and he’s jealous of me.”

“Oh.” Feng Wuxiu buried his head back into his fish, his mouth too full to speak up in defense of his brother.

Xiao Heng tore off the softest part of the fish belly and handed it to Gu Jiao.

Liao Chen chuckled softly, picked up another roasted fish from the rack, and handed it to Taoist Qingfeng with a teasing look. “It’s threefold clean meat, you can eat it.”

Taoist Qingfeng said flatly, “Since when do monks care about eating threefold clean meat?”

Feng Wuxiu puffed his cheeks and said, “Brother, he said you can eat it!”

Taoist Qingfeng gave him a frosty glare as if to say, whose brother are you, really?

……

The next day, the group continued their journey. After three days of travel, they finally caught sight of Hidden Night Island rising above the icy plains as night fell on the third day of the ninth month.

Over the past few days, there had been several rounds of light and moderate snowfall, and the temperature had dropped significantly compared to when they had first set out. The ice layer had thickened considerably, making their passage toward the island much easier.

The icefield wolves pulled the sled all the way to the ferry dock of Hidden Night Island.

However, it was already late, and the dock had closed. A towering iron gate like that of a fortress stood before them, barring their way.

The patrolling guards above the island spotted them. The leader among them quickly shouted in alarm, “Who goes there?”

Xiao Heng took out the Hidden Night Island token that Chang Jing had left him, his expression calm and cool as he said, “From the Marquis Xuanping Estate, I am Xiao Heng.”

The leading guard asked cautiously, “Are you the Little Marquis of Zhao?”

Xiao Heng replied, “I am.”

The guard frowned in suspicion. “How do I know you’re not an impostor? Wait here. I’ll go report to the Island Lord.”

The moment he finished speaking, a tall and broad figure suddenly descended from the sky, landing with the sound of rushing wind. In one swift motion, he grabbed both Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao from the sled and leaped back up onto the island in a blur of speed——

Leaving behind only the commanding view of his broad back for the stunned guards below.

All the guards stood frozen in confusion. “???”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
