Princess Xinyang suddenly found herself in an awkward situation.

She had never imagined that she would encounter Xiao Ji in a place like this. What had she just said? Had this man heard any of it?

The usually composed and serene Princess Xinyang suddenly lost her calm. Her thoughts became a jumbled mess, and she stood there dazed and bewildered, looking very much like a peacock that had momentarily lost its wits.

Yu Jin, who had served the princess for many years, was seeing her in such a state for the very first time. Forget about the princess, she herself was almost frightened out of her senses.

Wasn’t the Marquis supposed to be stationed at the military camp?

Why had he appeared at the post station in Li County?

Could it be that——

Yu Jin glanced at a certain spoiled little princess, and her heart skipped a beat.

If the Marquis had come all the way here to meet that little princess, then the relationship between husband and wife was bound to completely collapse today.

The Dongyi princess followed Princess Xinyang’s gaze and also noticed the newcomer. Her confidence instantly returned. She rose from the ground, brushed the snow off her clothes, and, like a nimble swallow, ran straight toward Xiao Ji.

Princess Xinyang abruptly came back to her senses. She frowned as she watched the girl reach Xiao Ji’s side, cling to his arm in an intimate manner, and even give her a cold, disdainful hum.

Princess Xinyang, provoked, was on the verge of exploding.

Reason told her that as a princess, she possessed dignity and grace, and should not stoop to compete with others for affection.

But the scene before her was truly infuriating.

It was not jealousy that burned within her, it was that her authority as a princess had been blatantly challenged!

Yes, that was exactly it!

How dare a mere daughter of a barbarian tribe act so arrogantly upon the territory of the State of Zhao? Such behavior was intolerable!

Yu Jin’s eyes widened at the sight.

Lord Marquis, are you seeking death?

You actually allowed a woman to cling to your arm right in front of the princess?

The Dongyi princess still refused to let go of Xiao Ji’s arm. Pointing straight at Princess Xinyang, she complained coquettishly, “You came just in time, she bullied me!”

Xiao Ji had already recovered from his initial shock. His handsome face returned to its usual calm and composed expression.

He spoke casually, “Mm, I saw it.”

The Dongyi princess made a mischievous face at Princess Xinyang, then continued tattling to Xiao Ji. “And that’s not all, she even dared to lie that she was a princess from the capital! That she was your wife! Tell me, isn’t that ridiculous?”

As she spoke, she withdrew the hand that had been holding onto his arm, placed both hands on her hips, and declared to Princess Xinyang, “Now that the real one is here, let’s see how you continue to lie!”

Princess Xinyang no longer wished to look at the two of them. She turned her head away coldly.

Xiao Ji glanced at her with a half-smile. His gaze seemed to pierce through the thin veil that covered her face, yet his words were directed to the Dongyi princess. “She wasn’t lying. She truly is… my wedded wife.”

The final four words made Princess Xinyang’s slender fingers tighten, and the embarrassment that had barely been suppressed by her anger rose once again within her chest.

That man… just how much had he heard?

That was not what she had meant at all!

She——

“She… she… she really is… but…” The Dongyi princess looked at Princess Xinyang in disbelief, then turned to Xiao Ji. “But isn’t she the princess from the capital? Why would she come all the way to the East?”

See? There was no one in the world who would ever believe that there was any genuine bond of husband and wife between Princess Xinyang and Xiao Ji.

Even if she had traveled a thousand miles to find her husband, in the eyes of others, it could only mean that she had come with ulterior motives.

The Dongyi princess tugged at Xiao Ji’s sleeve and whispered, “Did your Emperor from the State of Zhao… send her here to keep an eye on you?”

Princess Xinyang clenched her fists tightly.

She was not deaf!

Xiao Ji smiled faintly. “Get in the carriage first.”

The Dongyi princess shot Princess Xinyang one last cold glance, gave a disdainful hum, and turned away.

Xiao Ji suddenly added in a meaningful tone, “One shouldn’t be too arrogant. Being young is nothing to boast about.”

The Dongyi princess frowned slightly, clearly not understanding why Xiao Ji was saying the exact same words as that woman.

Princess Xinyang, however, felt even more embarrassed than before, wishing with all her heart that she had never uttered those words at all.

“Yu Jin, we’re leaving!” She said coldly without sparing Xiao Ji a glance, striding straight past him.

No one knew that the moment she brushed past him, a sudden and inexplicable tension surged through her heart. It was a strange feeling, perhaps a faint fear that he might reach out, stop her, and say something that would utterly destroy her composure.

But he did not.

He behaved with perfect restraint.

Princess Xinyang clenched her handkerchief and walked out of the post station without looking back.

Xiao Ji followed shortly after. The two of them stood outside the station, separated by the full length of a carriage.

Princess Xinyang kept her gaze fixed ahead, refusing to even glance in his direction.

Xiao Ji, his hands tucked into a fox-fur hand warmer, stood tall and straight, his posture noble and elegant, like a pine or a bamboo in the snow.

As long as this man kept his mouth shut, he could indeed be considered the most refined and distinguished gentleman in the entire State of Zhao.

He turned his head toward her, a faint smile playing on his lips, and said, “Get in the carriage.”

Princess Xinyang still did not look at him and replied in a cool, distant tone, “I have my own carriage.”

Xiao Ji glanced toward her carriage and said, “Are you sure about that?”

Princess Xinyang frowned in confusion and turned her head to look at her own carriage, only to nearly choke in fury at what she saw.

Long Yi’s charcoal stick had rolled under the wheel, and in order to retrieve it, he had actually removed the wheel of the carriage…

Xiao Ji said calmly, “Or if you prefer, you may ride in Chang Jing’s carriage.”

Just at that moment, Chang Jing happened to arrive, driving a grand and imposing carriage.

Without another word, Princess Xinyang climbed aboard that one.

She had barely settled herself when the curtain was suddenly lifted. Thinking it was Yu Jin, she looked up, only to find herself staring straight into Xiao Ji’s face.

Her expression darkened instantly. “Don’t you have your own carriage?”

Xiao Ji’s lips curved slightly. “This is my carriage.”

Princess Xinyang’s voice turned cold. “You just said it was Chang Jing’s.”

Xiao Ji sat down beside her, lazily brushing some dust off his robe, and said, “It’s also mine.”

Princess Xinyang no longer wanted to speak to him at all.

The attendants at the post station were quick to gauge the situation. Regardless of whether the woman was truly a princess, anyone who could share a carriage with Marquis Xuanping was clearly not someone they could afford to offend.

They hurried to prepare a new carriage for Yu Jin.

Long Yi, of course, had no need for one; he preferred traveling across rooftops.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
