Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

In the State of Yan, there was also a custom of offering incense on the first day of the lunar new year, and when Gu Jiao mentioned “mountain climbing,” what she really meant was going to the temple to offer incense.

They knew they could no longer get the very first incense of the year, so they tried their best to arrive at the temple before noon, offer a few sticks of incense, and then have a vegetarian meal.

The three little ones remembered that they were going out to play and came over early, while Xiao Heng had been exhausted for most of the night and did not wake up when the children arrived.

Xiao Yan looked at her father, who for the first time in her memory had overslept, and could not help recalling the scene of her father carrying her uncle on his back the night before, so she asked her mother whether her father had actually been unable to carry her uncle and had gotten injured.

If Father were injured, then there would surely be no climbing the mountain today.

But Father had just said it did not hurt!

“Yay!”

“We’re going mountain climbing!”

Xiao Yan nimbly scrambled out of bed, first tugging Xiao Cong up with her, then clumsily lifting down the two-year-old little Xiao Xuan.

She said with a beaming smile, “Father, you’re amazing! Uncle Jing Kong is such a big person and you could still carry him!”

That was like placing a tall hat firmly on his head, leaving Xiao Heng no chance to back out; otherwise, wouldn’t he have ended up looking like an unimpressive father?

After all, one had to maintain face in front of one’s wife, and dignity in front of one’s children.

Clearing his throat, he kept his expression perfectly calm and said, “Ahem, of course. How much does your uncle weigh anyway?”

“Heehee!” Xiao Yan, happily holding her two little brothers, skipped out of the room. “Time to go climb the mountain!”

Gu Jiao looked at him with curved brows and smiling eyes.

Xiao Heng grabbed her hands, flipped her lightly beneath him, and in a playful yet possessive punishment, bit her soft lips while saying fiercely, “Was that on purpose?”

Gu Jiao blinked guiltily and asked, “Then are you going to punish me?”

Xiao Heng, already in the middle of punishing her: “…”

If this did not count as punishment, then it would have to be a deeper kind of punishment, but after that he would probably not be leaving the house at all today.

Taking a deep breath, he pressed another harsh kiss onto her lips as “interest” and said, “Remember this for now. I’ll punish you properly when we get back tonight.”

Having said that, he forced himself to restrain the impulse that she had so effortlessly stirred in him early in the morning and finally let go of her.

Then he saw her take out one box, two boxes, three boxes of little Dudu from the little medicine chest.

She was so obedient, willingly submitting to punishment, it was almost unbearable.

Xiao Heng: “…”

……

Xuanyuan Xi lived in Zhaoyang Palace.

After waking up their father, the three little children went on to wake Uncle Jing Kong.

Xuanyuan Xi had been knocked flat by a cup of wine and slept through the night in a drunken stupor, and when he woke up his head was buzzing.

“Uncle! Uncle!” Xiao Yan bounced around at the foot of his bed, calling out excitedly, “Wake up quickly! We’re going climbing!”

“Mmm…” Xuanyuan Xi groggily raised one hand to shield his eyes from the harsh morning light.

At that precise moment, a young palace maid came in carrying a basin to help him wash up.

Her eyes swept past him, and when they caught the sight of the lazily beautiful young man in the morning light, her gaze inadvertently fell on his slightly rolling Adam’s apple, and she felt her chest tighten with a sudden flutter.

Her steps staggered, and the water in the basin spilled everywhere!

“Get up! Get up!”

Xiao Yan transformed into a little trumpet spirit, chattering nonstop right beside Xuanyuan Xi’s ear.

Xuanyuan Xi pulled the quilt over his head, but she simply buried her little head under the covers as well, continuing her tireless barrage of noise.

The universe had its ways of balancing things.

Xuanyuan Xi, who had long been the one pestering others, finally experienced the kind of despair that Grandaunt and the others must have felt.

He was so overwhelmed by Xiao Yan’s clamor that he could no longer maintain his temper, and with a sense of utter resignation, he sat up and said, “Alright, alright, your uncle is getting up.”

……

After breakfast, the group boarded a carriage and headed to Lingyin Temple in the outer city.

Shangguan Yan was not among those accompanying them, and only Shangguan Qing and Xiao Heng’s entire family went together.

There were far too many worshippers coming to the temple, and the carriages could go no farther than a mile away from the foot of the mountain.

The group disembarked and continued on foot.

With so many people around and all kinds of eyes watching, it was impossible to let the children walk on the ground, so Shangguan Qing carried Xiao Cong, while Xiao Heng carried little Xiao Xuan.

Xiao Yan poked her little head out from behind Gu Jiao, grinning as she called out to Xuanyuan Xi, “Uncle Jing Kong!”

Xuanyuan Xi’s brow twitched, and he braced himself as he reached out and picked Xiao Yan up.

Xiao Yan bobbed her head and chattered nonstop the entire way, to the point where Xuanyuan Xi felt his head was about to explode.

Xiao Heng, on the other hand, carried little Xiao Xuan in one arm while holding Gu Jiao’s hand with the other, strolling leisurely behind them.

Seeing the former little monk being harassed by Xiao Yan until he was completely overwhelmed, someone felt an indescribable sense of delight in his heart.

“Bad brother-in-law, you’re not allowed to gloat!”

The other person snorted coldly.

Xiao Heng’s smile stiffened for a moment, and after confirming that Jing Kong had not turned around, he thought to himself: Do you have eyes growing on the back of your head, brat, how did you even notice that?

The group entered the temple to offer incense, and the three little children kowtowed and prayed to the Buddha with surprising seriousness.

Little Ten Xin looked particularly fitting, already dressed in a tiny monk’s robe and wearing a small set of Buddhist beads.

When he bowed down again, anyone who did not know better would have thought he was one of the temple’s young monks.

It was just that this little monk was far too adorable.

“Need… pee.” Little Monk Shi Xin, namely little Xiao Xuan, tugged at his father’s clothes.

Xiao Heng pointed at Xuanyuan Xi. “There, go find your uncle.”

Little Xiao Xuan toddled over and lifted his small head. “Uncle, pee.”

“Bad brother-in-law, you’re way too lazy.” Xuanyuan Xi had long since learned just how lazy his bad brother-in-law was and held no hope at all, so he picked up little Xiao Xuan and carried him off to the latrine.

“I’ll wait for you in the meditation hall.” Xiao Heng called after him.

“Got it!” Xuanyuan Xi pursed his lips in reply.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
