The crisis facing the State of Zhao had been resolved, yet the true turmoil within the imperial court was only just beginning.

The Crown Prince was ignorant and incompetent, obstinate and self-important, and although he possessed a measure of benevolence, he was utterly unfit to shoulder great responsibility, so much so that dissatisfaction toward him had already grown deafening among the common people.

More importantly, even Xiao Ji himself believed that his own nephew was incapable of bearing the weight of the throne.

Xiao Ji did not think that an Emperor needed to be extraordinarily brilliant, but at the very least he could not be excessively foolish, and the Crown Prince was not only foolish but also petty and small-minded in certain matters.

For instance, when he heard that Xiao Ji and Xiao Heng had remained silent in court regarding the memorandums calling for his deposition, he actually went to Empress Xiao to lodge a complaint, accusing the father and son of harboring resentment toward him over the matter of his having taken Wen Linlang for himself.

Who was Wen Linlang?

The father and son had long since forgotten that such a person even existed.

And he still had the nerve to bring her up?

With that pig’s brain of his, if he were to ascend the throne in the future and someone with ulterior motives were to provoke matters even slightly, would Xiao Heng still have any good days left ahead?

Xiao Ji had originally remained silent, yet now he was clearly determined to drag him down from his position outright.

Tang Yueshan was a trusted confidant of Empress Dowager Zhuang, and Empress Dowager Zhuang was the pillar supporting Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng, so even without a single reminder from the Empress Dowager, Tang Yueshan would never speak a word in defense of the Crown Prince.

As for Old Marquis and Old Chief, the Crown Prince need not even think about winning their support.

It was only at this very moment that the Crown Prince finally realized just how laughable the authority he held in his hands truly was.

Beneath the Emperor’s knees there were still three imperial sons.

Rui Wang, the son of Imperial Consort Yu.

Liang Wang, the son of Imperial Concubine Shu.

And the Seventh Prince, Qin Chuyu, who was only sixteen years old and had yet to be enfeoffed as a ‘Wang’.

Rui Wang had handled a great many practical affairs for the court over the years and enjoyed considerable prestige among the common people, and having married the granddaughter of Duke Luo, he could also be said to possess a certain degree of backing.

Imperial Concubine Shu was Old Marquis’s daughter, and on the surface it appeared that behind her and the Liang Wang stood both the Marquis Ding’an Estate and the Gu Family Army, which meant they likewise commanded a measure of support within the court.

As for Qin Chuyu, because of his young age and his reputation as a troublemaker tyrant at the Imperial Academy, his name was not particularly well regarded, and only a few court officials proposed establishing him as Crown Prince.

The Emperor’s head truly ached.

……

Meanwhile, on another front, Xuanyuan Xi returned to the State of Yan and immediately led his troops to attack the State of Liang.

This was an act of revenge for the turmoil that had once erupted in the southwest.

The State of Liang naturally refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing, but whether they admitted it or not hardly mattered at all.

If I want to fight you, why should I care whether you have grievances or not?

The person who came forward to meet him in battle was someone entirely unexpected——his Brother Ming’er.

Ming’er was six years older than Little Jing Kong, and at nineteen this year, he had already come of age.

A few years earlier, the two had exchanged letters, but later, as Xuanyuan Xi traveled frequently to the State of Yan, their correspondence gradually dwindled, and after he joined the army it became impossible to maintain contact at all; who could have imagined that their reunion would take place under such circumstances.

It was just a pity that Ming’er was not Liu Yisheng, and Xuanyuan Xi was not Gu Jiao.

This battle was destined to be unavoidable.

Both sides fought until their eyes were red with blood.

Mounted on horseback, Xuanyuan Xi brought his spear down in a vicious, decisive strike.

Ming’er swung the longsword in his hands and braced himself desperately against Xuanyuan Xi’s red-tasseled spear, blocking it with extreme difficulty, and it was truly hard to imagine that such strength and skill could come from a young boy who was only thirteen years old.

The Black Wind Cavalry were fierce and battle-hardened, and the soldiers of State of Liang around them fell one after another.

Ming’er clenched his teeth and shouted, “Didn’t you promise not to kill my soldiers back then?”

Xuanyuan Xi snorted coldly and replied, “Didn’t you also promise to withdraw your troops thirty li for me?”

Neither of them had kept their word, so neither had the right to mock the other.

In the end, this battle was won by Xuanyuan Xi, Ming’er was knocked off his horse, and Xuanyuan Xi drove his spear forward until its tip pressed against Ming’er’s chest as he shouted, “Men, bind him!”

Ming’er glared at him viciously and snarled, “You might as well just kill me!”

“You’re my Brother Ming’er, how could I bear to kill you?” Xuanyuan Xi said as he leisurely withdrew his spear, lifted a hand to brush away the blood splattered across his cheek, and spoke with a chilling arrogance, “Wouldn’t it be better to use you as leverage against the State of Liang?”

“You!” Ming’er was bound and so furious he was half-dead with anger. “My mother even still worries about you!”

Xuanyuan Xi slung his spear over his shoulder and said casually, “Another day I will personally pay a visit to the Wangfei, so I won’t trouble Brother Ming’er to concern himself.”

Ming’er stamped his foot. “Ah! I’m furious to death!”

Xuan Yuan Xi pressed his attack all the way to the capital of the State of Liang, Bianjing, terrifying the ruler of the State of Liang into trembling like a leaf.

Someone offered a suggestion, proposing that the Emperor of the State of Liang hand over his most beautiful young princess for a political marriage in order to seek peace.

Since ancient times, even the mightiest heroes have found it difficult to resist the allure of beauty.

Who would have thought that Xuanyuan Xi would not even spare the State of Liang’s little princess a single glance, instead looting a massive haul of spoils and returning to his own country.

The second to suffer misfortune was the State of Chen.

When Yuan Tang heard the news, he instantly exploded, shouting, “What did the State of Chen do this time! Why are they attacking me!”

A nearby guard muttered under his breath, “Isn’t it because Your Majesty silently permitted the Wei army to pass through, leaving the borders of the State of Zhao vulnerable… Have you forgotten that? And besides, you also wanted a share of Baoshan Island and even sent a written threat to the ruler of the State of Yan. Have you forgotten that too?”

Yuan Tang’s mouth twitched violently.

Even the formidable military strength of the State of Liang could not withstand Xuanyuan Xi’s campaign, so how could the small State of Chen possibly endure it?

After considering the situation from every angle, Yuan Tang concluded that this mess had been caused by his own cousin.

Without another word, he headed north to Wei, threw himself onto the bed in the residence of Liu Yisheng, sprawled out shamelessly, and said, “I don’t care! I got dragged into this by you! If my country falls and I lose my throne, you’re going to support me!”

Liu Yisheng frowned. “Get off!”

Yuan Tang rolled himself up in the quilt. “I won’t!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
