Hunter of Mysterious Creature

Chapter 150: The Archive Room

Sun Hang returned to the passageway—moving through walls is indeed more convenient, but in the void space "outside the scene," there are no markers; front, back, up, down, left, right, it's all a blank slate. It's fine for a short stay, but moving a long distance in there can easily lead to losing direction, stumbling into some inexplicable places.

With a map in hand, Sun Hang decided it was more prudent to honestly follow the path "within the scene."

The greatest use of the void space is still helping Sun Hang bypass obstacles that are difficult to overcome under normal circumstances.

Sun Hang searched two more rooms and, like before, they were quarters for soldiers stationed on the island. The only difference was that one room appeared to be a female soldier's quarters, with two packages of tampons, whose labels had long faded, at the bottom of the locker.

"A bathroom, three dormitories, fifteen meters ahead is a corner... Such a layout seems to match only the entrance and exit of the number two escape route." Sun Hang compared the scene before him with the architectural blueprint in his memory, "Looks like luck's on my side."

There was no lighting equipment in the passageway, and Sun Hang didn't turn on his flashlight either, yet the entire scene maintained a level of brightness visible to the human eye. The light evenly distributed across every inch of space within sight, leaving Sun Hang unable to locate a specific light source.

Sun Hang still couldn't discern whether this was an illusion or a real scene—but the possibility of it being a dream was mostly ruled out.

Dreamscapes are constructed from existing things in Sun Hang's memory. Although he's seen many photos of the institute's interior, many elements in this scene are not among Sun Hang's "resource pool."

Dreams may feature monsters stitched from various memory fragments, but won't include things Sun Hang has never seen or imagined.

...

Finally, a thick iron door appeared in Sun Hang's view, labeled in two national languages as "Archive Room No. 6."

The door lock was a precise and nerve-wracking code lock, with explosives installed inside according to information from the Dubhe Tower. If the code is entered incorrectly or someone attempts to forcibly open the lock, the explosives would detonate, permanently sealing the door.

Subsequently, a fuse embedded in the door would be ignited, extending into the file cabinet storing documents... Within five minutes, the entire cabinet of files would be consumed in flames.

Before setting out, researchers from the Dubhe Tower repeatedly cautioned the Hunters not to open the archive room door with force—unless they first resolve the explosive and fuse problem.

But for Sun Hang, this issue was no issue at all.

He easily passed through the iron door and entered the interior of the archive room.

The space inside the archive room was not much larger than the soldiers' quarters, with a dozen heavy metal file cabinets neatly against the wall—originally each file cabinet would have a label with document classifications, but due to age, the ink on these labels had severely oxidized, making the original content indistinguishable.

Sun Hang didn't think much of it, directly approaching a file cabinet opposite the entrance, closing his eyes and reaching inside.

His arm passed through the cabinet door with no obstruction, pulling out a fairly hefty manila envelope.

"Confidential Archive, Number 090315." Sun Hang read out the number written on the outside of the envelope, "I just wonder if I memorize the contents of these archives and relay it to those at the Dubhe Tower, will they believe me?"

"Forget it, whether they believe it or not doesn't matter. As long as I can obtain the Rank Hunter qualification, Rank One and Rank Five make little difference to me." The most attractive aspect of Rank Hunter for Sun Hang isn't the generous benefits, but the ability to act autonomously without being bound by the Xiazhou Federation's privileges.

If ordinary registered Hunters are subordinate to the Xiazhou Federation, then the relationship between Rank Hunters and the Xiazhou Federation is more akin to cooperation.

In terms of discourse, they are equal... though it's only superficially equal, it's still much better compared to a slave contract.

Sun Hang cautiously unraveled the thread wrapped around the archive envelope, yet before he opened the envelope, a sudden stream of electricity flashed through his mind.

It was as if something in his mind had been unlocked, and he suddenly felt an incredibly familiar sensation from this archive room.

Not just this archive room, the entire Nameless Island Research Institute felt incredibly familiar to Sun Hang!

As if he… had lived here for a long period!

Sun Hang was instantly shaken, goosebumps appeared on his back... He suddenly realized that the scene he was in was indeed a dreamscape, built from "resources" within his memory.

Those memories were ones he had lost… or rather, had been stored deep within his brain!

Could it be... before losing his memory, did he once stay at this research institute?

No... this research institute was decommissioned over a hundred years ago; during that time, I probably wasn't even born, right?

The Celestial City Mysterious Creature Research Institute had measured Sun Hang's bone age, concluding his actual age should be between twenty-five to twenty-seven years old, with all body indicators, including metabolic rate, completely normal… meaning it essentially ruled out the possibility of him being an old monster living for over a century.

But why… does he have memories of this research institute?

Could it be that a mysterious creature once imprisoned here escaped, only to be devoured by the Taotie upon escape, and during its infection of Sun Hang, fragmented these memories and "transmitted" them to him?

To the point of making him mistakenly believe they were his own memories?

Sun Hang took a deep breath; he decided to not think about those matters first. The urgent task is still to read through all these archives... After all, he doesn't know when this dreamscape will abruptly cease.

Sun Hang extracted a stack of yellowing papers from the archive, and the large characters on the first page of the document suddenly came into view.

"Yellow Calendar 4603, First Original-Level Mysterious Creature Direct Contact Experiment Report."

Original-Level Mysterious Creature? Direct contact experiment? Report?

These three terms separately seem unremarkable, but combined, they bring a shock to Sun Hang's mind comparable to an eight-magnitude earthquake.

Isn't it said that no one in the Xiazhou Federation has witnessed an original-level mysterious creature?

Except for the decayed mother tree in the Amazon Basin, all original-level mysterious creatures exist purely in theory… so what's with this experiment report?

Was the experiment conducted within the Xiazhou Federation territory?
