Hunter of Mysterious Creature

Chapter 246: The People of Theseus

At Yang Qi's request, Sun Hang followed the standard procedure for disinfection three times before changing into sterile surgical attire and was then allowed to enter the operating room.

A group of researchers were already in place, with Song Yarong, her silver-gray high ponytail twisted into a bun, sitting in front of the computer, rapidly typing on the keyboard—while her prosthetic eye was embedded in a recess of the shadowless lamp directly above the operating table, intently watching the "patient" on the table.

Lying on the operating table surrounded by numerous devices was a woman, emaciated and skeletal. Her complexion and lips were pale, devoid of any blood color, and a transparent hair cap covered her sparse hair—a small dose of maintenance chemotherapy also causes damage to hair follicle cells, not to mention she had long been in a state of malnutrition.

"The patient has already undergone general anesthesia," said a man in a white coat whom Sun Hang did not know, turning around to speak to Yang Qi, his gaze lingering on Sun Hang for a moment before continuing, "If this were at the hospital where I work, I would never have administered such anesthesia... the patient's physical condition is too poor. Even if the surgery is successful, it's difficult for the patient to wake up again."

"Don't worry, what we're going to do isn't an ordinary surgery." Yang Qi nodded, looking at Sun Hang, "Sun Hang, it's up to you now."

"Understood." Sun Hang removed his gloves and squeezed some disinfectant gel from a bottle nearby, quickly rubbing it all over his hands.

He couldn't help but remark inwardly that following the procedure to put on gloves earlier was completely unnecessary.

"Sun Hang." The only other person Sun Hang recognized in the operating room, Song Yarong, stood up and handed a few scans to Sun Hang. "These are Jiang Yu's CT images. Besides the lungs, there are multiple suspicious shadows in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and stomach; in addition, lesions have been detected in the sternum and ribs..."

"I can't understand this stuff." Sun Hang shrugged helplessly, "You know I'm not medically trained."

"Give me the scans." Yang Qi snatched the scans, pulled out a pen, and drew a bunch of red circles on them. "These circled areas are all the metastasized lesions."

"So what I need to do is replace all these cancerous parts with Taisui tissue?"

"Theoretically, yes," Song Yarong nodded, "but how you actually do it is up to you."

"To be honest, I can't tell the difference between cancer cells and normal cells... With so many parts needing replacement, why don't I just go ahead and replace every part of her except the brain?" Sun Hang said.

"No, we can only replace her body tissue to the minimum extent necessary... If the entire body is replaced, she would definitely be unable to retain her original consciousness. At that point, what comes off the operating table wouldn't be an infected patient, but a humanoid monstrosity," said Yang Qi.

"Then how did you replace my lungs before?" Song Yarong couldn't help but ask.

"Come on, you had such a big bullet hole in your lung lobe, plus all the clotted blood blocking the vessels... it was obvious," Sun Hang replied helplessly. "But with cancer, I can't guarantee it can be completely removed. If any lesion is left behind, it'll probably relapse shortly after."

Song Yarong: "..."

"However, we could try to see if Taisui tissue has any anticancer properties... I think if it's not removed completely, it shouldn't be a problem," Sun Hang added.

"What if the cancer cells mix with the Taisui tissue?" Yang Qi glanced at him, "Are you sure you won't create a monster?"

"There's another way, which is for you to cut while I transplant new organs for her," Sun Hang said. "Replace whatever's missing."

A few people, possibly doctors or researchers, exchanged glances, and one of them nodded, saying, "I think we can do that."

"Then let's do it. Time is of the essence; let's start now."

All preparations for the surgery, including parts of a conventional removal procedure, had been made beforehand.

A lead surgeon held a scalpel and made an incision starting from Jiang Yu's back, along the ribs, while another assisting doctor immediately used a tube to suction off the blood seeping from the incision.

Several hooks pulled the skin apart, exposing the internal organs to everyone present.

"Tsk." The lead surgeon frowned, "It's worse than I expected... besides the lungs, the entire bronchus needs to be removed, and less than a third of the liver can be preserved..."

He quickly glanced up at Sun Hang and said, "We're probably going to need to carve up her organs almost entirely; are you sure you can make up for them all?"

"I should be able to." Several mycelium tendrils extended from Sun Hang's palm, with their tips beginning to divide and grow... a few seconds later, a pair of lung lobes appeared as if hanging like fruit on the ends of these tendrils.

Even though they were mentally prepared, upon seeing Sun Hang conjure up the lung lobes like magic, a strong look of astonishment flashed across the eyes of the lead surgeon, who murmured, "The abilities of the infected are truly... miraculous."

"By the way, won't using the infected person's abilities to create human organs lead to rejection reactions?" another assisting researcher inquired.

"I've never experienced rejection," Song Yarong immediately chimed in with personal testimony, "though I wonder if I'm an exception."

"Enough chatting, let's get on with it." The lead surgeon switched to another blade, taking a deep breath, "Whether or not rejection occurs is a postoperative issue; just make sure you're prepared for it, and it'll be fine."
