Abyss Sequence

Chapter 26: The Three Items in the Safe

The motorcycle raced across the vast plains, and in Yan Luo's eyes, there were no demons, only the entrance to Crimson No. 3 fifty kilometers away.

As he approached the entrance to Crimson No. 3, there were more Hunters around, and he frequently encountered teams engaged in hunting.

Among the three exploration towns connected to the Crimson Abyss, Crimson No. 3 was the most prosperous and powerful, with nearly eight thousand Hunters and a Second Rank expert stationed there.

This was because the entrance was not only situated on the Bone-Eroding Plain but also quite close to the Crescent Mountain Range.

Starting from Crimson No. 3 can save a lot of travel distance.

Therefore, most large battle groups that depend on the Crimson Abyss for making money are located at Crimson No. 3.

Compared to the relatively closed Crimson No. 2 and Crimson No. 1, Crimson No. 3 has many outsiders, so Yan Luo, even if he entered, would not be treated as hostile as long as he didn't cause trouble.

After spending two days, Yan Luo finally connected to the signal sent out by the signal tower while crossing half of the Crimson Abyss. Guided by the signal tower, he quickly found the entrance to Crimson No. 3.

Passing through the space membrane, Yan Luo arrived at the peninsula in the northwest corner of the northern region.

The weather was unkind, with a cold wind mixed with drizzle blowing into the checkpoint, and the stationed soldiers stood by the inspection machine looking aloof.

Yan Luo drove his motorcycle over for inspection.

The stationed soldier rummaged through his luggage box, opened the space box and took a glance, then frowned, "Why is there nothing here?"

He spoke in a language Yan Luo didn't understand, but fortunately, his personal terminal had a translation function. After the translation, Yan Luo finally understood what he said.

"Because I came to the northern region for something, I didn't hunt demons in the Abyss."

Upon hearing Yan Luo's words, the stationed soldier realized he belonged to the Crimson No. 2 Hunter.

"Yan Luo? I seem to have heard that name somewhere..."

After muttering, thinking that Yan Luo was from the Crimson No. 2 Hunter, the soldier grinned and patted Yan Luo's motorcycle, "Although you haven't hunted in the Abyss, according to the rule, you need to pay a toll of ten thousand."

Yan Luo glared at the soldier, "Crimson No. 3 doesn't have this rule."

"How could it not? It's just not a surface-level rule, but everyone knows it!" the soldier shouted loudly.

Yan Luo turned his head to look at the other Hunters preparing to leave the checkpoint. Noticing Yan Luo's gaze, they stopped, showing no intention of entering the inspection machine.

Seeing their actions, Yan Luo realized the soldier was bluffing.

Bam!

Yan Luo suddenly punched the soldier's stomach, making him vomit his lunch, then leisurely rode his motorcycle away from the checkpoint.

Behind him burst a wave of laughter—both Hunters and soldiers mocked the soldier who attempted to extort Yan Luo but ended up embarrassing himself.

Although Hunters don't have extrajudicial privileges, if a conflict arises involving a Hunter, and the Hunter is not at fault, even if the person in conflict with the Hunter gets beaten, the Hunter isn't considered breaking the law.

This is some of the privilege granted due to their extraordinary power.

However, if a Hunter injures someone, they still have to compensate financially.

Yan Luo didn't linger at Crimson No. 3 for long, didn't even resupply, and drove straight into the wilderness.

When previously searching coordinates, Yan Luo had memorized the location of Wen Chongwu's hidden items, so just by opening the map, he could know the target's direction without having to make special marks on the map.

Undoubtedly, the message sender who knew about his childhood games with his parents was Wen Chongwu, no one else.

The items Wen Chongwu hid were valued by the Abyssal Believers, and since they couldn't find those items, they had to rely on him.

Yan Luo had already figured it out. Unless something unexpected happened, the Abyssal Believers weren't planning to kill him, at least not until he found the items for them.

What exactly did Wen Chongwu hide to make the Abyssal Believers value it so highly?

With this doubt, Yan Luo rode his motorcycle across the wilderness, occasionally opening his map to check and adjust his direction.

Traveling eastward over a hundred kilometers from Crimson No. 3 could lead him to the hidden items of Wen Chongwu.

This wasn't difficult for Yan Luo.

Along the way, Yan Luo encountered some mutated creatures that were no match for him; he would shoo them away or, if needed, stop and kill them.

After some hustling, Yan Luo finally reached the target location.

However, despite reaching the coordinate-indicated spot, he looked around the barren hill, and no matter where he looked, it didn't seem like a place where one could hide things.

Yan Luo took out the optical camouflage generator from the space box and attached a power amplifier, placing the optical camouflage generator on the ground, generating an optical camouflage with a thirty-meter radius.

Electromagnetic signals are severely affected by Magic Power, so the ground can only be observed using optical instruments from outer space, which are vulnerable to optical camouflage.

The Abyssal Believers have substantial power, and Yan Luo wasn't sure if they could acquire partial control of some satellites, or at least monitoring sharing rights—so he prepared an optical camouflage generator and power amplifier while at Crimson No. 2.

If observation from outer space was unavailable, the Abyssal Believers would likely deploy ground forces.

Yan Luo believed there were also Abyssal Believers inside Crimson No. 3.

Because not all subordinates of the Abyssal Believers are necessarily part of the Abyssal Believers; they might just be hired and might not even know what their bosses are up to.

Being on top of a hill, Yan Luo was at an advantageous vantage point to observe movement in all directions, so he confirmed no one followed him out of Crimson No. 3. Thus, if the Abyssal Believers did deploy ground forces, it would take them some time to reach his current location.

During this time, Yan Luo could confidently search for what Wen Chongwu left behind.

Looking at the map and then at the surrounding landscape, Yan Luo didn't immediately start searching, thinking Wen Chongwu would have left clues given how well he hid it.

Taking a closer look at the map, Yan Luo suddenly realized.

His current location was right between Crimson No. 3 and a city. If Wen Chongwu's fake coordinates were taken as the x and y coordinates, and the line segment connecting Crimson No. 3 and that city as the base, two locations could be determined.

Realizing the answer to the puzzle, Yan Luo immediately started digging.

Luck was on his side as he unearthed a safe at the first location.

The safe wasn't big, looking unlikely to hide large items.

A password was needed to open the safe, but where would the password come from?

Yan Luo stared at the safe and suddenly had an epiphany, entering the numbers '1213'.

Click!

The safe indeed opened.

Logically, Wen Chongwu had no need to write the year at the end of the two letters, yet he did, without mentioning dates. The safe's password being four digits made it easy to deduce this answer.

Wen Chongwu left three items for Yan Luo, the first being a list containing names of people Wen Chongwu either confirmed or strongly suspected were Abyssal Believers.

The list began with 'Zheng Guoxian,' the predecessor of Daoist Li, the head of the Scarlet No. 2 Hunter's Guild.

The second item was another list, but this one included names of individuals within the United Government willing to assist Wen Chongwu, people who were likely trustworthy.

The third item was intriguing, a metal plate with carvings.

The carvings appeared to tell a story—

A tower on a high mountain collapsed, its inhabitants scattered as a flood rose.

To calm the flood, a human stood up to repair... the moon?

The story ended there. Yan Luo couldn't decipher what story the carvings told or why Wen Chongwu placed this metal plate alongside the two lists in the safe.

It seemed to be a myth, with echoes of the Tower of Babel's collapse and a world-ending flood, while the ending was reminiscent of Nuwa, except instead of patching the sky, the human patched the moon.

Stopping a flood by fixing the moon?
