Abyss Sequence

Chapter 60: And So I Saw—

Yan Luo's abyssal hunting this time had reached the eleventh day. He suddenly felt a bit bored, so he turned the vehicle around and drove toward the Abyss Entrance.

During this abyssal hunt, Yan Luo killed three City-breaking Level Demons and countless numbers of lower-level demons, enough to drop the prices of demon meat even further.

On Blue Star, besides Yan Luo, no one could digest the meat of City-breaking Level Demons, so Yan Luo was quite troubled, unable to sell off the City-breaking Level demon meat he had accumulated.

This time, Yan Luo didn't go far during the abyssal hunt, and within just five hours, he returned to Fortress One.

While sorting through his spoils, Yan Luo found a crystal tucked into a corner, reminding him of the Special City-breaking Level Demon he had killed earlier.

So, at Fortress One, he bought a Magic Crystal and placed it onto the crystal, but nothing happened.

This left Yan Luo quite bewildered.

What exactly was this crystal? Although it was something dropped after a demon's death, why couldn't it be activated with Magic Power?

After pondering for a while, Yan Luo sought out the experts stationed at Fortress One who specialized in the abyss, hoping they could help decipher what this crystal truly was.

Yan Luo personally visited, and naturally, the experts treated him warmly.

However, their attitude was overly enthusiastic, making Yan Luo feel like he saw the same look as when he first met Sasa, who wanted to figure out his unusual constitution as if they wished to dissect him completely to see what was inside him and why his body was so special.

Frowning slightly, Yan Luo said, "Don't look at me with those eyes; it's very disrespectful."

Though it sounded somewhat rude, it was actually the experts who were truly disrespectful.

Upon hearing this, the experts guiltily redirected their gaze from Yan Luo back to the crystal he presented.

When they learned that this crystal was material dropped after the death of a City-breaking Level Demon in the Forbidden Demon Abyss, their expressions froze, then became extremely excited.

Any abnormality is worthy of research. Forbidden Demon Abyss demons had only ever dropped bone plates and meat chunks; this crystal Yan Luo was holding was something they had never seen before.

The experts took the crystal for various tests, arriving at the following result—

The crystal exhibited a magic power response but could not be activated by a Magic Crystal. Even if an Engraver with an Engraving involving "conduction" injected Magic Power into it, the crystal wouldn't interact with the Magic Power.

This was quite puzzling since, during the magic power response tests, they used very professional equipment with precise operations, ensuring no magic power interference had occurred.

Therefore, logically, the test results should be accurate—indicating that the crystal had a magic power response, unaffected by environmental interference.

To resolve this issue, the experts conducted two more retests, which yielded the same results.

The crystal indeed exhibited a magic power response, yet didn't react to external Magic Power.

Given this, what was the purpose of this crystal?

The experts, encountering the situation for the first time, had to leave the Forbidden Demon Abyss and seek assistance from colleagues via the internet.

Those whom these experts turned to for help were naturally also experts; however, even they had no solutions.

At this point, someone remembered the issue with the amplification gemstones and suggested that Yan Luo pour some blood onto the crystal.

Originally, Li Jiongming had no clue about the amplification gemstones until Yan Luo's blood was poured on them, revealing the gemstone's true function.

Perhaps, this crystal was similar?

It wouldn't hurt to try since it didn't cost anything.

Yan Luo directly sliced open his blood vessel, extracted blood, and poured it onto the crystal.

Then, he saw—

A beam of light shot down from beyond the heavens, crashing onto the earth, startling the residents living around the impact site. These intelligent life forms, equipped with hands and feet, had brains larger than those of Blue Star People and began discussing the phenomenon.

Soon, they dispatched a few young adults, who rode gangly beasts similar to terror claw dragons, racing toward the impact site.

The gaze from the heavens followed those young adults' figures, watching them sprint swiftly across the vast grassland.

The otherworldly object smashed into the ground creating a large pit, even igniting a patch of grass, turning the earth surrounding the deep pit into scorched wasteland.

Upon reaching the deep pit, the Sub-dragon refused to advance further, forcing the young adults to leave one companion to guard the beasts while the rest continued to investigate.

Four young adults crossed over the blackened earth, reached the edge of the pit, and gazed downwards.

In the pit lay a black object still emitting steam.

Unsure of what it was, they debated without reaching a conclusion, then took out the ropes they carried, braiding a long rope, sending two down to retrieve the object from the pit.

When they reached the pit's bottom, one youth removed his jacket, gathered the surrounding soil along with the otherworldly object, packed it up, tied the bundle with the rope, and had those atop the pit pull it up.

After extricating the object from the pit's bottom, the two who descended gradually exited the pit, rejoining their companion guarding the beasts, and returned to the settlement together.

The five young adults brought the otherworldly object back to the settlement, immediately receiving a warm welcome. People praised their bravery with bonfires and dancing.

Afterward, the black, egg-shaped object was placed on the altar, becoming a sacred relic of the settlement.

Perhaps due to the object's radiance, over time, the residents' skin began to harden, their keratin layers thickening.

They were somewhat fearful of this, but the Priest who consecrated the object on the altar explained that this was the divine power bestowed upon them by the sacred relic, enabling safer hunting and herding.

With the Priest's explanation, the people calmed down, feeling proud and boastful of their bodily transformations.

They began to compete, comparing who had undergone larger changes, and who had received more divine blessing.

The skin changes continued, with some even developing bone plates.

This natural armor provided them a significant advantage in hunting and warfare against other tribes.

In no time, this tribe's power grew overwhelmingly strong, successfully seizing territories from multiple tribes and enslaving those tribes' people.

The region's other tribes feared this tribe's might, so they united, collaborating with slaves within the tribe to exterminate the first tribe that discovered the 'sacred relic.'

Upon discovering the presence of the 'sacred relic,' rival tribes immediately turned hostile, triggering a grand war over the relic.

During this war, people discovered that dripping their enemies' blood on themselves accelerated bone plate growth, resulting in a bloodbath.

Whether enemies, livestock within the tribe, or any source of blood, pouring it onto oneself would enhance bone plate growth.

In this primitive and backward era, those with more armor held the advantage.

They drenched themselves in the blood of slaves, drenching in livestock blood, enemy blood, and some tribes, facing defeat, even turned their blades against their own kin, reversing the course of battles.

Initially, they would tearfully sacrifice kin willing to offer themselves, but later, no one remembered why they turned their blades against kin, only that this tactic offered a last resort.

War expanded, engulfing more tribes.

No one noticed that the radiance of the sacred relic—formerly exclusive to one tribe—had now enveloped the entire world, allowing everyone to grow stronger by killing.

Nor did anyone recognize that besides humans, beasts too began growing bone plates.

With war prolonged, no one remembered why it started or why these transformations occurred.

Blood, from those shrouded in bone plates, dripped onto the earth, slowly eroding the land, causing vegetation to wilt, rivers to run dry, and lakes to evaporate.

Initially, the war was about survival, later about desire, and ultimately about seizing the last remaining clean land and water sources in the world, reverting to a war for survival.

They fell into a cycle, spinning in a vortex, unable to escape!
