"I'll be grateful to that Devil? Impossible!" Harriet roared inwardly, "Because of him, they actually want me to return to the Holy City? All my painstaking cultivation—wasn't it just to shine in front of Her Holiness the Saintess? Go back? That's out of the question!"
Archbishop Berkeley was indeed formidable, but he had dedicated his life entirely to the Church, completely oblivious to how powerful emotions between men and women could be—or how much fury they could incite!
Of course, he never imagined that Harriet, who had never once defied him, might disobey his orders!
"Saint Di Anfu." Ling Feng looked at the Bright Saintess, who was following him closely, and asked with some perplexity, "Are you just a mascot in the Church? Or are you really that free?"
Saint Di Anfu almost flared her nostrils in anger. Mascot? Free? She was clearly overwhelmed with responsibilities—how could he say that?
"What do you mean by that?" A dangerous glint flashed in Saint Di Anfu's eyes. "Are you mocking me?"
Ling Feng shrugged and said, "Of course… not! I'm just confused. Why are you always following me? Could it be…"
At this point, Ling Feng clasped his collar and, with a hint of alarm in his voice, said, "Could it be… you've fallen for me? Planning to corner me in a secluded spot and do something unspeakable?"
Saint Di Anfu's eyes nearly blazed with fire. She gritted her teeth and said, "Rest assured, I have absolutely no interest in men like you—not even a shred! So, knock off those disgusting delusions!"
To Ling Feng's surprise, he actually sighed in relief upon hearing this, patting his chest as he said, "That's great, that's great. You almost scared me to death. Remember, you're God's representative—you mustn't fall for me, understand?"
The Bright Saintess glared fiercely at Ling Feng. If not for the fact that she couldn't beat him in a fight, she would've sliced him into pieces by now!
She was the Bright Saintess, an untouchable divine figure in the hearts of countless believers! Yet here she was, being taunted endlessly by Ling Feng—she was utterly livid!
What frustrated her even more was that Ling Feng seemed to find any association with her to be a tormenting ordeal! She was clearly a stunning beauty, wasn't she? His attitude was downright insulting!
What Saint Di Anfu failed to notice was how, whenever she encountered Ling Feng, her usually calm and steady heart would churn like waves crashing in a storm.
"You're not seriously planning to keep following me, are you?" After walking for a while, Ling Feng asked in surprise, "You've escorted me far enough. I'll just wander around from here!"
Saint Di Anfu shook her head and said, "During your stay in Paris, I will be with you the whole time!"
Ling Feng looked utterly shocked. "Hey, I was joking earlier—don't tell me you've really fallen for me? Thinking about running away with me? That won't do! The Bright Church's influence is way too powerful. Even if we escaped to Huaxia, we wouldn't stand a chance against your Church's pursuers!"
Saint Di Anfu stared at him, dumbfounded. Was this guy's brain hardwired to think about such nonsense?
"What should we do then? Maybe we should flee to the City of Darkness controlled by the Dark Church. Once we've… ahem, 'sealed the deal,' your Church would have to acknowledge our relationship, no?" Ling Feng continued bombarding Saint Di Anfu's thoughts.
"Stop! Stop right there!" Saint Di Anfu couldn't take it anymore and shouted, "Ling Feng, how did I never realize before what kind of person you are? Your delusions are out of control! Do you seriously think I'm like one of those women who pine for you… ugh, no way! There's no way I'd like you or elope with you!"
"Then why are you following me?" Ling Feng asked, genuinely puzzled.
Saint Di Anfu replied gloomily, "Obviously because we need to coordinate on how to leverage the Freedom Organization to retrieve the map! While our Church may assist you from the shadows, you still need to cooperate with our actions. Do you really think I'd be following you out of boredom?"
Finally understanding, Ling Feng said, "Oh, so that's what it's about. Well, that's easy. Just take down my phone number, and we'll coordinate via phone. You can head back now."
Saint Di Anfu simply stared at Ling Feng. Though they had formed a verbal alliance, she was acutely aware that if Ling Feng got reckless and blurted something out, it could jeopardize the Bright Church's entire plan, effectively backfiring on them!
That was why someone from the Bright Church had to stay by Ling Feng's side—to ensure real-time communication and cooperation!
This was precisely why Saint Di Anfu had taken it upon herself to follow him. Anyone else probably would've been ditched by him long ago.
"Alright, alright," Ling Feng said, exasperated by Saint Di Anfu's resentful gaze. "I get it. You can stay by my side. Geez, it's like you don't trust me at all. So hurtful!"
Saint Di Anfu couldn't care less whether Ling Feng's feelings were hurt. Besides, knowing how thick-skinned Ling Feng was, he likely didn't think much of it anyway.
In this regard, she had to admit she understood Ling Feng surprisingly well.
"By the way, there's something I haven't figured out," Ling Feng said, looking at Saint Di Anfu. "How did you know I was in Paris, and specifically on the Champs-Élysées? Also, I'm not the only potential ally, right?"
From the Bright Church's plan, it was clearly a calculated, premeditated operation. Surely, they had more than one candidate to collaborate with!
But why was he the one they chose? Ling Feng didn't believe they'd pinpointed his location from the start—after all, he'd emerged through the teleportation array in the Egyptian Pyramids!
Saint Di Anfu nodded and said, "You're correct. We had three potential allies. But two of them declined to cooperate after learning about our plan, and the other was ambushed along the way—completely annihilated!"
Ling Feng's eyes widened. "What?! Someone actually rejected partnership with the Bright Church? They must have a death wish!"
Saint Di Anfu frowned slightly. "Ling Feng, watch what you say! The Bright Church would never engage in underhanded schemes. We always…"
"Act on principles of voluntariness, goodwill, and moral persuasion, right?" Ling Feng interrupted irritably. "I don't care about them—I'm more interested in knowing who orchestrated that annihilation!"
