我喜欢这个男生…他的笑容太好看了."
("I like this guy… his smile is too beautiful.")
Dayo finally looked up slowly… and responded in Chinese:
"真的吗?你喜欢我?"
("Really? You like me?")
All three ladies froze.
Evan almost fell off his seat.
The ladies leaned forward at the same time, eyes wide, cheeks burning red.
"你会说中文?!"
("You can speak Chinese?!")
Their shocked faces said everything Evan speechless, and Dayo smiling like he didn't just flip the entire table with one sentence.
The girls exchanged quick glances, cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
Lian covered her face. "Oh my God, you understood everything we said?"
Dayo tilted his head just a bit, teasing. "Maybe… or maybe I only understood the last part."
Mei's face turned bright red. Suyin nudged her under the table while fighting a grin.
Evan whispered sharply, "Bro… BRO… why didn't you tell me you speak Chinese?!"
Dayo shrugged. "You never asked."
The girls laughed softly at that—his delivery was smooth without trying.
To break the tension, Dayo leaned slightly forward and spoke gently.
"Sorry if I startled you. It's just… I couldn't help but let you all act like I don't understand to get to know you all."
Lian and her friends blushed that they were caught red handed complimenting them.
"Ah Dayo you're so naughty."
Dayo wmriked and replied. " Oh I could be more than that if you want me to."
Suyin blinked, surprised. "Ah… you're smooth."
Lian let out a small laugh. "No wonder she likes you," she teased, nudging suyin.
Suyin hid her face behind her hair. "Stop it…"
Mei the shy one out of all of them held her mouth as she laughed.
Evan seeing this felt hot on his face as he looked at her.
Mei sensing his gaze quiclky dodge.
Before they could continue, a man suddenly approached the table.
He looked nervous, holding his phone.
"Um… excuse me… are you JD?"
Dayo smiled politely. "Yes, I am."
"Oh my God, I knew it," the guy said, bouncing slightly. "Please, can I get a selfie? I love your music."
"Sure," Dayo said.
The man took a picture, got an autograph, and left happily.
The girls stared at Dayo in surprise.
Lian leaned forward. "Wait… JD? As in JD, the American singer?"
Dayo nodded. "Yeah."
Suyin gasped. "You're the one who sang say something with Luna ?
Dayo smiled. "Yes."
"I LOVE that song!" Suyin exclaimed. "I didn't even know what you looked like in real life!"
Mei peeked up shyly. "I listen to your album almost every day…"
Evan raised his hand proudly. "Yes, yes—he's an artist, he's a swimmer, he's everything. Please, form a line."
They all laughed.
"Why did you stop releasing songs?" Lian asked.
Dayo answered casually, "I took a break after the last album. Needed time to breathe."
"But you're back now?" Suyin asked.
"Slowly," Dayo replied.
Conversation flowed easily after that.
They talked about Paris, about their sports, their training, and discovered that:
Lian was a gymnast representing China.
Suyin was a track athlete.
Mei—the shy one—was a 50m freestyle swimmer, same category as Evan.
Evan raised his hands in shock. "Wait—YOU swim the same event as me?"
Mei nodded shyly. "Yes…"
"Bro, look at that," Evan said, nudging Dayo. "Maybe destiny."
Suyin rolled her eyes dramatically. "Please. Focus on the Olympics."
Then Evan—feeling confident for once—leaned back while still looking at Mei.
"Speaking of swimming… do you all know Dayo is competing in three events?"
They froze instantly.
"Three?"
"That's impossible."
"No one does that in freestyle."
Evan grinned. "Oh, it's possible. My guy here is something else. He's doing 50m, 100m, and 200m."
Suyin stared. "How?"
Dayo shrugged softly. "I just try my best."
"Try?" Lian said. "That's not 'try.' That's insane."
Suyin whispered, "No wonder he looked so fast today…"
They kept talking—light teasing, laughter, and harmless compliments.
By the time the evening settled, the group felt like they'd known each other for a long while.
Everyone exchanged numbers.
Lian typed quickly. "If you boys are free after the finals, we should hang out again."
"Definitely," Evan said immediately.
Suyin handed her phone to Dayo quietly. "Here…"
Dayo typed his number in and gave it back gently. "Message me anytime."
Suyin nearly melted.
Meanwhile Mei and Evan were at the having a cozy conversations and also exchange numbers.
Soon, the girls stood to leave.
Suyin waved. "Good luck in the finals!"
Lian added, "And don't shock us again with your Chinese, please."
Mei gave a tiny wave only Evan saw. "Bye…"
When they were gone, Evan grabbed Dayo's shoulder.
"BRO. You are TOO smooth. TOO smooth. Why didn't you tell me you speak Chinese?"
Dayo laughed. "You didn't ask."
"No wonder she likes you," Evan muttered dramatically. "Some people are just born blessed."
Dayo just smiled.
Dayo then remember. "Oi don't forget your taking me on a trio to any country in Europe of my choosing."
Evan appeared shocked and started walking fast like he was trying avoid Dayo.
And Dayo was having no of it.
They chased it each other until Evan finally accepted to take him on a trio.
They walked back to their hotel, still joking about the entire encounter.
At the entrance, they fist-bumped before going to their separate rooms.
***
When Dayo walked into his room… his phone started ringing.
Mom
Dad
Jeffrey
Janet
All on video call.
Dayo sat on the bed, smiling. "Hey everyone."
Janet waved aggressively. "Brother!! Are you okay? Did you eat?"
Jeffrey added, "You look tired. Don't stress too much."
His mother smiled warmly. "We just wanted to hear your voice, dear."
His father nodded proudly. "You're doing well, son. Don't worry too much."
"I'm fine," Dayo reassured them. "Really. Just tired from training. Are you all coming to Paris?"
They all exchanged quick glances.
His father answered smoothly, "No, no. We'll just watch from home. You focus on competing."
"Alright," Dayo said, slightly disappointed but still smiling.
They talked for a few more minutes before ending the call.
---
But the moment the call ended…
Janet whispered excitedly, "We're still going, right?"
Jeffrey nodded. "YES."
Their mother grinned. "We leave tomorrow."
Their father smirked. "He won't see it coming."
They were all excited.
It was decided.
They would fly to Paris—
but they wouldn't tell Dayo.
They wanted the surprise to be perfect.
