It was already too late to dodge. All she could do was pray.
"Watch out!"
"We're going to crash!"
Big Wave involuntarily gripped the handle, a rare look of horror appearing in her beautiful eyes.
If I had known it would be like this, I wouldn't have used a ride-hailing app. Reinforcements may have been delayed, but I could have held my own against the enemy. Now, we're both going to die in a wreck.
But in the next moment, she witnessed a display of flawless, fluid maneuvering.
In the blink of an eye, Xia Liang yanked the steering wheel, his right foot simultaneously slamming the accelerator and the brake while he pulled up the handbrake. Just a moment before rear-ending the car ahead, he executed a serpentine swerve, overtaking from the outer lane. The extreme drift pressed Big Wave's delicate body tightly against the car door. The BMW scraped past the median of the right lane by a razor-thin margin before threading the needle between two sedans that were making a turn.
Through the window, she could clearly see the horrified expressions of the other drivers.
"Holy shit!" a bald man in a convertible yelled. He had been chatting with a girl, but when the BMW flashed past like lightning, he was so startled he nearly threw her from the car. The prominent ride-hailing logo on the BMW was particularly shocking.
"Is that really a BMW?"
"Is that really a ride-hailing car?"
"Am I too naive, or has the world gone insane?"
The surrounding crowd was equally stunned by the top-tier driving. A few people with nothing better to do wanted to give chase and test their skills, not believing an old BMW could reach such an incredible speed. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't even see its taillights.
"Where did you get this BMW?" Big Wave's tone had lost its previous distance, a clear sign that she had been won over by his phenomenal driving. "When this is over, I'm getting one too."
"It's a BMW A8," Xia Liang replied.
"A BMW A8? I thought BMW only had the 8 Series or the i8. When did this model come out? It's so fast! Judging by the sound, the engine must have at least two thousand horsepower."
The System gave it to me, how the hell would I know? Xia Liang rolled his eyes internally. Of course, he couldn't say that out loud.
"I modified it a tiny bit. Hold on tight, I'm about to speed up."
Big Wave reflexively gripped the armrest, a look of utter misery on her face.
You mean you weren't even speeding up before?
At that moment, the speedometer read 200 KM/H... and showed no signs of stopping.

「Two minutes later.」
At a busy intersection, a traffic cop was taking advantage of a lull to have a sip of water.
KSHHH—
His radio crackled to life. "A black, older model BMW is speeding toward Victory Avenue! The film festival is being held on Victory Avenue! Could they be heading there to cause trouble? All units along the route, set up a blockade! Reinforcements are on the way!"
The officer's brain was still trying to catch up when a black BMW blew through the red light like a gale of wind. As it shot past, he could have sworn the driver smiled and waved at him.
"PFFT—"
The water he hadn't yet swallowed sprayed out of his mouth. He hastily grabbed his radio.
"Headquarters, Headquarters! The black BMW just passed the signal at the end of Changbai Road!"
A voice crackled back, "What's its speed? Headquarters needs to know where to set up the roadblock."
The officer nearly crushed the radio in his hand as he yelled, "Visual estimate is 210! I repeat, visual estimate is 210! The driver of the black BMW is extremely arrogant! He's even taunting law enforcement!"
The scenery outside the window began to blur. Big Wave knew this was because the car was moving too fast for her eyes to keep up. For the sake of the mission, she wanted to urge Xia Liang to go even faster, but a glance at the speedometer climbing past two hundred made her abandon the thought. A driver had to be completely focused to drive this fast in the city, and distracting him would be incredibly dangerous.
Xia Liang's attention was indeed highly focused. He was also trying his best to keep the car steady so his passenger wouldn't be too uncomfortable. But he was a man, not a god. With all the drifting and high-risk overtaking, it was impossible to avoid bumps and jolts. For a ride that smooth, you'd need a high-speed train.
SCREECH—
The piercing sound of tires came from behind them. Big Wave's expression turned grim as she glanced in the rearview mirror.
"The pursuers are catching up. Can you shake them?"
Xia Liang also glanced in the mirror and replied helplessly, "Miss, this is a city, okay? I'm already going as fast as I can."
"Just do your best." Big Wave checked her weapon again, preparing to open the window and try to shoot out the tires of the cars behind them.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Xia Liang's eyes widened. "Volodya! They're actually opening fire on a public street? Who are these guys? That's insane!"
"A foreign organization. They're after something I have."
Apparently, Big Wave had a fiery temper herself and refused to be a sitting duck. She rolled down the window and began to return fire, kicking off a high-speed firefight in the middle of the street. The bystanders thought it was a movie scene and started pulling out their phones, chattering amongst themselves.
"Isn't the film festival on Victory Street?"
"Tsk, tsk. This must be some kind of publicity stunt for the festival, but they could've at least used a more expensive car."
"Yeah, for a film festival, the cars are pretty disappointing. They should've used a Ferrari, at least. But the gunshots sound pretty realistic."
"Do you guys see any cameras? I can't spot a camera car."
"They're probably using drones. You can't see them at night anyway."
Amid the slightly congested traffic, the black BMW weaved through lanes like a snake. Every overtake looked perilous, yet they always emerged unscathed. Once is luck; two, three, or more times is skill. However, the drivers of the several four-ringed cars behind them were no slouches either. They refused to be shaken off, maintaining a distance of five or six car lengths.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Get me a new magazine," Big Wave ordered.
"Where is it?"
"At the small of my back."
"Oh, okay."
"I said the small of my back! What are you grabbing?"
"Give me a break! I have to watch the road, don't I?"
