I Am The Only Witch Hunter

Chapter 175: Parare

An ordinary sigil may not need a sign sequence to register it into the system bracer. But an upgraded version of it required the necessary adjustment and control to make sure the evolution was precise.

All sigils originated from the three primes. Sulfur for offense. Salt for defense. And Mercury for utility.

Siderius clasped hands departed. His thumbs, index and middle fingers were stretched out while the rest remained bent. The stretched fingers formed an open triangle in front of Siderius. The center of the triangle aimed at the tortoise shell on the ground.

Then Siderius used the index and middle fingers of each hand to draw a square. Each hand completed half of the square.

Suddenly, the tortoise shell floated up. The Mercury seal on the ground lit up in a white color.

The original symbol for Parave, the diamond inside a circle, left the black mirror of Siderius' bracer. It enlarged and enveloped the tortoise shell entirely.

It became a three dimensional shape with a big sphere on the outside and an octahedron in the middle. Both shapes spun at place, causing the surrounding air to create a small and gentle vortex.

The tortoise shell in the middle slowly gained speed and spun alongside the two shapes. The salt seal on its surface lit up in blue. The solid material made up the shell disintegrates into small shiny green dust.

The shapes gained speed. The shell gained speed. All of them became a blur in the air.

Until the shell had completely crushed to dust. The green particles rearranged itself and turned into a cross in the middle of the shapes.

The sphere and diamond shape came to a halt abruptly. The green cross was illuminating in the middle of them.

Then the entire sigil shrunk. It turned back to a palm-sized symbol and flew back to Siderius.

He raised his bracer up as the sigil seeped under the black mirror.

[<Parave> has been successfully upgraded to <Parare>]

[SIGILS LIST UPDATED]

[SIGILS: <VERTIGO>; <PARARE>; <DISPELLERA>]

A sudden surge of coldness went over Siderius. A diametric shape appeared briefly over his body before disappearing completely.

It was the adjustment of the S.Y.S.T.E.M. to make sure the new sigil would be applied correctly to Siderius' body.

Without a system, all of these calculations needed to be done by hand by an alchemist then finalized before a usable sigil could be created. The system bracer could do all of that for Siderius.

"Finally, I can feel a bit safer on the road." Siderius mumbled.

<Parare> was a pure defensive sigil and could be extended for as long as Siderius could. Its durability was also much greater than <Parave>. Now Siderius could actually face a lot more threats head on.

"Vertigo can also be upgraded or replaced. But its upgraded version drains a lot of stamina. Not really suitable for me right now.

Other offensive sigils have their uses but I still prefer the opportunity Vertigo creates for me. Its effect is still very useful since my sigils were strengthened because of the Dark Aether.

I will keep the Vertigo sigil for now. Parare and Dispell are sufficient for me at the moment.

Next, I need to graft my second mutation as soon as possible."

Technically speaking, Siderius was still on the very first rank of a witch hunter, Oculus Extima I. He needed to graft a second mutation to actually ascend to Oculus Extima II.

Each organ had to mutate three times. Each witch hunter could build their power and ability however they liked according to their needs and styles.

"My first eye mutation is a pair of Nocturnal Eyes. Logically, the second mutation should be a pair of Cathemeral or Crepuscular eyes."

Cathemeral was a term for animals that were active in both day and night. Their schedule wasn't fixed and they could hunt both in daylight and darkness.

Crepuscular was a term for animals that were active specifically at twilight. When the sun began to set or to rise, it was their time for hunting.

Cathemeral included big cats like lions, some species of jaguars, lemurs, and coyotes, etc.

Crepuscular included small cats, tigers, rabbits, and deer, etc.

Most of the time, witch hunters would graft a mutation from the feline family as it provided the most benefits for their profession. Other animals were chosen too but they were much rarer.

The most popular choice for cathemeral eyes was lion. Their eyes could adapt in both day time and night time. It had a very wide field of vision and a solid choice to switch between nocturnal and diurnal.

The second popular choice was a pair of crepuscular eyes, usually a cat with their slit pupils. Slit pupils offered much more precise imagery in day time and the pupils could expand much wider in the night compared to cathemeral eyes. However, their field of vision was narrower than the lion.

There was one more nuance when picking the second rank of eyes mutation. As Siderius had picked a pair of nocturnal eyes as his first mutation. The next pair of eyes would also affect his first pair.

Crepuscular eyes would retain most if not all night vision ability of the nocturnal eyes.

Cathemeral eyes would lower the power of the nocturnal eyes in favor of a wider field of vision or other types of ability.

"That panther that attacked me before... The sun was starting to set then and its eyes had slit pupils. It must be a crepuscular animal."

Siderius already had the target for his second mutation. The panther that he and Red had encountered on their way to Scalize.

It could provide him with what he already knew, a pair of crepuscular eyes with slit pupils. And also granted him a new perspective about mutation as it was no mere beast.

It was a Chaos Beast that was born out of magic.

"My first mutation was a familiar. Its blood has magic but biologically speaking, it was still an ordinary beast.

Chaos Beast is entirely different. It can hardly be called a beast any more. Magic doesn't simply fuel it. It has become one with magic.

Grafting it may give very unpredictable results."

Siderius smirked at the last sentence. Unpredictable was guaranteed. But he would do it anyway.

Siderius went back to his temporary camp site and spent the night there. He fed the horse and the wolverine before having dinner himself.

The night went deep and the fire was put off. Siderius fell into his sleep and prepared for another hunt tomorrow.

The hunt for the Chaos Beast.

The hunt for his second mutation.
