I Am The Only Witch Hunter

Chapter 177: Bear Hunting

The arrow pierced into the bear's eye, blinding him on one side.

The bear had registered Siderius as a threat. Now there was no going back. It was a fight to the death for the bear.

The grizzly rushed at him on all four. Water splashed on its thick gray and brown coat. Its mouth stayed wide open and it was growling.

Siderius pulled the second arrow but he stopped mid-motion. He could easily end the bear with his barrage shot. But that would be too easy.

Siderius lowered the bow and unsheathed his sword. His left hand flexed to reveal the silver bracer.

"You are the perfect subject to test my new additions."

Siderius stretched his index and middle fingers. He used it as a pen to draw a cross in the air. A green cross appeared and illuminated.

A green barrier enveloped Siderius' body. The bear rammed directly onto the semi-transparent barrier. A crack sound was heard and thin broken veins appeared on the green barrier.

But it was not broken. Siderius held the green cross in his left hand and maintained its power. He was pushed back a dozen meters, the barrier dug into the ground and sent dirt flying up the air.

"Grrgh?" A rather confused growl left the throat of the bear. It felt like it just rammed into a piece of hard rock.

Siderius grinned. The barrier was even better than he thought. Muse be because of all the Dark Aether.

"My turn."

The hunter sliced the sword upward, removing the grasp the bear had on the green sphere. Then he jumped up, slamming the edge of the sword onto the neck of the bear.

Jumping was a stupid action in combat unless absolutely necessary. It removed your balance and opened you up for all kinds of attacks. You shouldn't do it unless you know exactly what you're trying to do.

The bear couldn't hurt Siderius because of the barrier. The blunted edge of the sword wouldn't be able to penetrate its skin. So Siderius jumped, allowing him to target its beck.

He used the sword as a hammer and slammed it into its neck with the purpose of breaking its bone. The thick fat and muscle around the bear's neck shrugged off the attack. The sword bounced off its neck, failing its purpose and only making the bear more angry.

"Eh. I'm becoming a little too fancy. Bears have great defense all around with a very dense bone structure. I'm overestimating what this sword can do."

The bear slapped at the green sphere, making it crack further and sending Siderius back a few steps.

"I shouldn't use sulfur fire… That hide of it is very valuable. Much more resilient than buffalo hide. It would be a very suitable cloak."

Siderius deactivated <Parare> and immediately the bear rushed at him. It may be an animal but it's smart enough to know it was Siderius' best defense.

Siderius quickly drew a V with a horizontal line in the air. The dizziness took over the bear and ít vision blurred. Still, it was able to slap its thick paw with long claws at Siderius.

The strike was far from precise and Siderius simply took a step back to avoid it. He raised the sword high and plunged it into the bear's mouth.

Its front teeth shattered and the dull blade penetrated into the soft flesh inside its mouth. Blood gushed out, pouring over either side of its mouth.

The bear was still alive and relentless. It shook its head wildly to get the sword off. Siderius pulled the blade out and connected it with a smack onto the bear's head.

It was disoriented even further.

"Lay and depart. Don't prolong your suffering."

Siderius stacked another <Vertigo> onto its psyche, causing the bear to wobble in place. Its heavy body fell down to the ground.

Siderius went around it and when the opportunity revealed, he plunged the sword into its other eye socket, piercing its brain.

The bear wailed for one last time. Then its body became motionless.

Siderius removed the blade. He carefully wiped it over his bent forearm, making sure no blood nor brain was sticking onto it.

"Depart in peace."

Then he dissected the beast. He carefully removed its skin, making sure no damage would be done to it. Then he removed the organs and harvested the meat as usual.

Siderius brought everything back to his camp. He salted the hide quickly to preserve it, getting it ready for further processing later. He gave the organs to Lycan and cooked the fatty meat of the bear for himself.

He enjoyed a full-on bear meal that was extremely fulfilling.

Soon after, the sun set and Siderius made a few traps around his campsite. They were purely alarm traps that would trigger if something big was going to appear.

Then he drifted off into the night at the temporary campsite.

The next day.

Originally, Siderius wanted to hunt for the Night Panther first. But now he wanted to make something first.

The bear hide was of very high quality and the sooner he processed it the better the final result was going to be. So Siderius wasted all morning to create a new alchemical formula.

It was a simple formula with the purpose of making a certain type of oil. This oil could strengthen the collagen within the bear hide and make it durable and resistant to water.

Then, Siderius could transform it into a suitable piece of clothing with Mercury Transformation.

Different from the buffalo hide previously, Siderius intended to keep all the fur and hair on the bear hide. It was going to be winter soon and a warm bear hide would be needed.

He created the oil easily with the ingredients he currently had. Siderius brought quite a college of herbs. Some he gathered himself and some he bought from Tanya. He only brought herbs that he deemed valuable. Most of the species were with Tanya in Santa Roberto. Her and Anna were looking after the herbs daily.

Once the oil was finished. Siderius used a Sulfur Separation to thoroughly cleanse the bear hide, removing any remaining meat, fat, and membrane on the underside of the fur.

Then he treated the hide with the oil. If he didn't need to preserve these hair, a simple Mercury Transformation would be sufficient, similar to the buffalo hide that he had made into the hunter uniform.

The oil strengthened the collagen and also made it permanently flexible and soft, suitable for a flowing piece of clothing.

Then Siderius drew a Mercury Transformation Seal on the ground. It had been a while since he used this seal.
