Siderius sliced off the skin on the knight's cheek and peeled the piece of flesh down. Underneath was an uncountable number of long elongated maggots with black color. They squirmed like an infestation.
"Ah. Finally see something familiar." Siderius whispered.
He hovered his hand right above the infestation, sulfur shot out of his pores and landed on the maggots.

"Maggots create flies. Flies create the Bubonic Plague. This was the exact same curse back in my world. But it is used to control instead of killing in this world.
Burn, you filthy insects."
Siderius pulled out Blazing Soul once more and hovered the flame over the maggots. The sulfur caught on fire and burned the maggots. They writhed in pain and screamed to their death.
Siderius then went over to the scarred knight. His body was also burning because of the attack from Blazing Soul previously. However, the black maggots weren't harmed. They emerged from the flesh of the dead, trying to escape.
Siderius threw sulfur on them. The prime of the soul burned through its defense and killed them all.
"Unfortunately I can't harvest any Dark Aether from them. This is Dark Magic. Tainted to an unrecognizable degree. Harvesting it would do more harm than good."
Once the two corpses burned to a crisp. Siderius then drew a big Salt Seal to conduct the Last Rite of the Dead.
[SALT -10]
[SALT EXTRACT: 290/300]
The two souls were sent to another world and its bodies were excluded from any remaining magic.
"Phew. That is done. Let's return."
Siderius returned to his camp. He saw Nina had already fallen asleep in the makeshift tent that he made for her.
Siderius took a look at the female noble. There were dried tears around the corner of her eyes. She must have cried for a bit before going to sleep.
"If Rohan was here, he would have hated this world so much. A kingdom of witches and dishonorable knights. How distasteful."
Not all knights were good in Siderius' old world. But there were very many good knights. Knights that believed in absolute good and honor.
"My face can still attract too much attention. A simple scarf won't do the trick now."
Siderius tapped his chin. He was thinking of making some kind of mask to hide his face. His golden eyes were too unique and his angelic face had become a hindrance.
"I have plenty of Mercury. Creating an iron mask would be easy. Maybe I can also add some function to the mask?"
Siderius wanted to go around in the woods to find the Smiling Redcap. But he had a damsel in his camp at the moment. He needed to drop her off to the nearest town first. Leaving her here alone for too long and he was sure that she would be snatched by some bear.
Without nothing much to do, he took out a piece of parchment and started to design a new mask.
"With Mercury, Salt, and Sulfur, it should be easy for me to synthesize a unique type of glass. That glass can be used as the lens for my mask. I also need to consider the field of vision as well.
The mask would restrict my vision but a wide–angled lens can minimize this disadvantage by a lot, providing a wider field of vision. However, I will still have a lot of blind spots."
Siderius tapped the quill on the parchment, thinking deeply.
"The wide-angled lens might not be that good of a solution."
Siderius suddenly remembered the maggots he had just dealt with. "Compound eyes of a fly had a very wide field of vision.
This is achieved because of thousands of individual light sensing units. Demophyrus, one of my former colleagues in Enderthal, once created a projection with a lens that mimicked the structure of the compound eyes.
That lens could achieve a 360 degree field of view. An impressive creation with a very simple concept.
Maybe I can recreate this and use it as the lens for my mask?"
Siderius drew on the parchment the design for the eyesockets of his mark. To achieve the same effect, the individual lens must link to each other seamlessly to create a system of interconnected vision.
"The material would be best as Dull Steel. It can provide even more protection for me. Without George, I will need to do the smithing myself."
Mercury could transform almost anything. But to achieve the hardness and durability of Dull Steel, traditional craftsmanship was needed.
It was simply a more superior form of creating tools. That was why blacksmithing persisted in Siderius' old world, even with the existence of Alchemist's wonderful Mercury Transformation.
"I can also design the mask as a gas mask… This combined with the Odor Bomb would be a very deadly combo.
The Odor Bomb can also be improved to be honest. It had a very good stunning effect because of the disgusting smell of Canis Fetorium. Teddy used a type of Smoke Bomb before, created by the Shadow Blade Guild.
His Smoke Bomb is made by Saltpetre and some Zinc Oxide components. The Hunter Association had some of that kind of bomb once. But it was discontinued because of its ineffectiveness.
We did make a different kind of bomb, however. A more dangerous one. By fusing salt and zinc, we created Zinc Chloride. The smoke created by it was highly toxic and when inhaled would create acid hydrochloric in the lungs.
Now if I combine this with the Odor Bomb… It would be more than a simple stunning effect.
I'll name this Toxic Bomb. With that, I can make use of the filtration function of the iron mask accordingly."
Siderius didn't rest as he still had a lot of strength left. He spent the entire afternoon and deep into the evening designing his next tool.
Nina woke up in the night. She slowly woke up to see Siderius kneeling and writing elegantly on the parchment. Around him were countless papers with each having some sketches, formulaic numbers and details of his design.
Nina approached him and picked up a paper. She couldn't read what was on it but she could appreciate the masterful stroke of the quill.
"It is very… beautiful." Nina mumbled.
Siderius' drawing had a different field than the usual painting she saw. It was super realistic and had great geometric value. It lacked all the dreamy and artsy flavour of a usual painting.
"You're awake? How are you feeling right now?" Siderius said.
