The Magnificent Son-in-law

Chapter 610: Corrosion

"Watch them closely, make sure they don't spread out," Xiao Feng said resolutely.

He then dashed towards the kitchen, grabbing a large bucket of oil and pouring it over the small toads on the floor... let's just call them toads for now.

Because the sound they made wasn't "chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp."

Perhaps because they weren't prepared and had their warts chopped off by Su Yuzhuo, these premature little toads didn't jump up to attack or scatter and flee.

Instead, they crowded towards the center, moving only within a confined area.

Xiao Feng lit a piece of paper and tossed it down.

"Boom!"

The oil-soaked toads immediately burst into flames.

"Chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp!"

The piercing cries grew even more intense, the toads began to struggle, but showed no signs of scattering and fleeing.

Xiao Feng frowned tightly, survival was a biological instinct, yet at such a time they still huddled together, which was clearly against all logic.

Just then, Su Yuzhuo's eyes widened suddenly as she exclaimed, "Look quickly!"

Xiao Feng followed the direction of her finger, only to see, within the burning fireball, a toad much larger than the others, about the size of a fist.

The size of a fist might not sound big, but compared to the other marble-sized toads, it was undoubtedly much larger.

What was even more startling was that all the surrounding little toads were desperately surging into the mouth of that fist-sized toad.

Meanwhile, the fist-sized toad opened its mouth occasionally, letting a few toads in, its mouth bulging as if it was chewing delicacies, repeating the process over and over.

"This toad seems to have grown bigger than a moment ago?" Su Yuzhuo said uncertainly.

Xiao Feng nodded gravely and added, "And it isn't afraid of the flames."

He also noticed that as it devoured its kin, the central toad was gradually increasing in size, and while many small toads were roasted to char, it nestled safely at the center, as steady as an old dog.

"What do we do now?" Su Yuzhuo asked.

Xiao Feng was amused, "This is your mess, you should be the one figuring out a solution, why ask me?"

Su Yuzhuo was slightly embarrassed, but at that time she was in a fit of anger, she couldn't blame herself entirely.

If blame was to be assigned, it should be on that bastard dressed like a beggar, who came at a most inconvenient time.

Of course, now wasn't the time for finger-pointing, Su Yuzhuo immediately went back inside to concoct a highly corrosive liquid.

Xiao Feng remained by the burning toads, coldly watching as the number of small toads dwindled and the central toad grew larger.

The situation seemed relatively clear; until it finished devouring all the small toads, the central one likely wouldn't concern itself with anything else.

With this in mind, Xiao Feng fetched a basin of cold water from inside and poured it over the fire.

"Sizzle-sizzle-sizzle..."

White steam rose up, briefly obscuring the view.

When visibility returned, Xiao Feng noticed a toad with one less hind leg still struggling to move towards the central toad.

Could its vitality really be so tenacious?

Xiao Feng's eyelids twitched violently; if even the small toads were like this, what would the central one be like?

At least for now, it was certain the opponent wasn't afraid of fire, how thick must its skin be?

One uncertainty after another popped up in his mind, and as the toad's size increased, so did its feeding speed and quantity. At this rate, it might take less than five minutes for it to consume all the toads.

As time ticked by and only a few toads remained, Xiao Feng couldn't help but glance at Su Yuzhuo's room, wondering if the girl had just run away?

While pondering, he suddenly heard a "whoosh" sound.

Quickly gathering his wits, Xiao Feng saw the toad missing a leg getting snatched by a red tongue.

"Phew..."

Letting out a breath, Xiao Feng braced himself; if there was no other choice, he'd have to go head-to-head!

Meanwhile, after devouring all its kin, the toad hopped twice and faced Xiao Feng directly, its greenish eyes bulging wide, ready to attack at any moment.

This scene reminded Xiao Feng of the giant Red-eyed Toad he had seen in the cavern, in comparison, this one couldn't hold a candle to it.

Just as he was thinking, the now roughly head-sized toad suddenly opened its big mouth, and the red tongue lashed out.

"Whoosh!"

Xiao Feng dared not be careless, pulling out a dagger and raising it in front as a blocking stance.

The red tongue wrapped around the dagger twice, and then Xiao Feng felt a pulling force.

"Puff!"

A section of the red tongue got sliced off, dropping to the ground.

A look of surprise crossed Xiao Feng's face; was it this easy to deal with?

This was not at all what he had anticipated.

Yet thinking it over, it made sense; if any random toad was as formidable as the Red-eyed Toad he saw in the cavern, humans would have long been dethroned from the top of the food chain.

"Chirp!"

The toad let out a sharp screech, stinging the eardrums.

Following that, the toad jumped away from Xiao Feng, revealing its bumpy back.

Xiao Feng knew something was amiss and immediately ran inside, closing the doors and windows tightly.

At the moment the windows were shutting, Xiao Feng saw purplish-black liquid shooting from the bumps on the toad's back, traveling as fast as bullets.

Through the carved slits in the window, he saw that wherever the purplish-black venom landed, the surface would slowly show signs of corrosion.

At the moment, the ground's blue bricks were pitted with holes about two centimeters in diameter and less than one centimeter deep.

Seeing such an effect on hard bricks and stones, one could easily imagine the result if it landed on skin.

Xiao Feng opened the window, aimed at the toad in the courtyard, and hurled the dagger at it.

The toad's eyes darted about, apparently aware of this threat, and promptly leaped to avoid it.

After making the evasive leap, the toad didn't stay put; it continued bounding towards the window, clearly not intending to let Xiao Feng off the hook.

"Brother Toad, the enemy you're looking for is in that building over there," Xiao Feng pointed towards Su Yuzhuo's room.

Predictably, it was to no avail; the toad seemed dead set on Xiao Feng, hopping closer bit by bit.

After all, it was Xiao Feng who had set it on fire and cut off its tongue, so it naturally harbored a stronger grudge against him.

Xiao Feng immediately jumped out the window; with the courtyard being more open, it would be easier to dodge a wave of venom attacks than in a cramped room.

Now that the dagger was gone, Xiao Feng had to grab a shovel from outside the kitchen door.

The toad leaped high, reaching a height of three meters, its eyes full of unabashed malice!

Xiao Feng wasn't daunted, raising the shovel directly.

"Crunch!"

Half of the shovel blade embedded itself into the toad's body, brownish blood oozing from the wound and dripping onto the ground.

"Drip-drip-drip..."

Xiao Feng was astonished to see a large hole appearing on the ground at a visible pace; this time, the brown liquid had corroded right through the blue bricks, exposing the soil beneath.
