Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 243: Sniper

Continuing the journey, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei drove south, and upon reaching east of Tunshan Village, they took a detour towards the east.

They traveled for most of the day before arriving at the border of Qinnan City. Along the way, there were mountains to the north and plains to the south, illustrating the vastness of Pingchuan City and the length of Qin Mountain.

On the plains, the fields were abandoned. Steel frames could be seen standing or fallen, quite different from the west.

Pingchuan City was split into two regions, yet they had so many differences. The west was filled with greenhouses with earthen walls, unlike the east which only had simple steel frame structures, absent in the west.

Was it due to different habits, or was the geological environment different?

Lu Xi'an didn't understand, couldn't make heads or tails of it, and asked Gou, who also didn't have any information stored regarding this matter.

If Shu was around, perhaps they could ask that old man. But the old man had left, so there was no one to ask, and Lu Xi'an decided to let the issue go.

After all, this question wasn't of much use to him.

Luo Ping mentioned that there were people in Qinshan County, but no Neo-Humans. As Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei approached Qinshan County, they checked the Resonant Gene Scanner. Seeing no new red dots, they felt a bit more at ease.

However, they still didn't enter the town, nor did they take the road at the foot of the northern mountains.

Although it wasn't raining now, and the risk of landslides should be very low, better safe than sorry. They chose to take the road from the south instead.

Yao Wei looked at "World Map One," noting that the southern outer ring road had few houses, just an old-world high voltage power plant.

When they drove by the plant, they saw that the buildings were still intact. The outdoor high-voltage equipment was gray with blackish scorch marks, suggesting they had malfunctioned long ago.

"Do you think there might be computers or something in there?"

Lu Xi'an asked.

"There should be..."

Yao Wei replied.

She thought of the sewage treatment plant they had visited in Ox Head County.

Back then, they found working computers there, and Lu Xi'an had imported videos and music from an old hard drive into a laptop.

On their way back from the south of Jianshan City, they even took a monitor from there to connect to a gaming console for playing games.

But now, with the RV, they didn't need the monitor anymore, leaving it back at the 923 Base. The RV had no shortage of electricity or electronic devices, making it unnecessary to go inside and check it out.

"It's really nice."

She suddenly couldn't help but say.

Lu Xi'an asked, "What's really nice?"

Yao Wei said, "Not having to go around searching for things, it's really nice."

Lu Xi'an smiled, "You mean it's nice having abundant supplies?"

Yao Wei nodded, "Yes."

Lu Xi'an said, "We do have fewer shortages now, so we don't need to look. Having ample supplies is indeed nice. But when we come across good places, we should still take a look.

"Such as the transmission tower in Mengxin City, or the orchards we've seen before. Or places like the refuge or Institute 923.

"Those places are treasures of human civilization from the past. If we pass by without noticing, it would be such a waste."

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded, agreeing with Lu Xi'an. He always seemed to be right, and she realized unknowingly, she had grown accustomed to just listening and stopped thinking.

Thinking was a job left to Lu Xi'an.

—Of course, she just thought of this casually. On matters of decision-making, she often relied on Lu Xi'an, but in special situations, she would still instinctively think and judge.

Like when figuring out how to fight, how to cooperate with Lu Xi'an, what to do in bed, and when to stop Lu Xi'an.

The high voltage power plant drew near, with sounds of human voices coming from within.

Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei exchanged a glance, becoming cautious. Yao Wei rolled down the window, holding a short needle, while Lu Xi'an gripped the steering wheel and said, "I'm going to speed up."

After Yao Wei nodded, he floored the gas pedal, pushing the RV's speed to its maximum, racing forward and passing by the power plant.

—The high voltage power plant was actually a short distance from the outer ring road, similar to the apple orchard they encountered southeast of Tunshan Village before, where one had to walk a little before reaching the gate.

With Lu Xi'an driving this fast, it would take a moment for the people inside to react.

Yao Wei held the short needle, keeping a close eye on the factory, seeing the bumpy path outside lined with damaged asphalt, making it difficult for any cars chasing them.

Lu Xi'an floored the pedal and quickly passed that path in front.

Both he and Yao Wei had excellent hearing, able to hear the chaos inside the plant, voices yelling "Someone's here," or "A car, there's a car outside," and also "Quick, quick," not sure if that was out of fear or for some other reason.

To be safe, Lu Xi'an didn't slow down much, planning to slow down only after they got further away.

This speed was nothing for them, as they could catch up on foot using their full speed.

"Do you remember how we were back in Yu Bei and Fengcheng County?"

Lu Xi'an asked casually while driving.

He couldn't recall the name of the village, only that as they passed through, someone in the village had fired at them.

They ignored those people and ran directly. On subsequent trips, they always took a detour.

In the end, the people in that village were all exchanged life for life by Luo Ping.

But now, looking back on that experience, it seemed like only he himself remembered it. He turned to look at Yao Wei and saw her confused expression, realizing she hadn't remembered.

"If you don't remember, that's fine, it's not a big..."

Lu Xi'an started to say.

He wanted to say "it's not a big deal," but before he could finish the word "deal," he abruptly heard Gou's electronic synthesized voice through the RV speaker:

"Attention, there's an unidentified light source behind us, suspected to be the reflection of a telescope or scope lens."

Lu Xi'an's heart jolted, and he slammed on the brakes—he had been driving at the maximum speed, and on such bumpy roads, he couldn't go any faster.

At such high speed, turning the steering wheel wasn't a good idea, it could temporarily lose control of the vehicle, so it was better to stop the car.

He heard Gou's words clearly, mentioning the reflection from a telescope or scope lens.

A scope... what kind of scope?

Driving so fast, the RV had already distanced itself from the high-voltage power plant, and besides, there was a small road between the plant and the outer ring road, far beyond the range of ordinary firearms.

So what could hit the car, other than a sniper rifle equipped with a scope?

At such a distance and at such speed, for the person inside to hit him, they would need to aim ahead, right?

So Lu Xi'an decisively shifted his foot from the gas pedal to the brake and stomped on it.

But that wasn't enough.

That certainly wasn't enough.

What if a bullet came, and it still hit the RV?

After stopping the car, Lu Xi'an shifted gear and opened the door to get out.

At that moment, he fully understood the feeling Yao Wei had when she hurriedly fled from those ordinary people in Fengcheng County.

As Neo-Humans, they certainly weren't afraid of ordinary people, and after so much training, they wouldn't fear half-Neo-Humans like Shu or Fish Rider either.

But the problem was that their vehicle couldn't handle it.

This car was their important ride and resource storage, although reinforced with radiation-resistant lightweight composite materials, who knew if there might be weak points, just right for a sniper's bullet to penetrate?

If the tire got blown out, that would be a disaster.

The road ahead was still long, what would they do then?

So, it was time to use their bodies to block the bullet!

And Yao Wei had already leaped out of the car window onto the roof.

"Bang!"

A loud noise rang out from behind.

Lu Xi'an quickly followed Yao Wei onto the roof and saw a large-caliber bullet blazing towards them, with a flash of sparks in the distance behind.

Indeed, it was a sniper rifle.

Indeed, the shooter had aimed ahead, sending the bullet forward.

If the car hadn't stopped and continued forward, the shot would have likely hit the rear wheel of the vehicle.

Jeez!

There was a sniper god hiding in that high-voltage power plant! That shot was aimed right at the RV's wheel!

How could Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei tolerate this? They both launched into action, swinging their arms and sending two short needles whooshing out, crossing paths with the bullet.

Once they confirmed the bullet wouldn't hit the car's current position, they didn't care about it anymore, focusing directly on the shooter in the power plant.

The person was on the third-floor side window of the high-voltage power plant, where the window had long been shattered, and a long black sniper rifle was set up.

The person stood behind the window, tilting his head, his eye against the scope above the rifle.

Their actions were professional, breathing steady, cold-blooded and confident.

But in the next moment, his head jerked back, two thin, straight blood lines shooting out, and his body slumped out of the window, disappearing.

The sniper rifle also slid backward, disappearing into the building from the window ledge on the third floor of the power plant.

The highly skilled sniper was ultimately no match for the Type A Neo-Humans like them, nurtured by Fungus Stone and trained professionally.

"Let's go."

Seeing that both her and Lu Xi'an's short needles had hit their mark, Yao Wei spoke, ready to return to the car and continue their journey.

However, Lu Xi'an had a different idea, jumped down from the car, and said, "Let's wait first." Then he asked Gou, "Gou, can you auto-drive and take the car to somewhere safe and wait for us?"

Gou replied, "No problem, Mechanical Dog 02 can self-control the vehicle for temporary avoidance and return when appropriate."

Lu Xi'an nodded, "Good." Through the window, he said to Yao Wei, "Shall we go in and take a look? That sniper rifle should have a longer range, quite useful against Type C Neo-Humans."
