Chapter 377: Cast a Long Line to Catch a Big Fish

When leaving the house, he still chose a gun as the main tool for this mission. After all, firearms have their own advantages, with a range at a distance that cold weapons cannot achieve.

He shot a bullet at the driver's seat, hitting the originally shattered spot, adding another shot. The same position, the same hole, without any deviation. Such precision made Zhang Teng feel fear.

This wasn't the first time facing off against Xiao Lin. His prowess had left a significant impression in Zhang Teng's mind. If it was just dealing with the assassins they sent, he was confident he could avoid them, but facing Xiao Lin, he didn't have that chance.

The bullet shattered the last layer of defense, entering the driver's seat from the windshield. Zhang Teng dove down, the bullet grazing his scalp and sinking into the car seat with a dull thud. Although it only hit the leather seat, the burst of fragments exploded next to him, the pain suddenly flaring. He couldn't afford to check what happened. Just as Xiao Lin prepared to fire a third bullet, Zhang Teng floored the accelerator, heading straight for the white QQ.

This reckless approach, fighting to the death, was foolish. Xiao Lin rolled on the ground to dodge. The collision between the vehicles shattered some of the glass display windows on the roadside. The white QQ was knocked far away, the entire front crushed inward, the right side crumpled and steaming.

Xiao Lin stood there watching his car motionless, throwing his gun far away. Seeing this, Zhang Teng jumped out of the car. The road ahead was blocked by the vehicle, so trying to escape by car was unrealistic. Police cars were steadily arriving and lining up behind him. He picked up the gun and threw it toward the bustling shopping area at the side of the road.

"Where is he?" Wu Shuang arrived with the SWAT team, looking at the brutal scene in front of her. She couldn't help but give Xiao Lin a once-over. From the aura he was emitting, she knew he was all right now, but someone was going to be terribly miserable.

Xiao Lin brushed off Wu Shuang, who was blocking his path, and chased in the direction Zhang Teng fled. His car had been destroyed by that damn bastard, and the repair cost would have to be recovered.

It wasn't the weekend, so there weren't many people in the mall. It had just opened, and aside from the staff, the guests wandering around were sparse. Zhang Teng, holding a gun, stormed in, scaring the staff into screaming. Security also rushed over from all sides, holding electric batons in their hands.

He let out a cold laugh, first knocking down the nearest security guard to the ground, picking up his electric baton and attacking his abdomen. Seeing their colleague attacked, the others swarmed in, and a brawl broke out. It was obvious the security guards were no match for Zhang Teng; in less than a move, all were subdued on the ground.

He didn't linger but ran towards the second floor. Xiao Lin checked the pulse of a few security guards, finding signs of a heartbeat. They were merely unconscious and not in serious trouble. He climbed onto the display shelf in the mall's atrium, jumped onto the escalator from the top, and was now only five steps away from Zhang Teng.

The second-floor staff all hid in their shops, leaving only Zhang Teng visible in the corridor. He was trying to jump a bridge connected to the subway below; that was his escape route. Once Xiao Lin instantly grasped the other's plan, he leapt to shorten the distance between them.

"Zhang Teng!"

Xiao Lin shouted at him, the latter hesitated for just half a second, which gave Xiao Lin the advantage.

Without thinking, he picked up a mop left by the cleaner and aimed at Zhang Teng's knee. With a bend, Zhang Teng fell to the ground, rolled over, and stood up again. At this time, Xiao Lin was right in front of him: "Do you think you can still run away?"

Zhang Teng glared at him, making an unyielding sound: "If I can escape from you once, I can do it a second time." After saying that, he launched a quick and fierce punch to force Xiao Lin back a few steps.

"Is that so?"

A left hook hit Zhang Teng's head. With a buzz, his mind went blank, and the person staggered back two steps.

"Humph!" Zhang Teng let out a cold snort at Xiao Lin's disdain. At this moment, if he didn't show real skill, he might end up finished here: "If you don't believe it, you can try again."

"No time for that." Less than half an hour remained until the scheduled time. His QQ was wrecked and needed to be sent to the repair shop. Waiting for the next engine batch to arrive would take an unknown amount of time. Thinking of this, he felt depressed and was even less likely to show mercy to this culprit in front of him.

"This time, I'll finish it quickly."

Zhang Teng was moving his arms and legs in a strange posture, while Xiao Lin didn't move. He was simply observing his every move quietly. This was what it meant to observe the changes, understanding the enemy to exploit weaknesses.

In Xiao Lin's eyes, Zhang Teng was considered a strong opponent, a formidable and hidden one. His appearance had initially misled Xiao Lin's understanding of him, so this time he would handle it more cautiously. While pondering, Zhang Teng launched an attack, both hands simultaneously aiming at Xiao Lin's belly. Assuming Xiao Lin would make a defensive move, his right fist suddenly changed direction toward the open head.

The body's motor nerves are a peculiar discipline. Typically, when a person is confronted with a crisis, their limbs will make a direct protective gesture in the seconds before the brain reacts. In other words, when faced with danger, limb movements are faster than brain responses. Hence, when Xiao Lin shielded himself with his two hands, it was a reflex, exposing his upper body. Under normal circumstances, people would not make further attacks simultaneously, but Zhang Teng could.

He used this gap to make what he thought was the best attack, but since his opponent was Xiao Lin, when he was feeling triumphant, a sharp pain erupted below. A merciless kick hit the most vulnerable part of a man.

The whole person curled up like a shrimp on the ground, his face as red as a tomato, with a wet patch evident in the crotch area.

"This kick is for Lin Jiaqi."

Once Zhang Teng stood firm, Xiao Lin tilted his head: "Still running?"

"Only fools don't run!" A slight chuckle came from a nearby store, and both of them turned their eyes to two girls closest to the store entrance.

Bam! A shot shattered the glass, and Zhang Teng rushed over, grabbing a girl by the hair, pulling her to him, and pointing a gun at her head.

"Planning to shoulder another life debt?"

He's rescued hostages countless times. You could say, not so reliably, that he could save people from such scenarios even with his eyes closed.

If a criminal resorts to taking hostages to escape, it fully proves that he's at the end of his rope. If you need outside help, it's already a glaring flaw and weakness. For someone like Dragon Soul, who always completes his goals, killing the criminal is completing the mission, so other factors hold little significance for him.

Zhang Teng didn't know this, so he couldn't understand why this young man in his early twenties was so confident. How could an emergency room doctor from a college hospital remain so calm, with a live hostage in his hands that seemed like just an object?

Zhang Teng's eyes betrayed his anxiety, and Xiao Lin seized this moment. No one saw how he moved, but he had said he didn't want to waste time here. In that brief instant, a Silver Needle pierced into the hollow of Zhang Teng's left shoulder.

Suddenly, half his body went numb. Even though he still held the gun in his right hand, the body relies on balance, and the left side's numbness affected the right. He took a step back, struggling to hold the gun, looking in terror at Xiao Lin, while the girl took the chance to hide behind Xiao Lin.

"Feeling like your left side's not moving? Soon your left leg will lose sensation too." Xiao Lin's hands were tucked in his pockets. The man before him posed no threat, and before Wu Shuang arrived, he had many questions to ask.

"I'll give you a choice."

"You won't get any information from me. I'm dead either way." Zhang Teng wasn't an idiot, and he knew Xiao Lin wasn't bluffing. He searched around for the nearest escape, with the bridge just behind him.

"Yes, death is inevitable. It's just a matter of quicker or slower." Zhang Teng's crime was a capital one. Whether he cooperated or not, the outcome was the same.

"So, it doesn't matter!" Zhang Teng retreated without haste, and Xiao Lin didn't press him, standing still.

"But it does make a difference."

"What?"

"At least you won't be lonely on the way."

Hehehe! Zhang Teng burst into laughter. A bullet whizzed from his right side, the air rippling, but he couldn't dodge. It pierced through his shoulder bone, causing him to stumble down the steps. Xiao Lin ran a few steps but then stopped.

"Why aren't you pursuing?" Wu Shuang arrived, holding a gun.

"Was that your shot just now?"

"No!" Wu Shuang climbed the steps, looking down, but Zhang Teng was gone.

"You intentionally let him go!"

"Yes!" Xiao Lin nodded. Killing Zhang Teng was really easy. Just now, if the Silver Needle had been thrust one centimeter further, it would have ended it, but that's not the result he wanted.

"You know it won't be easy to catch him again." Wu Shuang, annoyed, felt like twisting Xiao Lin's head off and kicking it like a ball. Her plans for the last few days were wasted.

"He won't escape." Xiao Lin was confident, winking at Wu Shuang: "How do you catch big fish without using bait?"

"You're letting a tiger return to the mountain." Wu Shuang turned her head away, not wanting to see his teasing grin.

"Someone wants him dead even more than we do. With Zhang Teng's personality, what will happen?" He reached out to ruffle Wu Shuang's disheveled hair: "Officer Wu, we just need to patiently fish, conserve energy. Look, you've turned into a panda."

He couldn't resist the urge to tease her whenever they met, laughing playfully.

"This is a super ticket! Mr. Xiao."

"What?" Taking the ticket Wu Shuang handed over, Xiao Lin looked dumbfounded.

"Wrong-way driving plus speeding, setting up obstacles on the main road causing traffic congestion. Your driver's license is about to be revoked!"

Uh... You really can't mess with women. (To be continued. If you like this work, feel free to visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly votes. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
