Chapter 550: Children's Prank

"Lao Zhao, who is this woman, acting all high and mighty?" The young police officer surnamed Lin asked while helping his elderly mother up off the ground, ushering people out.

Director Zhao shot him a sideways glance and snorted. This kid usually under his nose does a lot of small tricks and gets quite a bit of benefit, why haven't his eyes become sharp like a hawk's yet? Just by looking at Wu Shuang, it's clear she's not an ordinary person, and yet he wanted to play a double act. Now look what happened, he got dragged in too. "You'd better watch out for yourself, kid!"

After saying that, Director Zhao walked over to Wu Shuang. Ah San's corpse was quite horrific to look at, the lower body was covered in bloodstains, seemed like he had been castrated, but this wasn't the real cause of his death. Excessive blood loss might have been a factor leading to quick death, but the fatal blow was a deep cut from the head to the shoulder, slicing the entire head in half.

Wu Shuang covered the body with a mat, took off her gloves, and tossed them into the trash. "When did you find him, and where did you find him?" she asked Director Zhao while scrolling through her phone.

"At..."

The call connected instantly, and Wu Shuang heard from the forensic doctor, feeling a bit embarrassed. After explaining the situation briefly over the phone, she hung up. "Sorry, what were you saying just now?" she asked, having been distracted by the call.

"Oh, it's alright." Director Zhao replied with a warm smile, his face full of wrinkles. "We didn't find him; someone sent an anonymous letter to the department asking us to come here to pick up something. When we checked, it was a corpse, so bloody and unrecognizable. We cleaned it up a bit afterward to identify it."

"Oh?" Wu Shuang found it intriguing, such a thing happening? "Where's the letter?"

Director Zhao dashed over to his desk, retrieved a sheet of paper from a drawer, and handed it to Wu Shuang. The white paper had various fonts pasted together forming a message, matching what Director Zhao had told her.

"Who was the first person to receive the letter?" Wu Shuang took a plastic sealing bag, put the paper inside, and packed it into her bag.

"Xiao Lin, come over here," Director Zhao called to the smoking officer outside. Wu Shuang glanced up and saw the person from before, with no expression in her eyes.

"Were you the first to come across the anonymous letter? What was the situation then?"

"It was probably a few nights ago, I was on duty with a colleague. I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and found a white object pressed under the window sill. In the dark of night it stood out, so I went over and picked it up. It was a paper with some pasted words, I thought it was just some kids playing a prank again, and put it aside, didn't think much of it." As he spoke, Director Zhao kicked him hard; Xiao Lin realized he misspoke and sneaked a glance at Wu Shuang.

"Continue!"

"Who knew we'd receive the same kind of letter again."

"You're saying there were two such letters?" Wu Shuang caught onto the key point. "Where's the other one?"

"Threw it away! The one in your hand is the second one, because it made us curious, thinking kids wouldn't pull the same trick twice, so we went to check it out."

"Kids' prank? Director Zhao, do you get these pranks often here?" Wu Shuang asked Director Zhao, who still maintained a smiling face, stubbornly denying that such things happened.

"I saw a few police cars on the way here, was that you guys?"

"The body is what we brought back. Two kilometers from here there's an old brick kiln factory, the body was buried in a kiln tunnel. Because it was so dark, we couldn't find his manhood, but everything else was intact." Saying this, Xiao Lin felt an urge to laugh; he couldn't hold it in when he saw the body, it was so morbidly funny.

"Is that funny?" Wu Shuang asked Xiao Lin, who immediately covered his mouth but still couldn't suppress the urge to laugh.

"Not funny, not funny at all." This woman looks good, but she's just too fierce.

"Take me to where the body was found."

"Wu Shuang, I think you should go tomorrow!" Director Zhao quickly stopped Wu Shuang from heading out. "It's already late, that brick kiln has been abandoned for years, never had electricity, going now you won't see anything useful. Plus, it's started raining outside, driving is hard, if something happens, what am I supposed to do!"

At some point, there was the sound of raindrops outside. Wu Shuang frowned; the weather forecast was totally off, wasn't it supposed to be dry?

Seeing Wu Shuang not responding, Director Zhao took a sip from a cup on the table. "Wu Shuang, what do you say to this: coming all the way from Yanjing central is quite far, and it's nearly midnight. Why don't you stay at our guesthouse for the night, it's clean, offers twenty-four-hour hot water? Government officials on business trips usually stay there."

"Just a moment, I have a colleague coming over." Wu Shuang didn't refuse Director Zhao's good intentions. This wasn't a bad idea; driving back and forth was indeed tiring. Plus, she wanted to get to the scene quickly, but the rain was too coincidental, not knowing if clues could be found tomorrow.

"Oh, sure!" Director Zhao nodded toward Xiao Lin, signaling him to hurry up and leave, as he was in the way. Xiao Lin received the message and slipped away quietly without saying a word.

"Director Zhao, does this Lin police officer have any background connections?" She thought, do they realize she couldn't see the eye exchanges just now? If she lacked this bit of alertness, she'd be a useless City Police Department captain.

"He doesn't have much background, just knows someone at the City Police Department."

"The person he knows wouldn't happen to be Director Lin, would it?" Thinking that their names were both Lin, Wu Shuang naturally connected the two in her mind. Director Zhao laughed awkwardly twice, neither affirming nor denying, putting on a sly appearance. Such people are the hardest to deal with, seeing too much, smooth talkers, ambiguous speech leaving one pondering for ages.

"Wu Shuang, I know you're a person who takes things seriously, but sometimes you've got to consider the people involved. If I hadn't stepped in just now, you'd have offended someone bigger."

Director Zhao sucked up to her, showing he was helping her out. "Oh, I really didn't know Xiao Lin had such a big backer, if it weren't for Director Zhao stepping in, the scene would have been hard to handle." (To be continued.
