The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 160: The Ideal Place (Part 2)

Yang Mingyuan arrived at Wanling City just as the sun was setting.

The tiny moon hung in the sky, unable to illuminate the earth sunk into darkness, but the entire Wanling City was brightly lit by countless lanterns floating in the air.

This scene made everyone feel as if they were in a dream.

"This is Wanling City; rest here for the night, we have food for you."

The leading demon took the crowd to a square filled with tents and said, "Starting tomorrow, we will arrange accommodation and employment for you."

The crowd began to settle in.

After choosing a tent with his daughter, Yang Mingyuan came out and saw people gathered in a corner of the square, buzzing with discussion.

He walked over and learned that it was the currency exchange spot.

Wanling City used paper money and would not accept external currency, which many found hard to accept.

"Wait here for me."

Yang Mingyuan told his daughter and then walked into the crowd, taking out some silver to exchange for paper notes.

Upon receiving the paper notes, Yang Mingyuan couldn't help but be stunned.

This wasn't just any paper; it was clearly a Daoist Talisman!

Yang Mingyuan examined the talisman in detail; it was impervious to fire and water, and difficult to tear, which made him admire the genius behind its design.

"Young man."

Just as Yang Mingyuan was about to leave with the talisman, an old man asked, "How could you just exchange it? Aren't you afraid of being deceived?"

"If they wanted to deceive us, they wouldn't have brought us all the way here just to do that."

Yang Mingyuan replied.

Thinking it over, the others felt the same and began to exchange some pieces of silver for paper notes.

The demons did not stop them from leaving the square, and after exchanging for paper notes, some of the bolder ones headed towards the city of Wanling.

Yang Mingyuan returned to his daughter's side and saw that she was happily playing with a butterfly hairpin in her hand.

"Where did you get this hairpin?"

Yang Mingyuan asked.

"A deer sister gave it to me," the girl answered. "She said that this hairpin is a Spiritual Object that keeps the hair from getting dusty."

Yang Mingyuan looked at the hairpin; he didn't know if it was a Spiritual Object, but he was certain that the pearl on the hairpin was quite valuable.

"Put it away."

He told the girl to put away the hairpin, and then they left the square.

The architecture of Wanling City was quaint and elegant, the streets crisscrossing in all directions—not only smooth and broad but also clean and tidy.

The streets were bustling with an endless flow of people, mainly consisting of various beautiful demons.

Even though they had transformed into human forms, they all retained some of the distinct features of demons.

"The demons here are so pretty."

The girl felt both envious and self-conscious.

Yang Mingyuan patted his daughter's head, "You will become beautiful too in time."

He liked the demons of Wanling City; they did not look at his daughter in any special way and could coexist harmoniously with humans.

There were demons and humans performing street acts together, surrounded by many cheering and applauding.

"Wanling City is so beautiful!"

The girl looked around in amazement.

The shops on both sides of the street were also diverse and colorful, with shrewd merchants displaying exquisite goods to attract customers, making Yang Mingyuan also tempted to spend money.

But he resisted.

He led his daughter around Wanling City and never got lost.

This was because there were road signs at every street corner, and in addition, there were small squares every few streets.

Some squares had a pool dug in the center, with water spraying high—two people high—referred to by the demons as towering fountains.

Some squares were planted with flowers, trees, and benches for people to rest, known as street gardens.

"It's truly incredible."

Yang Mingyuan couldn't help but think that everywhere he went, he saw designs and layouts full of convenience that he had never seen before.

"Who exactly designed Wanling City?"

He couldn't help but ask a passerby.

The passerby glanced at him and then pointed toward the sky.

Yang Mingyuan looked up and could see the only floating palace in the sky.

They had noticed this palace the moment they entered Wanling City.

"What place is that?"

The girl asked.

"The Great King's palace."

A passerby answered, "The designers of Wanling City are working on it. The original template was the Great King's idea."

Yang Mingyuan immediately felt admiration.

The girl was tired from walking, so Yang Mingyuan took her into a bustling tavern.

"You newcomers must be looking for something to eat, what would you like?"

A enthusiastic Rabbit Demon came up and asked, "I'll give a half-off discount to new customers."

"Half-off?"

Yang Mingyuan was surprised.

Everything about Wanling City surprised him.

Under the Rabbit Demon's guidance, he ordered their food and then looked around, noticing two people hidden behind a screen.

The shadows of these two people were cast on the screen, seemingly engaged in a conversation.

"Have they made a move?"

The person on the left asked.

The one on the right did not answer.

"I see, what about the north?"

The person on the left asked again, "Any news?"

The one on the right nodded, then shook his head.

"They've done nothing but preach Zen?"

The person on the left laughed, "That is quite interesting."

Yang Mingyuan also found it interesting.

These two people, one was speaking while the other was silent like wood.

Their voices were not loud and if it wasn't for him, surely no one else could hear them.

Yang Mingyuan wanted to continue eavesdropping when he suddenly heard a sharp scream.

"My hairpin!"

His daughter suddenly fell to the ground.

Yang Mingyuan turned around just in time to see someone snatching the girl's hairpin, trying to escape outside.

"Outrageous!"

Yang Mingyuan was filled with anger. He had just stood up when he saw a flash of white light at the entrance, and the thief was sent flying back, crashing heavily onto a table.

"I hate thieves."

A handsome young man walked in, "My mother said that those who want something for nothing deserve a spanking!"

Yang Mingyuan turned to see that the thief was actually one of the people who had followed them along the way.

He must have noticed the girl's treasure and followed them.

"I really let my guard down..."

Yang Mingyuan thought to himself.

The young man went up to the thief, snatched the hairpin from him, and tossed it to the girl: "This is yours."

The girl held the hairpin, staring blankly at the young man.

The young man lifted the thief and walked out of the tavern.

Yang Mingyuan watched his back, suddenly remembering that he had forgotten to thank him.

"That kid does have some skills."

A voice sounded behind Yang Mingyuan.

Yang Mingyuan turned around and was startled.

There were two people standing behind him.

"You're not bad either."

Sun Wukong looked at Yang Mingyuan and nodded, "Your cultivation is close to that of Independent Immortals. Report to the Emperor tomorrow."

The Emperor Donghua beside him glanced at Yang Mingyuan, before their figures vanished just as he was about to react.

"That's the Great King."

The nearby Demons said enviously, "Kid, the Great King has taken notice of you, you're going to be successful!"

Yang Mingyuan stood there dumbfounded, feeling as though he was in a dream.
