The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 43: A Sigh

"A rope was tied around Golden Cicada's hand."

Walking ahead while pulling the rope, Sun Wukong said, "Elder, this might inconvenience you a bit, but you don't mind, do you?"

"Not at all." Golden Cicada placed his palms together and replied, "It has been a long time since I descended to the Lower Realm; indeed, I am unfamiliar with the paths of the Mortal World."

Immortal Zhen Yuan shook his head on the side—getting lost is one thing, but vanishing into thin air is another.

"My worthy brother."

He proactively said to Sun Wukong, "Let me guide Elder Jin Chan."

Immortal Zhen Yuan took the rope from Sun Wukong's hand. He had led oxen and horses before, but this was the first time he was leading a Monk.

It felt rather novel.

"Elder," Sun Wukong continued to ask Golden Cicada, "Is this your Dharma Embodiment?"

Golden Cicada was taken aback, then nodded: "Yes."

Sun Wukong and Immortal Zhen Yuan exchanged glances, both understanding that Golden Cicada's sudden disappearance might have something to do with the Spiritual Network of Huaguo Mountain.

"The Spiritual Network is affecting his Dharma Embodiment."

"This Elder Jin Chan, it seems, is not adept at using Mana."

The two of them exchanged a few words in secret and figured out the cause.

The Spiritual Network had altered the spiritual fields of Huaguo Mountain. Descending to Huaguo Mountain as a Dharma Embodiment, Golden Cicada was affected by the Spiritual Network and couldn't control his Mana well. After getting lost, he could step far away with just one foot.

But this influence wasn't hard to dispel.

"Elder."

Sun Wukong turned around only to be startled again; Golden Cicada had vanished once more.

"Immortal," Sun Wukong asked Zhen Yuan, "where did he go?"

"In the sky."

Immortal Zhen Yuan pulled on the rope and replied, Sun Wukong looked up and, indeed, saw a Golden Cicada flying in the sky.

"Monkey King, save me, I can't control my embodiment."

Golden Cicada spoke loudly.

Sun Wukong slapped his forehead, only to suddenly see Immortal Zhen Yuan running a few steps while holding the rope.

"Immortal."

He quickly held him back: "Don't fly a kite here!"

Immortal Zhen Yuan chuckled: "I just couldn't help myself."

Sun Wukong chanted a Spell, and the rope tied to Golden Cicada shortened rapidly, pulling him back to the ground.

"My worthy brother," Immortal Zhen Yuan said, surprised as he looked at the rope: "Your hair is getting more and more magical."

Sun Wukong ignored him and asked Golden Cicada, "Elder, with all the Mana you possess, how come you are so unskilled at using it?"

Golden Cicada chanted 'Amitabha': "In the Western Heaven, I recite scriptures every day, and my Mana grows, but I have never used it."

Sun Wukong was somewhat speechless; this Golden Cicada seemed like a bookworm raised in indulgence.

He cast a Binding Spell, touching Golden Cicada, and bound the power of his embodiment.

"All settled," Sun Wukong said: "Now, even if the Elder gets lost, he won't wander off."

Elder Jin Chan looked at Sun Wukong with a face full of surprise, as the Monkey King's Divine Skills were truly formidable!

Sun Wukong hosted a banquet on Huaguo Mountain, entertaining this distinguished disciple of the Buddha.

During the banquet, the three of them discussed the topic of land.

"I once thought of using the Gathering Spirit Array to enrich the land."

Sun Wukong sighed: "It's a pity that the Array requires an Immortal Body to use, making it difficult to promote widely."

Zhen Yuan snorted coldly: "That Array takes from the Creation of heaven and earth—if it could be widely promoted, wouldn't everyone be using it for Cultivation?"

"That's true."

Golden Cicada nodded and then replied: "This humble monk is willing to offer a helping arm, don't know what assistance the Monkey King requires from me."

"Just call me Wukong."

Sun Wukong said: "I would like the Elder to teach me the method for making Sweet Dew."

He couldn't produce fertilizer, but Golden Cicada's Sweet Dew was far more useful than any fertilizer.

"My Sweet Dew is collected from the essence of plants and grasses; a single drop has to wait for a hundred years."

Golden Cicada shook his head and said, "It's absolutely impossible to use it as fertilizer."

Sun Wukong laughed: "I only need one ten-thousandth of it."

He only needs to create a fertilizer that is one ten-thousandth as effective as the nectar; it wouldn't be worse than chemical fertilizers, and since mortals can use it too, it would be extremely easy to popularize.

Golden Cicada gave it some thought.

"Teaching you is not out of the question."

He said, "It's just that I need to spend some days at Huaguo Mountain."

"Of course, you can."

Sun Wukong was overjoyed.

He and Immortal Zhenyuan have also researched fertilizers similar to the nectar, but due to insufficient technology. If they add the Buddhist technique, the production of the fertilizer should be just around the corner.

This Golden Cicada isn't a bad person, much better than that crybaby Tang Seng.

Sun Wukong was delighted in his heart, and he talked with Golden Cicada for the whole day.

After the feast, he dragged the two of them to the top of the mountain to enjoy the moonlight and discuss the Tao.

"This Monkey King is indeed a remarkable character."

Golden Cicada's fondness for Sun Wukong grew greatly.

Meanwhile, in Immortal Zhen Yuan's heart, there was considerable displeasure.

Although this Elder Jin Chan is the Buddha's second disciple, his demeanor is weak; he cannot even control his Dharma Embodiment well, which is fundamentally different from Sun Wukong.

"I, along with my virtuous brother, are children of heaven and earth; how could we sit together with him to discuss Buddhist scriptures and philosophy?"

Immortal Zhenyuan thought, feeling like Golden Cicada was lowering their standard.

Sun Wukong is naturally formed, with unfathomably deep mana, and he is very decisive—an Demon Immortal who can control his destiny and overturn the norms aligns with Immortal Zhen Yuan's taste.

Comparatively speaking, this Elder Jin Chan is like a sheltered young lady from a prominent family—pleasant to look at but not practical.

"How can I let my virtuous brother be snatched away by him!"

Immortal Zhenyuan thought to himself, and took out a Flat Peach from his sleeve, saying, "Virtuous brother, I have brought you a Flat Peach."

Good that he had taken a few more Flat Peaches.

Elder Jin Chan, watching this scene, had his thoughts racing.

This Ancestor of Earth Immortals has a proud character; he probably looks down on him. There was no need for Golden Cicada to oblige his bad mood.

On the other hand, the Monkey King was unpretentious and amiable, and he also had a strong affinity with Buddhism, which felt exceedingly cordial; he could not let Immortal Zhen Yuan coax him away.

"Monkey King."

Golden Cicada took out the teaware and personally brewed tea, saying, "Please do try the flower tea made by this humble monk."

The three Immortals sat together, ostensibly discussing the scriptures and the Tao, but each had their own thoughts.

The one who likely had the least thoughts might still be Sun Wukong.

And Ao Luan was hiding far away behind a tree, seething with frustration.

"Immortal Zhen Yuan, you cannot lose!"

She clenched her fist, cheering for Immortal Zhen Yuan for the first time.

Although this old Taoist was detestable, he was much better than the high disciple of the Buddha.

However, as Ao Luan watched for a while, she noticed something odd.

That monk and Taoist, why did they seem to be both currying favor with her brother?

Ao Luan watched for a while longer, then finally felt completely reassured.

"It seems my brother is still the formidable one..."

Ao Luan turned to leave.

This shaven-headed monk taking the initiative to ingratiate himself with her brother had unknowingly put himself at a disadvantage, and now trying to influence and convert her brother would be like dreaming an empty dream.

But Ao Luan felt somewhat disappointed—if she were more powerful, maybe she could also discuss Buddhist scriptures and philosophy with her brother.

Sun Wukong's cultivation is complete, attracting only those True Immortals of great accomplishment and their knowledge. In the end, Ao Luan was still lacking.

"Alas..."

Dragon Girl let out a sigh.

She needed to intensify her cultivation efforts.
