The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 54: The Only Hope

The last glimmer of the sun was about to disappear.

The creatures on the ground felt despair in their panic.

Amidst despair, a dazzling light suddenly flew up from the ground, piercing the darkness and rushing towards the sun.

The light was so bright, as if it was the only hope.

It collided with the shadows in the sky, erupting into a series of blinding glows. The sky trembled violently, yet the shadow that enveloped the sun dispersed and gathered again, seemingly unaffected.

The shadow quickly swallowed the last strand of sunlight and left the sky rapidly.

Before leaving, Sun Wukong seemed to have heard its sharp laughter.

Sun Wukong reached out to catch the Jingu Bang falling from the sky.

The Jingu Bang trembled slightly as if wronged, and Sun Wukong shook his head: "It's not your fault."

He looked up at the pitch-black sky canopy. A black wind drifted away from him, unnoticed by anyone.

The disappearance of the last sun made the girl behind Sun Wukong too preoccupied to notice this detail.

Sun Wukong looked at the girl: "We should return to the Immortal City now."

He took the girl and the carp, and with a Somersault Cloud, they returned to the Immortal City.

Standing amidst the dark land, the Immortal City was not dark at the moment; it was wrapped in raging flames.

Sun Wukong had just returned to the Immortal City when he found the streets filled with creatures frozen in place.

These creatures, some moving bricks, some frolicking, some drinking water—were all maintaining their original motion.

However, they seemed as if time had stopped for them, and what was more surprising was that there were no shadows beneath their feet.

The girl was frightened by this eerie scene.

"Is this the Immortal City?"

This Immortal City was nothing like what she had imagined.

Sun Wukong had already seen that these creatures must have been hit by some Spell, immobilized in place.

They had no shadows, probably because the shadows were the medium for the Spell.

Fortunately, not everyone was immobilized. Not long after Sun Wukong landed, streaks of light flew out from the inner city and landed in front of him.

"Little brother, you've finally come back."

Immortal Zhenyuan, with a lantern on his head, breathed a sigh of relief.

"What's that on your head?" Sun Wukong asked.

Besides Immortal Zhenyuan, the followers behind him, the Shouma people, also had large lanterns on their heads, and they kept a distance from one another, clearly delineated.

"Don't mention it."

Immortal Zhenyuan replied: "Some shadow-eating Demons suddenly appeared in the Immortal City. They used shadows to immobilize people, and we could only avoid their attacks by making our shadows smaller."

His face was displeased. The Immortal City had done everything to increase the defense, but there had still been an oversight.

This was because the people here were too foolish.

If the same situation occurred in the Three Realms, would such incidents happen?

"Shadow-eating Demons?" Sun Wukong looked around and noticed ominous black fog lurking in the dark.

"Is it them?"

Sun Wukong casually waved his hand, and a terrifying gust swept through the Immortal City, immediately vanishing the fog and the weird pressure was gone.

Immortal Zhenyuan and the Shouma people took off the lanterns from their heads after seeing this.

"This thing is boiling hot."

"I'll never wear it again."

Many of the Shouma people complained.

Sun Wukong turned to Immortal Zhenyuan: "Immortal, what's going on here?"

He was curious about what had happened in his absence.

"Just like I said earlier."

Immortal Zhenyuan answered: "Those shadow-eating bastards ambushed us, drew our attention, and someone took the opportunity to steal the sun from the sky."

They had fallen for a diversion tactic.

Immortal Zhenyuan judged that the sun had been stolen, not vanished—a point that aligned with Sun Wukong's own thinking.

"And you, little brother, why didn't you stop it from taking the sun?" Immortal Zhenyuan then asked.

Sun Wukong couldn't possibly be unaware of the consequences of a sunless sky; how come he, like the others, could not stop this accident?

"I couldn't stop it."

Sun Wukong answered.

His Jingu Bang couldn't harm the Heavenly Dog, and usual spells were of little use against it.

"Did the Buddha Beads do this?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

Sun Wukong had his suspicions, to the tune of seventy or eighty percent certainty.

"I don't know,"

But he shook his head, informing Immortal Zhenyuan that the Heavenly Dog was not the Buddha Beads.

He could see through at a glance that the Heavenly Dog and the Buddha Beads were two different existences.

However, despite this, Sun Wukong believed the Heavenly Dog was most certainly related to the Buddha Beads.

He decided to employ some tactics to find the Buddha Beads.

"Junior brother, what about these people?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked Sun Wukong again: "I have no idea how to release their Immobilization Spell."

"I understand."

Sun Wukong nodded, the Immobilization Spell of the Three Realms was different from here.

He looked down the street, stretched out his hand, and countless Immortal Talismans appeared in the sky, pouring towards the ground.

Amidst the booming sounds, smoke began to rise from under the feet of creatures on the street one by one, and as the smoke cleared, little monkeys lay fainted on the ground.

"Monkeys?"

Sun Wukong was surprised.

"Do not be softhearted, junior brother."

Immortal Zhenyuan said, then became curious.

"If you can undo this spell, why couldn't you catch that demon in the sky?"

The spell used by the demon in the sky seemed to be the same as that affecting these little monkeys.

"There's no connection between the two."

Sun Wukong stated.

Immortal Zhenyuan felt puzzled but said nothing more.

After the monkeys were expelled, the creatures on the street, one by one, regained their shadows and consciousness.

"What happened?"

"Why has the sky gone dark?"

They woke up to the disappearance of the sun and were thrown into chaos.

Sun Wukong instructed Immortal Zhenyuan to calm them down.

He then ordered the Mountain Gods to put out the fires of the Immortal City, and he watched over the city standing tall amidst the darkness.

"We need light."

Sun Wukong thought to himself.

With a flicker of thought, dozens of beams of light flew out from the palm of his hand, hovering in mid-air; upon closer examination, they turned out to be one after another luminous Magical Treasures.

These Magical Treasures reflected off each other, and their radiant light illuminated every corner of the Immortal City.

"Go."

Sun Wukong waved gently, and the lights flew towards different areas of the Immortal City.

Before long, radiant light burst forth in those areas, and building after building rose from the ground amidst the rumbling sounds.

Everyone watched this scene in astonishment.

In no time, these buildings naturally took shape, connected together, exceedingly splendid, endlessly dazzling.

Once more, the Immortal City expanded, and except for a few areas, reconstruction was almost entirely complete.

After the rebuild, the Immortal City, with daotraces linking from building to building, formed a large and complex web of light in the darkness, illuminating the entire city.

Even as the earth was plunged into darkness, the Immortal City still shone as brightly as if it were daytime.

It glittered brilliantly, its radiance attracting the eyes of countless creatures around it.

"There is light over there."

As the creatures witnessed this spectacle, they all rushed towards it.

Now, in the darkness following the sun's disappearance, the Immortal City was their only hope.
