The Supreme Beauty Fell in Love with Me

Chapter 068: Jeep

"Great." Lin Chuan was overjoyed. He hurried over and ripped off the red silk cloth.

To his astonishment, this military-green Beijing jeep had been fitted with a canvas top that matched the color of the body exactly. The jeep had been re-sprayed with a glossy finish all over. It was said that Zhou Kai had a good relationship with the owner of a repair shop and had the whole vehicle painted for just over a thousand yuan, making it look brand new.

"Beautiful!" Lin Chuan's eyes sparkled. The vehicle looked just like a jeep straight from the battlefield, and from a distance, even had a bit of the look of a domesticated Hummer, though a miniaturized version. Lin Chuan circled the vehicle, too excited to speak.

"Good, good, so good," Lin Chuan nodded enthusiastically.

"Brother Chuan, I've practically replaced every part of this jeep," Zhou Kai said with a smile. "It took a month and three days, but damn, it was worth the effort. I've finally got this vehicle all fixed up for you."

"Not bad, not bad," Lin Chuan nodded in agreement.

At that moment, Zhou Kai handed over the keys, saying, "Brother Chuan, here are the keys. Let's go for a ride."

"Okay." Lin Chuan lit a cigarette, took the keys, and dived into the vehicle.

The exterior of the vehicle was indeed impressive, but the interior was a mess with a severely aged plastic center console scattered with various old buttons. Although most had been wiped clean, the traces of years were still noticeable.

Lin Chuan inserted the key and turned it forcefully. A roaring sound ensued.

"Diesel engine, four-cylinder." Zhou Kai said excitedly, "Plenty of horsepower."

"Let's go," Lin Chuan responded.

Lin Chuan engaged the gear, released the clutch, and stomped on the gas pedal. The vehicle shot forward instantly. The diesel engine packed a lot of power, and though it lacked that great pushback feeling, the sensation of solid and steady acceleration was very comforting.

The jeep left the factory, and Zhou Kai followed behind, vigorously winding a lever. The canvas top gradually retracted until it was completely stowed away, after which Zhou Kai hopped onto the back seat, stepping on the rear pedal.

"Get on, let's go for a drive," Zhou Kai echoed.

Five or six people rushed up quickly. The vehicle had seven seats in total: just enough for all of them. The driver and co-driver's seats, three seats behind them, and two spots for the guards at the very back, facing backwards, ever vigilant.

Even with seven grown men seated, the vehicle still felt powerful enough. Lin Chuan pressed on the gas, and a thick black exhaust spewed from the rear.

"What a beast, this is awesome," Lin Chuan, thrilled, floored the accelerator. The four cylinders of the engine roared as the speed of the vehicle surged, quickly covering significant distance in the blink of an eye.

Zhou Kai shouted with excitement, "Roar! I'm finally riding in a military jeep."

It must be said that the vehicles built in that era really were made with conscience. Lin Chuan was surprised that the engine, after lying dormant for so many years, had not broken down. Not only that, the electrical system and the fuel system were almost completely intact, and Zhou Kai had only done some cleaning and repairs. Most of the replaced parts were damaged ones, such as the doors, some bearings, the steering system, and even the seats were newly purchased.

"Zhou Kai, you've really put some effort into this car," Lin Chuan smiled.

"Bro, of course, I've put effort in," Zhou Kai replied with a smile. "I even changed the mechanical steering system to an electronic one for you."

"Really?" Lin Chuan nodded. "Not bad, your auto repair skills are indeed impressive."

Lin Chuan's driving skills were also truly commendable. He floored the accelerator, and the vehicle picked up speed quickly. Even though the diesel engine couldn't provide a high output, it could still deliver enough torque. The vehicle had a high payload capacity and even with seven people aboard, it handled smoothly.

Crack, crack, crack...

However, just as they were about to return, a series of cracking sounds came from the engine compartment, and soon after, the vehicle stalled.

"What's going on?" Lin Chuan asked anxiously.

"It must be the catalytic converter that's broken," Zhou Kai said with some embarrassment. "I knew this could be a problem. Sigh, Brother Chuan, give me a few more days, I'll fix it quickly."

"Okay, then," Lin Chuan could only nod.

After that, Lin Chuan got out of the car, handed the keys back to Zhou Kai, and walked off to work. Zhou Kai and his team had come out in high spirits and now had to push the vehicle back, a not-so-small task for just a few hundred meters.

"Kai, how did you manage this?" complained Lu Dapao. "How did the car break down?"

"This old clunker, lying around for ten years, bound to have some problems on its first outing, isn't it?" Zhou Kai glared at Lu Dapao and cursed, "Hurry up, push the vehicle back."

Subsequently, the group could only push the car back. Zhou Kai sat in the driver's seat, the gear in neutral, hands on the steering wheel, while the others had no choice but to push from behind.

"Damn it, this is unfair, why does Kai get to sit in the car? And we have to push from below?"

"You don't know how to fix cars."

......

Lin Chuan walked towards the City Committee with a cigarette in his mouth. The weather was nice, sun shining brightly, it was exceptionally good, the clear blue sky felt incredibly transparent.

Just past the intersection of South Huai Mountain Road, a girl dressed in a white down jacket wearing a red knitted hat was walking towards him. When she saw Lin Chuan, she showed a surprised look, quickly changed her path, and walked towards Lin Chuan.

"You... You are Lin Chuan, right?" The girl looked at Lin Chuan apprehensively.

"Who are you?" Lin Chuan stared at the girl, a pair of rosy-cheeked oval faces, a pair of beautiful eyes, and a rather tall figure, over 1.6 meters. It's a shame she was wearing a knee-length long down jacket, completely wrapped up, making it impossible to see her figure. Although she was a beautiful woman, Lin Chuan still maintained his caution. The innate vigilance of a soldier is something that Lin Chuan could never rid himself of.

Zhang Wuji's mother once said, the prettier the woman, the more vicious, so one needs to be even more careful.

"I am a reporter from Jiangbei City Television, my name is Mu Bai." Mu Bai looked at Lin Chuan excitedly. She and her colleague had gone to the scene during the incident at the vanguard chemical plant, but the police had the area tightly sealed off, and they simply couldn't get in, only able to capture some external footage. However, through much effort, Mu Bai still learned some inside information, hearing that the vanguard chemical plant was saved because of two people, one was the police officer Zhang Wenhui from the South Huai Mountain Road station, and the other was Lin Chuan.

Today, Mu Bai was on her way to the South Huai Mountain Road station to find out the situation from Zhang Wenhui, and she did not expect to run into Lin Chuan halfway through. The world is full of wonders indeed.

"You... you know me?" Lin Chuan looked at her in surprise, wondering if it was because of the bank robbery case or the incident at the chemical plant.

"Yes." Mu Bai nodded, took out a voice recorder, and asked excitedly, "I heard that you participated in the rescue at the vanguard chemical plant, is that true?"

"I... I didn't." Lin Chuan hurriedly shook his head, saying, "I just went to the scene to look at the situation, I didn't participate in the rescue."

"Er..." Mu Bai was taken aback and said, "But according to what I know, you and Zhang Wenhui were the key figures in resolving the crisis."

"You're wrong." Lin Chuan said with an awkward smile, "What heroes we are, at most we were just bystanders. I have to go to work now."

After saying that, Lin Chuan started to run.

Seeing Lin Chuan running away, Mu Bai refused to give up so easily. She also started sprinting forward, shouting while she ran, "Lin Chuan, tell me about the situation on the spot. Why did the City Committee push all the merit onto the police station? And they even commended a bunch of unrelated people, aren't you angry about it at all?"

"Stop chasing me..." Lin Chuan shouted back.

"Then you tell me." Mu Bai clutched her bag and kept running.

The male and the female, the man naturally went unnoticed, but the beautiful woman left a deep impression. In the common people's view, it is usually the man who chases the woman, but it was rare to see a case of a woman chasing a man, especially a beautiful woman like Mu Bai.

"Ah man, good cabbages are being hogged by pigs."

"Why would such a beautiful woman run?"

"Must be because there is an even prettier one waiting for him."

A group of bystanders stopped to watch, and those men who couldn't eat grapes and said the grapes were sour cursed Lin Chuan. Mu Bai was absolutely a beautiful woman, there was no doubt about that, and there were countless suitors chasing her at the television station. Most importantly, the program she hosted was starting to catch on, and she already had quite a few fans. Moreover, Mu Bai's beauty perfectly matched most men's aesthetic values.

Lin Chuan sped up and continued running. Finally, Mu Bai could no longer keep up. After running more than a hundred meters, she stopped gasping for breath, bending over with her hands propped on her knees, and cursed, "This jerk, I'm not a tigress, nor would I eat you, why the hell are you running?"

Watching Lin Chuan vanish in a whiff of smoke, Mu Bai could only give up in embarrassment and turned to walk towards the South Huai Mountain Road station.

After finally shaking off Mu Bai's pursuit, Lin Chuan stopped, and after triple-checking that the woman hadn't caught up, Lin Chuan finally relaxed completely. He laughed and said, "Kid, you still want to catch up with me? Is it that easy?"

......

City Committee.

As the end of the year approached, the work at the City Committee also became busy. To cooperate with the publicity work of Jiangbei City Television and Jiangbei Daily, Tang Yumeng almost had to face media interviews every day. Naturally, she occasionally had to do some showy tasks as well.
