Don't Mess with That Dragon

Chapter 199: Preparation for Retreat (1st Update)

Although Austin had already decided to try and develop a powerful spherical lightning to deal with those bizarre tumor-like creatures and the pyramid base beneath the giant swell,

but before completely destroying those things and keeping the zombie horde a hundred miles away, Austin would never put all the eggs in one basket.

Facing the approaching zombie army, Austin directly ordered the Dragon Nest Tribe Beastmen to prepare for a retreat.

Thanks to the preparations Austin made before his slumber, the elite Beastman Officer squad had already discovered a secluded but safe retreat route to the northeast and established a simple small outpost over a hundred kilometers in that direction from the Dragon Nest Tribe.

The current retreat preparation involves first evacuating the elders and children of the Dragon Nest Tribe to that outpost and beginning preliminary construction while also transferring large amounts of food and other supplies there to sustain the needs of the remaining Dragon Nest Tribe Beastmen.

Except for transferring the old and weak Beastman producers, most of the Beastman militia and a large portion of the Beastman Legion have begun to gather to see if Austin's spherical lightning plan could hold back the onslaught of the zombie horde.

After all, much of the wealth developed by the Dragon Nest Tribe is immovable fixed assets.

During these few days, the entire Dragon Nest Tribe has mobilized.

Under the command of Vini and other high-ranking members of the Beastman Tribe, the older and weaker beastmen within the tribe have begun preparations for evacuation. Column after column of bison herds continuously transport supplies to distant places.

As powerful as their mobilizing ability is as ever, this mobilization is, however, permeated with a lowly spirit within the tribe.

"Mom, are we going to move away from here?"

In the Dragon Nest Tribe, Nina stood at the door, watching the busily bustling beastmen in the tribe as they gathered and packed numerous supplies, constantly transporting them northeast with bison.

She stood blankly on the doorstep, the dusk sunlight reflecting in her pupils, the shadows of the beastmen coming and going shaded the light, dimming the glow in her eyes—there was reluctance, nostalgia, and reminiscence in that dim gaze.

The sound of packing behind her stopped unknowingly.

"Nina..."

A warm large hand gently stroked her head, and the voice fell silent.

Three years ago, seven kobolds with a kobold child traversed mountains and waters, desperately struggling in hunger and thirst, passed here, and encountered a young dragon.

Then, the story began from that point.

No one dared to imagine to what extent that rudimentary tribe could eventually grow, initially, everyone's hope was merely to survive and not be crushed like ants by the proud His Highness Blue Dragon.

No one thought, that with the changing of the world, things would reach this stage.

Nina's mother was one of the initial seven kobolds and personally witnessed how the Dragon Nest Tribe grew from a mere group of seven miserable, fleeing lowly kobolds to a position of regional hegemony.

At the very beginning, everyone in the frail tribe was filled with insecurity.

Would the children starve to death? Would that Blue Dragon occasionally take them as stored food supplies? What to do when the cold winter comes? Would they be attacked by a Magic Beast?

Too many doubts and fears were suppressing each kobold's heart, only feeling the future was bleak, like a lamp in a storm, ready to be extinguished at any time.

Fortunately, the worst had not happened, and things developed in unimaginable directions.

Under the protection of the great His Highness Austin, the newly established shabby, broken tribe rapidly grew and developed with His Highness's great wisdom—ice quarrying, fishing, opening up wasteland, annexing and sweeping, transforming and magicating, hunting Giant Beasts... until today, its population reached thirty thousand, dominating the surrounding area.

Recalling the journey of the past three years, Nina's mother couldn't help but feel like it was all a dream.

Who could have thought that the initially tiny, weary kobold team of seven would form a rugged, humble tribe that developed to this extent?

And in this development process, Nina's mother also participated in this grand construction and great expansion.

She watched the Dragon Nest Tribe grow from nothing, from small to big, from weak to strong... The construction of the entire tribe consumed too much of His Highness's effort and tugged at the emotions of each Beastman.

Now, having to leave the place where they struggled for three years, each Beastman felt a sense of difficulty and reluctance.

"It's okay, Nina, back then, His Highness led only seven of us to build such a huge tribe, and in the future, we will surely build an even stronger tribe!"

Despite the deep reluctance, they had no choice but to leave.

"And also, Nina, everyone believes that even if we leave now, His Highness will lead us back to reclaim it, so don't be too sad."

"Really, Mom?" Hearing this, Nina's eyes lit up.

"Really."

The kobold mother gently stroked Nina's little head.

.....

No matter how reluctant the Dragon Nest Beastmen within the tribe were to leave, the evacuation work within the Dragon Nest Tribe progressed orderly, with large quantities of supplies being moved out, and line after line of bison transport teams continuing unabated.

At the same time, the beastmen in the Dragon Nest Tribe began large-scale construction, burning large quantities of bricks and mixing the soil together, constructing a wall built with countless bricks starting to rise.

This wall, with the Dragon Nest Tribe's settlement as the core, encircles and protects the tribe's town settlement within it.

In this way, even if the Dragon Nest Beastmen ultimately had to retreat, with the protection of the wall, they could to some extent prevent the zombie horde from entering.

And those established town buildings and various construction tools that could not be moved in time could receive a certain degree of protection, and perhaps in the future, they could lead a team back, reintegrate the tribe settlement into their dominion.

The evacuation preparations within the tribe went smoothly, and concerning the movements of the southwest zombie horde, the Dragon Nest Tribe consistently dispatched people to monitor them, to prevent the Dragon Nest Tribe from being caught off guard by the zombie horde.

And as the Dragon Nest Tribe busied themselves, afar, over a large forested area, Austin was troubled.

Even though it was anticipated that a formidable magic technique like spherical lightning, comparable to a forbidden curse level, couldn't be developed in a short time, Austin only realized after actually attempting how difficult it was.
