Mage Legend

Chapter 576: Travel and Travel Beyond Chapter Sixty-Three Watching the Battle

The life in the Bronze Fortress is actually a daily repeated drama, where devils gather from every corner of the first layer of Bator Hell, rally here, and then plunge into the killing field of the Blood War. Lynch had just freed himself from the oath of Eryies when he was caught in a battle that broke out outside the fortress.

When the massive horn sounded, the deafening force was enough to topple an ordinary person. The prolonged sound echoed through every corner of the city, stirring the devils' thirst for battle.

The Mage, along with the Desire Demon, hid inside the nearest building. Although the walls of this house were full of cracks, it was enough to shield them from the recruitment officers' eyes. Lynch had only read about the Blood War in ancient texts and knew nothing about its actual circumstances.

"Eryies, will the Blood War affect here?" the Mage asked his most experienced advisor beside him, "Will outsiders like me get swept into it?"

"Oh, dear, the Blood War is certainly a brutal vortex, a literal battlefield of flesh and blood," the Desire Demon smiled and replied, "Whether you like it or not, as long as you're in this Bator Hell, you need to be careful where you stand. Personally, I'd rather walk on Heaven Mountain, as it's much safer there than in the Blood War."

"How many devils in the entire Bronze Fortress will participate in this battle?" Lynch asked. "Ten thousand? Twenty thousand?"

"Oh, master, I think you've underestimated the scale of the Blood War. This isn't some little skirmish on the Main Material Plane, spending one's brief life for a few inches of land." Eryies gently laughed, covering her mouth with her tail. "Ten thousand or twenty thousand is merely the number that falls in the first wave of long-range spells. As the greatest battlefield fortress in Bator Hell, the Bronze Fortress never sees less than three million in each battle."

"How many can survive?"

"At the gates of the Bronze Fortress, we devils have never been defeated, so the situation is a bit better here," Eryies said. "On other battlegrounds, even if it ends in a victory, only about one percent manage to return. After all, those demons are madmen and fools, who don't even understand simple tasks like retreating, forcing every clash to fight to the last one standing."

Lynch was astonished. The number three million could sweep through most countries of the Anriel World, yet here it's merely the number of participants in a battle, with the vast majority never having the chance to rise again. They all become nourishment for this crimson world.

"No wonder the sky here is red; even the vaporized blood is enough to cover this world," Lynch sighed. "But those who survive the Blood War are truly strong!"

"Yes, dear," the Desire Demon leaned close to the Mage, pouting with raised chin, "Strong master, why don't you try your hand in such battles? I think you could manage to survive."

"Why should I do that?" Lynch stepped back two paces from the Desire Demon. "I'm neither a devil nor a demon. I have no need to take such risks. My life is quite precious."

"You underestimate the Blood War. Those who return from the battlefield receive generous rewards, with the amount correlating to the risk you take." Eryies stepped forward softly, "For us, it's about attaining a higher form, and for you outsiders, it's unimaginable material rewards. You must know that in this Blood War, which has lasted countless years, many treasures are left behind, their owners long turned to dust in Bator Hell, yearning for new wielders."

Lynch looked into the Desire Demon's eyes, which did not sparkle with temptation, yet Lynch still felt his own will swaying. The Mage was unsure of Eryies' intent in encouraging him to join the Blood War, but he was certain it wasn't to use a demon's hand to end him. Once the Mage entered the battlefield, he would definitely bring the Desire Demon along, even using Eryies as a shield and cover when necessary to protect his own life. Even without those scenarios arising, a mere one percent survival chance was hardly worth the risk.

As Lynch pondered, the battle outside had already begun. Screaming projectiles flew over their room, engulfed in green fire. The catapult's ammunition dragged dark trails of smoke across the sky, flying towards the distance. Lynch cast his gaze outside the city, but layer upon layer of bronze walls blocked his view. The Desire Demon crept up quietly, whispering in the Mage's ear, "Dear, I know a place with a good view."
