Miami is a world-renowned tourist city. As long as you stick to the designated tourist spots, safety can be assured.
Jimmy and Nia's professions dictate that before traveling, they need to understand what's safe and what's not about their destination. Therefore, the places they've visited these past few days have mainly been around Miami Beach and downtown, avoiding venturing too deep into the city.
After all, it's a vacation, and happiness and safety are most important. The fewer troubles they encounter, the more time they have to enjoy themselves.
However, after going around, Nia didn't seem very enthusiastic, which is understandable; after traveling from New York to Miami, the urban areas are not vastly different, except the beach here is significantly better than New York's.
Jimmy thought for a while, flipped through the travel guide, and picked a few not-so-far destinations. He was then in charge of setting the itinerary.
On the third morning, Jimmy and Nia packed their bags and checked out. They drove away from Miami Beach in their rental car, headed back to the city, and then took Florida State Highway 1 towards Key West.
The highway leads to the ocean, stretching just under 200 kilometers, traversing many of the Florida Islands, eventually reaching Key West. The seaside views along the way are stunning. Although the drive is long, it's anything but monotonous.
Key West is the southernmost point of the United States and also a famous tourist city, naturally full of various resorts and hotels. After checking into a hotel by the sea, Jimmy and Nia went out for a stroll and enjoyed a delicious lunch. The key lime pie was indeed quite tangy and sweet.
In the afternoon, Jimmy had arranged a special activity for Nia: coral reef diving. Unfortunately, since neither Jimmy nor Nia had any diving experience, they spent quite a bit of time taking diving lessons and could only dive in shallow water with an instructor. Diving in deep water requires a certificate, something they'd experience another time.
Even though it was just shallow water diving, it was still a great experience. Observing the shallow coral and fish from an underwater perspective was a new adventure for both of them.
After their diving experience, Jimmy and Nia wandered along the beach. Unlike Miami Beach, this place was much less crowded and had a better environment.
At sunset, they went to Mallory Square, each buying a coconut, and joined many tourists waiting for the moment when the sun met the horizon. Nearby, there were many street performers, like magicians and fortune-tellers, which was also very entertaining.
Early the next day, they boarded a yacht they had rented in advance to set sail. The yacht was well-equipped, and the captain steered them close to their target island. Jimmy started fishing while Nia changed into a swimsuit and swam in the sea.
Nia swam around the yacht for a while before suddenly stopping, treading water on the surface. "Jimmy, there's something here."
Jimmy turned to look. "What?"
Nia replied, "There's something underwater."
Jimmy looked towards where Nia was pointing and observed the seabed with his Heart Eye. A few meters deep, there seemed to be an irregularly shaped, almost square object. He put away his fishing rod, took off his shirt and shoes, grabbed a pair of diving goggles, and jumped into the water. "Hold on, I'm coming."
Jimmy, who was fairly good at swimming, swam over to Nia and said quietly, "I'll go check it out. Keep an eye on the boat."
Taking a deep breath, Jimmy dove into the water. He finally got a good look and found that it seemed to be two packages connected together. The packages weren't large, but they didn't float, suggesting they were solid inside.
Instead of pulling it up directly, Jimmy surfaced and told Nia, "I saw it. It's a package. I'll try to bring it up."
Free diving can be very dangerous. Jimmy had never done it before, but the package wasn't very deep, probably less than ten meters. He struggled a bit, grabbed the top package, and floated to the surface with one hand.
The package was quite heavy. Bringing something to the surface from underwater is different from moving it on land. Jimmy wasn't concerned with how heavy it was; getting back to the surface was the priority. It was only when he was almost out of breath that he managed to break the surface.
As Jimmy surfaced, Nia swam over immediately and grabbed him. Together, they swam to the yacht, shouting, "Captain, come help us."
The captain at the front of the yacht heard their calls and came to the stern, pulling Nia onboard first, then bringing Jimmy up.
Staring at the package in Jimmy's hand, the captain was surprised. "What is this about?"
Jimmy explained, "Nia noticed it while swimming. I went down and brought it up. Do you recognize it?"
The captain instructed, "Don't open it or touch it. I'll contact the police station."
"Why?" Jimmy asked.
The captain replied, "I'll tell you in a bit."
While speaking, the captain hurried to the cockpit, grabbed the radio, and contacted the yacht club, reporting the discovery of the package and their current coordinates, instructing them to notify the police.
After completing all this, the captain returned to Jimmy and Nia. "I've seen this type of packaging in an internal notice. Just a few days ago, the police reported busting a drug smuggling case with packaging just like this, in a dirty yellow, block shape."
Jimmy was speechless. He turned to look at Nia, who also appeared helpless. They were just here to have fun - how could they be so unlucky?
The captain shrugged. "Finding something like this needs to be reported. Sorry, you two, I don't want to get into trouble."
