Jimmy hung up the phone and said to the security guard in the surveillance room, "Do you have a map of the area? I need something detailed."
Guard: "For the nearby area, we only have a map of Newburgh."
Jimmy glanced at the map of Newburgh provided by the guard, but it was useless; he had already reached the north of Newburgh, and this map was merely of the downtown area.
Jimmy: "How large is the forest in front of your factory?"
The guard's eyes widened, "You're going in there to look for someone? Give up, the forest is at least one kilometer long and more than 500 meters wide. It's very difficult to find a person in such a forest, especially since you are alone."
Jimmy: "Have you been in there?"
The guard nodded, "Last year we often went hunting there, mainly for small animals like rabbits."
Jimmy: "Are there any large animals inside?"
The guard shook his head, "No, the forest is safe, but the trees are very dense and visibility is poor."
Jimmy nodded, "Thanks."
After a while, the head of security returned and handed Jimmy a piece of A4 paper, which was a printout of the surveillance footage. Although the quality of the image was not very good, it was still recognizable.
Jimmy thanked him, took the A4 paper, and left the factory, returning to his car parked by the roadside. He continued to drive along the road, which was flanked by dense forest on one side and showed no other residences or factories on the other. To check the surveillance, he would have to keep moving forward.
It had been half a day since Riley had left the front gate of the factory, and even if he was on foot, he could cover about 4 kilometers in an hour, let alone the possibility that he might have hitchhiked part of the way. However, he might avoid contact with others to prevent being discovered, Jimmy hoped that was the case. If Riley was just walking, Jimmy still had a chance to catch up; otherwise, he would have to rely on various alarm clues.
Unfortunately, after driving about ten kilometers along the road and asking the residents and factory workers he encountered, Jimmy found no trace of the person seen in the surveillance footage.
It was now 2 p.m., and considering the time, if he kept moving, the fugitive Riley would have already covered a distance of more than 20 kilometers. But that possibility was low. Starting from yesterday, he had been on the run for only two days, which were critical in being tracked. During this period, he likely had no interest in staying in one place for long and would just rest briefly, trying to move away from the area to avoid being discovered by the FBI and police.
From the clues found so far, fugitive Riley had definitely split the loot with fugitive Cameron Brown after killing the car owner they had abducted, and then they had separated to escape. Judging by the timeline, he must have rested once in that hunting cabin before fleeing in the night.
Seeing that he passed by the factory around 6 a.m., he had basically not fled during the day yesterday, but had hidden all day and only started moving late at night to avoid being seen. From this point of view, since it was now daytime, theoretically, he should be hiding somewhere.
Realizing this, Jimmy immediately pulled over. With about three hours left until dark, if his speculation were correct, Riley would still be hiding somewhere, waiting for nightfall or even midnight. Hence, he wouldn't have moved very far. Jimmy had already driven more than ten kilometers, which is much more than someone could cover on foot in one or two hours.
Considering people leaving for work around 7 or 8 a.m., he would have only had a little over an hour to walk, covering at most 6-7 kilometers, and considering his possible lack of food and water, it might be even less.
Jimmy immediately turned the car around. The forests in this area were patchy, and although there wasn't the kind of forest that stretched for several kilometers, each patch was a few hundred meters to one or two kilometers long. If fugitive Riley was hiding in such a forest, it would be very difficult to find him.
But Jimmy had his own plan: to search the forest during the day and then stake out at night directly in front. There would be very few people walking alone in such an environment at night. Then, he would just need to watch the road.
Since he was rushing under the cover of night, he definitely needed to move fast, which meant he could not stay entirely in the forest but would have to come out onto the road. Of course, it was not necessarily the road where Jimmy was; this was New York State, where transportation was convenient, and there were many roads. This was just a possibility.
Jimmy drove back two or three kilometers, parked his car on the roadside, and locked it before entering the adjacent forest to search. He didn't dare go too deep in, as leaving an unoccupied car at the roadside was too unsafe, so after a short while, he came back out.
Returning to his car, Jimmy lit a cigarette. Being alone was really inconvenient. After resting for a while, Jimmy drove forward again and re-entered the forest to continue his search.
After a series of searches, Jimmy noticed a residential house not far from the roadside. Lucky find.
Jimmy drove to the house. From what he could tell within the range of his view, "Heart Eye", there was no one in the house. It seemed he was lucky, but not that lucky.
Jimmy parked his car in front of the house, making it look less conspicuous. Generally, even a car thief would not blatantly steal a car in front of a residence, but that was just generally speaking.
Jimmy locked his car and started crossing the road to enter the forest. It was now past 4 p.m., and in half an hour, it would be dark. Jimmy didn't have much time left.
