North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 663: 425 Fork in the Road

Jimmy stood at the edge of the sidewalk, smoking, the patrol car was parked here, yellow tape sectioning off the area, surrounded by a few bored onlookers gawking at the scene. When Mahong arrived, this was what he saw.

While showing his badge to the police, Mahong called out to Jimmy, "Jimmy, what happened?"

With a cold expression, Jimmy gestured with his hand and walked over: "Just now, a motorcyclist shot at me twice from behind. After I dodged, the shooter fired two more rounds and fled."

Examining Jimmy up and down with furrowed brows, Mahong noticed that aside from some dust on his clothes that left stains when wiped, there was no blood. He seemed to be unharmed, "What did they look like?"

Jimmy: "I'm not familiar with motorcycles, so I couldn't identify the model. Both riders were wearing leather jackets, helmets, and gloves. I couldn't see their faces, no distinctive features. I've already contacted Chuck from the NYPD to help check the surveillance footage from the dispatch center to see if we can track their movements."

Jimmy looked in the direction they had escaped, "Right, I took a shot but missed. It probably hit the motorcycle frame; there was no blood or oil leak, so it didn't hit the fuel tank."

Mahong nodded, "Got any theories? Who are they?"

Jimmy shook his head: "No leads for now. I shouldn't have provoked anyone. I've been over it and whether it was gang-related or a case I worked on, I don't think I left anything unresolved, except for that one ringleader who escaped from the last explosion case."

Mahong: "Let's go back and review the information, see if we missed anything. If nothing else turns up, we'll start with the bombing case."

Jimmy nodded: "You go ahead, I'll wait for the forensic team to finish up here, to avoid any oversights."

Mahong nodded and left. When something like this happens, forget about resting at the apartment. It needed to be resolved quickly. An agent had been shot at, and it was a deliberate act; this was no small matter.

If it was as Jimmy suggested and the ringleader from the previous series of bombings had returned, this wouldn't merely be a shooting incident; the bombings could recur.

Mahong was internally anxious but kept a steady hand and didn't forget to call Philicia to come back while he drove to the office. He also phoned Hughes. This couldn't go unreported, especially if it was the beginning of another bombing case; the leadership definitely had to be informed.

However, since it was still speculative, Mahong didn't share his current theory, only that Jimmy had been shot at, and this difference in detail caused both Hughes and Ruiz to be completely off track.

-----------------

Hughes clenched his teeth, his face twitching slightly. He said to Ruiz, "We need to change the plan. Continue investigating the mole, dig him out by any means. Someone who knows Jimmy's home and parking spots, and can set an ambush at the parking lot entrance, definitely has detailed intelligence. Dig him out for me."

Ruiz nodded; this couldn't be taken lightly. An investigation targeting an agent's personal information and attacking right at their doorstep was no longer a provocation but a declaration of war against all field agents like them.

Ruiz: "Should Jimmy be recused from this case?"

Hughes shook his head: "Do you think, with his temperament, he would recuse himself voluntarily? I'll arrange for it tomorrow. For now, let's reassign him for a while."

Ruiz stood up: "Then I'll head back. Tomorrow I'll start the investigation, and I might need to warn some people not to interfere. Is that okay?"

Hughes: "Do it, if necessary."

Ruiz nodded and left Hughes's study.

As Hughes watched Ruiz leave, he took out his phone and called Thomas, but no one answered. Hughes hung up and placed the phone on the desk, waiting for the call back.

-----------------

After the forensic team arrived to take photos and collect the casings, Jimmy first stopped by his house, tossing the groceries into the fridge. For safety, he carefully checked inside the house when he arrived to make sure no one had planted a bomb behind the door or anything like that.

What he had told Mahong was true; he really suspected this much. In his recent dealings with Azte, although they had all been wiped out and the three or four survivors were under FBI supervision without any arrangement for jail, they weren't in a position to send out messages.

Moving back even further, aside from that incident with Razor, there probably weren't any other gangs after him. Though he did take out several of Azte's assassins back then, they had been quiet in New York for a long time, which was an obvious sign of fear; they didn't dare cause trouble.

Considering all this, the only one who might specifically target him like this would likely be the escaped mastermind of the bombing case, Nu'er Mohammod.

He had another corroborating fact; just recently, FBI Agent Riley Butler from the Newark office had come to inquire about bomb-maker El. They had experienced a bombing similar to El's explosives. All these details could be connected.

Jimmy speculated that Nu'er, throughout half a year on the run, had somehow returned to the United States and connected with another bomb-maker to continue his campaign. Holding a grudge for the previous mission's failure, he had initiated an investigation against the FBI agents responsible for his case and arranged for an attack on Jimmy as revenge.

The logic made sense, even though some details remained unclear at the moment, but the main thread was probably about right.
