North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 743: 457 Departure Albuquerque_2

Jimmy booted up his computer and did a search. The plan to blend in with the locals went bust immediately—New Mexico's total population wasn't even 2 million, and Asians, including South Asian Indians, made up a pitiful 1%. With his Chinese features, no matter how much he tried to disguise himself, he'd stick out as a rare commodity. How was he supposed to stay hidden?

After some thought, Jimmy decided to switch plans. He booked a taxi at the front desk and headed to a used car dealership where he purchased a vehicle using his real identity.

After the dealership prepared the car, Jimmy drove off, planning to return to the hotel. Of course, he took a few detours along the way to familiarize himself with the traffic conditions and the terrain. He passed by a coffee shop, parked, and went in for a cup of coffee, also a chance to get to know the place.

A young and handsome Chinese man appearing here was quite noticeable. The cafe wasn't crowded, and a Latin American waitress even took the initiative to greet him and chat for a bit. When she found out he was traveling from New York, she enthusiastically recommended some nearby spots to visit.

Ever since Nia came into his life, Jimmy had scarcely flirted with women; he was polite but not overly friendly, merely engaging in some small talk. It was better than doing nothing, and chatting with the waitress seemed like a much better use of time than baking in the sun outside.

After finishing his coffee, Jimmy got back into his car, turned on the radio, and listened to music while driving back to the hotel. Tomorrow, he'd start working.

The next day, Jimmy suited up in a standard FBI outfit—with a suit and sunglasses, the FBI badge clipped to his belt, carrying a photo of Scott from the printed materials—as he stepped out of his room and approached the front desk.

The young woman at the front desk was quite surprised to see Jimmy. "Wow, are you going for a job interview?" she asked.

Jokingly, Jimmy responded, "No, just have some business to handle. Cathy, have you seen this man before?"

Cathy frowned slightly, "Are you looking for someone?"

Jimmy nodded, "Yeah, he's also from New York."

Cathy studied the photo carefully and then shook her head. "I don't recognize him; he's not a guest here."

Jimmy: "Thanks, I'll be heading out now. Goodbye, Cathy."

Cathy: "Goodbye."

Jimmy didn't drive off but walked towards the right instead. He was ready to conduct a regular inquiry in the vicinity, a deliberate choice to stir the waters and see what might surface.

Chinese FBI agents were rare, and since being Chinese was already conspicuous, he might as well approach the investigation in a straightforward manner. After all, Scott, the subject of his inquiry, had a legitimate identity and was not openly involved in the underworld.

In the office building next door, Jimmy showed his credentials at the reception downstairs and presented Scott's photo. The receptionist shook her head. It was indeed a tough case, and she even called over a security guard to help confirm.

There were a few small companies in this building, but most people warranted at least a faint recognition. The photo Jimmy provided was indeed unfamiliar to them. After thanking them, Jimmy left the office building and crossed the street to another one.

Jimmy followed the same procedure at the reception, showing his credentials and the photo. The receptionist seemed to become tense suddenly, still claiming to have never seen the person in the photo, intending to brush Jimmy off.

Observing her expression, Jimmy sensed something was off. Although he didn't know whether she was nervous because he was FBI or because of the photo, there was definitely something amiss here.

Jimmy took back the photo. "How many companies are upstairs? I'd like to have a word with them."

Receptionist: "Sorry, without their permission, I can't let you enter the office area. Security!"

A security guard who had been watching Jimmy and the receptionist approached upon hearing her call. "Sir, please don't disrupt our work."

Jimmy nodded, "OK, thank you." He turned and left the lobby, stepping outside.

He walked to the side of the entrance, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and lit one, keeping a watchful Heart Eye on the situation inside. The receptionist, seeing Jimmy leave the hall, picked up the phone; unfortunately, he couldn't hear what she was saying.

Jimmy looked up at the floors above, where there didn't seem to be many people. He kept an eye on their movements, and shortly after the receptionist put down the phone, three people headed towards the elevator upstairs.

Watching them reach the ground floor lobby, they stood near the reception for a while before turning and going back into the elevator, this time going down to the underground parking.

Interesting, Jimmy saw them get into an SUV and drive off, leaving his Heart Eye range. They must have exited from another side.

Jimmy rushed to the hotel parking lot, which was not far, just under a hundred meters away. He jumped into his car, ignoring the high temperature inside, started the vehicle, and left the parking lot in pursuit.

Luckily, though there were many cars on the road, there weren't many SUVs. Jimmy sped up, passing several cars before spotting one with three people inside, just like the ones he had observed earlier. He followed them at a distance as their vehicle headed north.

It seemed like their destination was far off. After a while, they got on Highway 25. This area was new to Jimmy since he had primarily studied the map of the Lower District in the city center. Now, he couldn't very well drive and read the map at the same time; he could only keep following them until they reached their destination, then figure out exactly where they were.

The SUV exited the highway and entered a city street. Jimmy followed suit. When they reached a supermarket at an intersection, the vehicle turned and drove into the parking lot.

Jimmy followed from a distance, arriving at a parking spot. The people from the SUV got out, two of them dressed in suits and sunglasses, likely from the front and passenger seats, while a middle-aged white man wearing a T-shirt also stepped out of the car.
