Bang!
The heavy coffin was suddenly flung open, and Leoz stepped back two paces, avoiding the pouring torrent of soul energy. The almost crystalline energy surged like a tide, and anything brushed by it would be tainted by the will and spirit of the deceased, ultimately being assimilated step by step into a necromancer's flesh puppet.
Leoz had an abundance of experience in dealing with this powerful soul spirit, not only from memories of Xides but more from when he suppressed the Dominating Universe and slaughtered the Dragon Race civilization.
He turned and moved to avoid the turbulent soul current, using a small knife to cut open his left index finger and carve runes on the ground.
An eerie single eye slowly opened, accompanied by a bizarre, mocking laughter echoing in the surrounding space.
This was not a mere soul-binding talisman—it originated from the Mysterious Origin, Spikect's primal runes, ranked top in the entire Starry Abyss rune sequence, known as the 'Deep Mark' entity.
Similar runes could be possessed by any Starry Abyss Main God, except Leoz himself, as his rank, being an Executer, had not reached that level.
Like a stray lamb encountering a tiger, the soul's torrent quickly calmed down, and the will of the deceased soul spirit gradually restored its reason, wandering in the air and preparing to condense.
The power of the Deep Mark rune immediately manifested; Spikect's power was almost ineffective against the living but essentially unbeatable against soul spirits.
It's truly a pity that this rune lacked any killing power; otherwise, many things could be resolved quickly.
"Uh... It's been too long since anyone awakened me."
A low voice directly echoed in the mind.
Leoz shook the dust off his cloak, looked ahead, and the soul energy within the coffin had condensed into a semi-transparent form, resembling a heavily armored samurai, supporting a knee with one hand and leaning against the coffin, slowly sitting down, breathing to rest for a moment, gaining composure, then raising his head to meet Leoz's gaze:
"You? A little rascal, can actually come here?"
"My name is Leoz."
He spoke, raising the Rock Ghost Phalanx in his hand:
"I think this thing can explain a lot."
"Terafall's Phalanx?—Ah, a straightforward lad, doesn't waste a word."
The samurai seemed exhausted, every action requiring all his strength; he slowly lifted his hand and beckoned to Leoz:
"Come here, closer, I don't have the strength, the Nether Abyss curse will permanently take something from you—what I lost is my energy."
Without doubt, Leoz advanced to a position two to three meters in front of the other, standing still, and asked:
"Are you the Mysterious Rock Lord, Anweng Breton?"
"In life, that was my name."
Anweng lifted his ethereal large hand, gently passing over the top of Leoz's head, immediately uttering a soft "Huh":
"How can it be like this... Able to come here, yet the channels of your body are so blocked, no, it's not that there's no channel, your body's absorption of external energy is nearly nonexistent."
"My aunt once said I'm not very gifted from birth." Leoz said blandly.
"Not very gifted?" Anweng repeated, teasingly, "It's more than just not very gifted – little ghost, your survival is simply a miracle."
"Hmm?" Leoz frowned, "What do you mean by that?"
Anweng pointed his finger at him:
"You, lad, have a twin brother or sister, don't you?"
Leoz was surprised:
"How did you figure that out?"
"It's very common, in our era... Hmm, I just asked the Will of the Border Abyss, it's been 829 years since the last time I was awakened, which is about 1300 years before now. Your situation isn't uncommon; we call it 'Life Sacrifice'."
"Life Sacrifice?"
The other's words piqued Leoz's interest; these conversations weren't recorded in his past life.
"Yes, Life Sacrifice, you should know that for us Ascenders, the closer we reach the higher levels, the more we approach the posture of the Starry Abyss Divine Race. In fact, the Starry Abyss Divine Race doesn't have reproductive abilities, even the legendary Lai Anding Matriarch Goddess who is said to nurture the Divine Race is merely nominally the Mother of a Thousand Gods, actually using various materials and adding the fiery chaos to create deities by hand; truly leaving offspring is indeed a difficult task."
Anweng took a breath, leaned against the coffin, rested for a while, and continued slowly:
"Though not everyone can successfully Ascend to Godhood, the cursed misfortunes endured in the process aren't few; no one wants to leave their race devoid of offspring, to extend their bloodline and spirit. Coupled with our harsh environment in the Border Abyss, even Void demons coming over would be doomed to fail, including me, inheritance of offspring is a necessity."
"Ordinary people in the Layer Abyss are fortunate, but the high-ranking forces, like me as a Demigod, even finding a partner to merge with, one can't withstand their own mighty genes or there exists reproductive isolation; even after successful conception, what is likely born is what is referred to as 'Divine Aberration' or 'Calamity God,' misshaped monsters."
"So, people thought of an idea, using Magic means, to make the mother only bear twins."
"What's the use of that?" Leoz was puzzled, "Giving birth to one or two, the probability of deformity and Divine Aberration is equally the same, isn't it? Curses are also inherited according to bloodline..."
"You overestimate nature's curse, and underestimate mortal wisdom."
Anweng tapped his head and laughed:
"You should understand, people of the same Pathway, when Submergence Starry Abyss together, the curses on them are dispersed, do you know why?"
"Isn't this the Starry Abyss's own interception mechanism, to encourage more people to choose a Pathway, to avoid internal strife—"
"No, you're wrong, no matter how they limit the early-stage crushing internal consumption, upon reaching Mass Abyss, and competing for Godhood, even Omega Tier (24) disbands as easily as snowflakes."
Anweng shook his head and said:
"Let me tell you, actually, it's the Starry Abyss implanting identity markers for you."
Leoz's pupils contracted:
"...How is that possible?"
"There's nothing impossible, quite surprising, isn't it? Unexpectedly, the real purpose of curses is to categorize and manage people as if recycling rubbish."
Anweng spread his hands and said:
"You've gone far ahead, little ghost; your elders will certainly not tell you this—Starry Abyss's curse is actually selecting talents needed by each layer for itself; the ultimate aim is to provide the deepest layer, the Primordial Abyss, with the greatest Samurais and Chief Gods—who will undertake the task of Dominating the entire Starry Abyss."
"So you're saying that curses and blessings are actually to help the Primordial Abyss select inheritors?"
"Precisely so, different curses will continually accumulate and add up, the aim is to select Ascenders completely obsessed with Primordial Abyss, wholly loyal to the Starry Abyss; only such individuals are qualified to co-rule the Starry Abyss alongside the Primordial God Clan—and others serve merely as the stepping stone for those ascending to the throne."
Anweng said:
"Although the truth is a bit cruel, at least we can deduce a method based on this mechanism, helping us to leave offspring in this competition—that is: Life Sacrifice."
