Sylia, the Dark & Light Saint

Interlude L.02 – Pyon Pyon and the Two Measures of Time [Updated August 15th]

On that day, Pyon Pyon, a Chipmyon-Byomos brought into existence through the Magic of Sylia's own Familiar, Myon Myon the Chipmyon, was preparing to leave behind the comfort of his native Dimension and take his place at Sylia's side as one of her servants.

The moment was filled with both anticipation and a touch of apprehension, for this would be his first time stepping into a world that was unlike anything he had known before. It was not long before the vast differences between his homeland and Sylia's world began to unfold before him.

Under the patient yet firm guidance of the Dwarvian Mage Scribe appointed to educate him on the customs, laws, and workings of his new home, Pyon Pyon soon realized that this was not a land where idle games and carefree wandering would fill his days. Here, responsibilities outweighed leisure, and the pace of life was driven by structures and expectations unfamiliar to his homeland. What had once been a life of playful freedom would now be replaced by the demands of duty, and though the thought weighed on him, he resolved to adapt, aware that his future as Sylia's servant depended on it.

And so the lecture began…

Time in Nagasmar is measured by two calendars, both used throughout the Kingdom but for different purposes. These systems operate in parallel, and while they coexist in the same society, they serve separate functions and reflect different priorities.

The first is the Religious Calendar, which governs daily life for the majority of the population. It is the calendar of the general populace and the Clergy, used for ordinary matters such as seasonal preparation, celebrations, and rites. The Religious Year typically spans fifteen to sixteen months as counted by civil months, though it does not follow a fixed pattern of days. It is considered by most to be the more "natural" or "sacred" system, rooted in Divine cycles and spiritual observances. Among lower Commoners, it is often the only calendar known or used.

The second is the Civil Calendar, a more structured and stable time system used by scholars, administrators, and state institutions. It is also used by members of the Noble class, though mostly in legal and bureaucratic matters. This calendar divides the year into twelve months, each composed of approximately thirty days. Its purpose is to maintain consistency across record-keeping, property rights, political schedules, and military logistics.

Both calendars are active and recognized, and although they often overlap, they are not synchronized. Any educated person expected to navigate institutional affairs must be fluent in both.

Pyon Pyon learning he is too old to play…

Although the Civil Calendar is required for legal and bureaucratic matters, it is the Religious Year that governs how age is counted throughout the Kingdom. Children's ages are tracked according to the sacred cycles, not by the rigid months of the state. As a result, the age of majority, emancipation, and social rites are all measured according to the Religious Calendar. Even civil documents are known to record both Civil and Religious birthdates.

A person is regarded as an adult at the age of fourteen in Religious Years, but full emancipation does not occur until they reach fifteen. Until that time, they cannot marry without the consent of a parent or guardian, and they are prohibited from purchasing leaseholds. They are still permitted to rent property, provided they can present adequate collateral.

This system is more than ceremonial. It functions as a legal and cultural mechanism to delay full autonomy, even for those with influence, ability, or resources. In effect, it preserves existing power structures, limiting access to independence among younger citizens regardless of their potential.

Myon Myon is also unhappy
