Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 155 New Case

The shooting case was quite complicated, involving multiple victims and gunmen, having a significant social impact, and taking a long time to close.

Throughout the latter half of the month, the first squadron was mostly busy with wrapping up the paperwork and case files.

Using the downtime to his advantage, Luke started leaving work on time every day and used up the three new study cards he drew.

These were the Profile Card, Observation Card, and Micro-expression Analysis Card.

He considerably advanced his skills in these three areas, which made Luke feel very fulfilled.

Soon, June arrived, and the weather became somewhat warmer than in the previous two months.

With the change in weather, clothing became more lightweight, and Luke started wearing short sleeves.

In the morning, Luke rode his Harley into the detective bureau, attracting quite an audience.

The customized Harley looked even cooler, with more perfect aerodynamics, broader tires, and more striking colors.

Its stylish and dominant appearance suited Luke's personality well.

"Hey, nice custom job on the Harley," Captain Jones said as he walked over and patted the motorbike's rear seat.

Luke smiled and replied, "You have a good eye too."

"Got a minute? Let's talk," Jones suggested.

"I thought you were just fond of my bike."

Jones chuckled. "Not mutually exclusive."

The two headed to the smoking area, where Jones offered Luke a cigarette.

"Captain Jones, what did you want to talk about?" Luke truly couldn't guess why Jones wanted to see him.

Jones took a drag of his cigarette. "Can we talk about David?"

"What about David?"

"I know David has a tough style of investigation. He's managed to offend a few people and has been investigated by the internal affairs department a few times. I don't think he is very suited to stay in the Robbery and Murder Department. He might fit better in our Anti-Black-Market and Narcotics Department. I have a decent position to offer him.

But before extending a formal invitation, I wanted to know more about him. You're his partner; you must know him best."

Luke frowned slightly. "If David were to go to the Anti-Black-Market and Narcotics Department, what position would he hold?"

"Deputy Chief.

The previous deputy chief was transferred, and we don't have a suitable replacement. I have a recommendation slot, of course, whether the transfer goes through still depends on his abilities."

"Sounds good." David was already in his thirties and had been with the Robbery and Murder Department for seven or eight years. He indeed was qualified for a promotion to deputy chief.

There is usually one or two deputies in a squadron, and since the Robbery and Murder Department's first squadron already had Vincent as a deputy, Luke's promotion was only a matter of time. For David to be promoted to deputy in the first squadron, he would have to wait even longer.

Either Luke had to leave, or the current deputy had to retire; a transfer to the Anti-Black-Market and Narcotics Department was indeed an opportunity. Of course, the key was what David thought about it.

As for Luke, it didn't matter much to him.

The Anti-Black-Market and Narcotics Department was located just below the Robbery and Murder Department, so they could often run into each other going in and out of work and could even go for drinks together at a bar in the evening.

Additionally, with a good relationship between them, being in different departments could be beneficial as they could exchange information, helping each other's career progress.

Luke objectively shared David's situation.

There was no need to exaggerate at this time. Even if David successfully transferred, he'd be going there as deputy chief. If his words didn't match his actions, his direct supervisor Jones wouldn't be too pleased either.

After about fifteen minutes of conversation, Jones had about gathered all he needed to know. "Luke, don't tell David just yet. Wait until I have definite news, then I'll talk to him."

"OK."

Jones patted Luke on the shoulder again. "I'll take off now, and I'll owe you a drink next time we get a chance."

Luke laughed.

I don't believe you for a second. If you wanted to buy me a drink, why not chat over a few at the bar tonight, instead of dragging me out for a talk this early in the morning.

However, this was indeed good news; Luke would let David know when the time was right.

As for what Jones said, Luke couldn't care less.

He knew well enough the ins and outs of their relationship.

Returning to the office.

David gestured towards the window, "Your motorbike is really flashy."

Luke laughed. "It's a staple of the tough guy, you're just jealous."

David tilted his chin up, pointing towards Little Black's desk, "Our squad has already lost one tough guy; you might be next."

Little Black was slumping, chin in hand, looking completely dispirited.

Luke shook his head; he couldn't concern himself with that, one tough guy in the office was enough.

Matthew entered the office and called out, "Luke, someone's looking for you outside?"

"Who?"

"Some white, chubby guy, looks pretty cute."

"What the heck?"

A white, chubby guy, and pretty cute? Luke was puzzled about who it could be looking for him.

Luke headed downstairs and saw a familiar figure, Uncle Val.

"Uncle, what brings you here?"

"I happened to be passing by and thought I'd check up on you. Nice working environment you got here, wow... Is that your custom Harley? Super cool," Val yawned and patted Luke's motorbike.

Luke stepped back, frowning, "Have you been drinking?"

"Just one beer."

Luke didn't believe it; the smell of alcohol was nearly overpowering.

"Uncle, did you need something?"

Val scratched his cheek, "Uh, I recently bought quite a bit of stock, and they're all stuck high... you know."

Luke cut to the chase, "How much money?"

"Two hundred dollars."

Luke sighed and took out two hundred dollars from his wallet and handed it to him.

"I'll pay you back, double," Val promised.

Luke wasn't holding out much hope. "Why didn't you just call me?"

"My phone got cut off."

Luke "..."

Val pocketed the two hundred dollars, "I won't always be like this, trust me."

What could Luke say, "Find a job first."
