Little Black answered, "Yes, it's Markway, that talk show victim's agent."
"Why did that bastard poison him?"
David wasn't an outsider, so Little Black didn't conceal anything, "The talk show victim wanted to break the contract with him, this guy felt abandoned and wanted to take revenge."
"At first, I thought it was really a random poisoning case."
"So did we."
Luke said, "Oh, there's another thing I need to tell you, during the investigation we found a talk show comedian named Kenneth who, for fame, falsely claimed he was the murderer.
We applied for a search warrant for his house and found a large quantity of drugs, ready to hand it over to your narcotics division.
In addition, we will also charge him with obstruction of public duty."
David commented indifferently, "I'm not surprised at all that a talk show comedian does drugs.
Those guys taking drugs to stay pumped is nothing new."
Luke said, "Don't offer him a plea deal."
David laughed, "Did he offend you?"
Little Black drew a circle with his right index finger, "Everyone."
"I'll take good care of him," David said with a knowing look, then turned to Little Black and counter-questioned, "Hey, I heard you're getting married. Is that true?"
"True, I'll invite you."
"Oh my god!" David exaggerated his expression, "Are you crazy?"
"I'm perfectly normal."
"Then it's the world that's crazy." David still found it hard to believe, took a sip of alcohol to calm down, "Who's the bride?"
"You know her."
"Are you recycling old flames? Julian?"
"Yes, it's her."
"You sure you're not messing with me?" David asked Little Black, but his glance swept towards others.
Luke said, "It's true, Julian and Marcus reconciled, just yesterday, they even invited me to their home for dinner. The roasted lamb chops were great."
David pinched Little Black's cheek, "Why? Is something wrong with you?"
"Hey, I'm perfectly normal." Little Black dodged back, glanced around, and explained quietly, "Julian is pregnant, I need to take responsibility."
"God! I really find it unbelievable." David exclaimed emotionally.
The deputy captain raised his glass, "David, you're not alone."
Jenny also raised her glass, "That's what I wanted to say."
Little Black said discontentedly, "Hey, hey, hey, that's enough from you guys, different ages do different things, don't always judge me with old perspectives."
The deputy captain raised his glass again, "Bless you, I truly hope you don't follow in my footsteps."
Little Black had a stony expression, but he knew the deputy captain was just being mean-mouthed; he just rolled his eyes and let it slide.
Serves you right for being a deputy captain forever, I'm nothing like you.
"Ding-a-ling…"
Just then, Luke's phone rang.
Luke glanced at it; it was Linda calling, "Hey, mom."
"Where are you? Still investigating?" Linda's voice sounded a bit anxious over the phone.
"No, I'm at a bar with colleagues, what's up?"
"Jack hasn't come home yet, I went to his usual comic book store and fried chicken joint but didn't see him.
I called his classmates' homes and they don't know either.
I can't find him."
"What about Maggie? Does she know?"
"I had added Maggie on the messaging app before, I sent her messages, but she hasn't replied, and I don't know her exact address."
"Don't worry, I know where Maggie lives, I'll go and ask her, maybe she knows where Jack is."
Linda said with concern, "He hasn't gotten into some trouble, has he?"
"Don't worry, he's probably just hanging out with some friends and forgot to tell you.
I'll find him." Luke reassured her a couple of times, then hung up the phone.
"Guys, my brother hasn't come home, my mom's freaking out, I need to go find him."
Little Black asked, "Do you want me to come with you?"
"Not necessary for now."
David gestured with a hand signal, "Call if you need anything."
"I will." Luke said goodbye to his colleagues and left the bar.
...
Twenty minutes later.
Carly Community.
A Mercedes G500 drove into Carly Community.
This community was not far from Ino Community, where Maggie lived.
Luke had never been to Maggie's house, but he knew where Maggie lived due to a peculiar reason.
Back then, Little Fatty and Maggie were secretly dating without their families knowing, and Luke, who happened to be returning to the community, saw the two strolling and showing affection.
Out of being a responsible older brother, but more likely out of curiosity, Luke followed them and witnessed Little Fatty with a silly smile watching Maggie go home.
Luke parked the car near Maggie's house and as soon as he got out, he noticed a sneaky figure near Maggie's place.
With that height and build, Luke recognized it was Little Fatty right away.
Luke snapped his fingers and waved, "You idiot, get in the car."
Chubby had been dragging his feet a bit at first, but when he saw Luke getting into the car, he followed and sat in the passenger seat.
Luke glanced at him. He didn't seem injured; his eyes were red, as if he had been crying. "What's wrong with you? Why aren't you going home?"
Chubby lowered his head. "I don't want to talk about it."
Seeing that he wasn't hurt, Luke felt relieved. He could roughly guess what had happened; probably a lovers' quarrel that upset him.
Luke started the car, preparing to take him home.
"Dude, where are you headed?"
"Taking you home."
"I don't want to go home."
"Why not?"
"I don't want to go home, don't want to face my mom's questions. I'm heartbroken enough already."
"You've had a breakup?"
"Is it that obvious?"
"Why did Maggie break up with you?"
"I don't know, I just wanted to ask her for clarity."
"Then why don't you go ask her, instead of sneaking around outside?"
"Her dad is at home..."
"So, you plan to just wait outside until Maggie comes out alone?"
"I don't know." Chubby shook his head, his voice pleading, "Can I stay at your place tonight?"
"Why?"
"I think it might make me feel a bit better, maybe you could give me some advice."
"What kind of advice?"
"Advice on dealing with a breakup."
"You'd be disappointed, but I can't help you. Because usually, it's me doing the dumping, I don't know what it feels like to be dumped."
Chubby reached to open the car door.
"Hey, where are you going?"
"To see Maggie."
"You have the courage to knock on her door?"
"No, but I can wait outside."
Luke "…"
Luke locked the car door, saying helplessly, "Don't you think that's embarrassing?"
Chubby clutched his chest. "Right now, I can only feel heartache."
"Then just knock on her door directly."
"What if her dad answers?"
"Just tell the truth, that you want to talk to Maggie. He should understand."
"No, I've never formally met him before."
"Hasn't Maggie invited you to her house?"
"I've been there, but only when her dad wasn't around."
"Are you sure you're not just a backup?"
"You can't talk about Maggie like that, she's not that kind of girl."
"Okay, I'm giving you three options now. First, go knock on the door and see Maggie.
Second, I'll drive you back to your mom's house.
Third, come to my place and sleep on the couch. It's a very hard couch."
Staring out the window at Maggie's house, Chubby said, "I choose the very hard couch."
Luke shook his head and took out his phone to call Linda, "Speak for yourself."
Chubby was reluctant to take the phone. "She'll scold me."
"I'll hit you."
Chubby reluctantly took the phone. "It's Jack."
"God, where have you been? Why aren't you coming home without telling me?"
"I forgot."
"What kind of damn excuse is that? Hurry home now, right away, and explain yourself."
Chubby moved the phone away a bit. "Bro invited me over to his place, I'm not coming home tonight."
"Not today, you must come back."
"I don't want to."
After saying this, Chubby handed the phone back to Luke.
Luke simply said, "He and Maggie broke up."
"Hah..." Linda scoffed, "You really are brothers, send that little punk back home."
Chubby yelled, "I don't want to go home, don't want to be interrogated, I'm annoyed enough as it is."
"Fine, then don't ever come back." Linda hung up the phone.
Luke sighed, "Mom cares about you, why are you provoking her?"
"I don't want to be like this, I just can't control my temper." Chubby sighed, showing a look of regret.
Luke said sternly, "Taking your anger out on loved ones is a sign of weakness, it proves nothing but your immaturity."
